Byology Beowulf is an Old English epic poem consisting of 3182 alliterative lines . It is the oldest surviving long poem in Old English and is commonly cited as one of the most important works of Old English literature . It was written in England some time between the 8th and the early 11th century. The author was an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet, referred to by scholars as the "Beowulf poet". The full poem survives in the manuscript known as the Nowell Codex, located in the British Library. It has no title in the original manuscript, but has become known by the name of the story's protagonist. In 1731, the manuscript was badly damaged by a fire that swept through Ashburnham House in London that had a collection of medieval manuscripts assembled by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton.
Main characters Wealhtheow Hrothgar's queen welcomes Beowulf and is the embodiment of charm and hospitality. Unferth One of the best servants of Hrothgar, in Unferth insults Beowulf after dipping too deeply into a bowl of honey on the first banquet. Later, he gives Beowulf sword for a decisive battle Geats (Weder-Folk or Weders) Beowulf A mighty warrior and noble individual, the poem's hero, with the strength of 30 in his hand-grip, comes to the aid of Hrothgar's Danes. Later Beowulf is king of the Geats. Wiglaf he is the Geats' future king and a symbol of loyalty within the social / political structure of the comitatus. Hygelac King of the Geats and uncle to Beowulf, his death in battle (c. 520) is recorded historically, unlike most of the events in the poem. Hygd Queen Hygelac is the perfect hostess. Beowulf faithful to her and her son . Heardred Despite Beowulf's support, the young king, son of Hygelac and Hygd, is killed in a hostility . Beowulf then becomes king of the Geats.

Summury In the poem, Beowulf, a warrior from Geats comes to the rescue of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes whose land is being attacked by a monster, Grendel. Beowulf succeeds and defeats Grendel. To show his prowess, he even kills Grendel with his bare hands. However, the tension of the story escalates, because Grendel's mother is now on the warpath to get revenge. As the story progresses, Beowulf kills Grendel's mother with a sword that giants of a past time once used. After this victory, Beowulf returns home to Geats. Fifty years pass, however, there is one final battle. There is a dragon that plagues his people because of stolen treasure. More importantly, Beowulf now has to defend his people. He fails at first, but then with the help of Wiglaf, a servant, chases the dragon into its lair and kills it. However, in the process, Beowulf receives a fatal wound and dies. Finally, he is buried by the sea.
