Workshop   «Discover America»

 Level:  8–th grade students

No. of Students: 6-15

Activity Focus:  learning about the biggest American cities, speaking, research skills

Objectives:  mastering speaking skills through getting additional information about the country;

              developing critical thinking by means of communicative tasks;

              creating projects.

Class Time:  for 40-minute classes

Materials for usage:  worksheets, presentations, maps

The Structure of the workshop

1. Start up!

Teacher: Today we’ll make a virtual trip to the USA. We’ll learn about the country, its cities. So up we go!

2. Warming up!

Teacher: What do you know about the USA? Take these worksheets and complete them with your ideas, expressing what associations you have got.

3. Speaking

Students’ presentations

4. Watching a film

Teacher: Would you like to learn some more? Watch a film and add your association – cards with some new things.

5. Speaking

          Teacher:  And now share your ideas with your classmates. Say everything you have learnt about the          country.           Now each group can give its sticker to the project they like more.

6. “Gallery Walk”

Teacher: How about visiting two main American cities, New York and Washington? But first you should ask your classmates to answer the questions and find out what city it is.

7. Checking up

Teacher: Watch a presentation and check your classmates’ answers.

8. Project work

Teacher: Do you like the idea of being a guide? Make up a tour around Washington. Choose which sights of Washington you advise tourists to see. Use the maps and mark the landmarks on it.

9. Speaking presentation

Teacher: Watch a presentation to learn what places New York is famous for.

10.  Reflection

Teacher:  Give your attitude to the lesson. Say what you like more
