Northern Ireland is variously described as a country , province or region which is part of the United Kingdom . Located in the northeast of the island of Ireland , Northern Ireland shares a border to the south and west with the Republic of Ireland . In 2011 , its population was 1,810,863,constituting about 30% of the island's total population and about 3% of the UK's population .

The logo for the Northern Ireland assembly is based on the flower of the flax plant. The three-leaved clover or the shamrock is one of Ireland’s most recognizable symbols. According to the legend, St. Patrick, the patron of Ireland, illustrated the concept of the Holy Trinity with the help of shamrock during the process of Christianization of the state. Since that time people always wear the plant on Saint Patrick’s Day that is the Irish national holiday.
