Sir Christopher Wren
Sir Christopher Wren was a designer, astronomer, geometer, and one of the greatest English architects of his time.
Christopher Wren was born into a rich family in 1632. He was a weak and sickly child and was taught at home by private tutors and his father. Wren’s schooling is a mystery: there are no documents about whether he attended school or not. However, there is a written evidence that he entered Oxford University in 1650 to study science and mathematics.
On graduating from university, Wren was appointed Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College, London. He was required to give weekly lectures in both Latin and English to all who wished to attend; admission was free. The lectures aroused great interest of the general and professional audience. Wren's lectures and the following discussions led to establishing the Royal Society, England’s first scientific organization.
Later, Christopher Wren taught at Oxford University. His scientific work included astronomy, optics, mechanics, medicine and meteorology. He invented and improved lots of things. He experimented with submarine design, road paving, and design of telescopes. It was also around these times that his attention turned to architecture.
Wren designed 51 London churches, including St Paul's Cathedral, and several buildings after the Great Fire in 1666. He insisted on the finest materials and only skillful workers were hired for the job.
Actually, St. Paul’s Cathedral is still Wren's masterpiece. The architectural style of St. Paul's Cathedral is a beautiful mix of the Medieval, Classical, and Baroque. The inside of St. Paul's Cathedral is gorgeous. Nowadays, St. Paul’s Cathedral is the largest working Protestant church in England.
Wren died on 25th February 1723. His gravestone in St Paul's Cathedral features a Latin inscription which translates as: 'If you seek his memorial, look about you.'

Interesting lives: Puk and Harry
Hi! I’m Puk from Thailand. In Thailand we go to school for ten months of the year.
We have a holiday in April because it’s the rainy season. In October we have another holiday because there are a lot of festivals. October is my favourite month!
The food here is very spicy and we always eat rice with our meals. My favourite meal is green curry with jasmine rice.
Our houses are very simple. They are two or three metres above the land - on tall sticks - so they are protected from the monsoons.
I do Muay Thai - Thai boxing. It’s our national sport and it’s a great way to keep fit. Once a week we go to the park to fly kites. Kite-flying is a popular hobby here.
Most Thais are Buddhists. We have a quiet hour every day at school when we sit with our eyes closed and meditate. All of our houses have statues of Buddha.
Hello! I’m Harry from Amsterdam in the Netherlands. People in Amsterdam live in houses, flats or house boats.
Dutch people love football. I play for the school team. I also like listening to music and playing guitar.
Food here is usually simple but we’ve got a lot of foreign restaurants.
I always have a big breakfast with bread, jam, cheese and eggs. But my favourite food is pea soup!
School finishes at 2.30 and then we are free. We have holidays at Easter, Christmas, and for a month and a half during the summer.
My family isn’t religious but most people here are Protestants.
Amsterdam is a small city with a lot of canals and narrow streets. I love living here because the people are friendly and there are a lot of things to see and do.

The Volga River
The Volga River, flowing in the western part of Russia, is famous for its length, and width. It is one of the most important rivers in Russia. The people living on either side in its length believe that the river is more than just a trade and transport route. They call the river Volga Matushka (Matushka means Mother in Russian) because has played a great role in the history, culture, and lifestyle of the European Russians. The Volga River has its beginnings in the Valdai Hills located near Moscow in the northwest. First the river flows east passing by Yaroslavl and Nizhny Novgorod. Then it turns south near Kazan. Its journey ends in the Caspian Sea by creating a big delta near Astrakhan. Most of the length of the river is navigable as well. One of the oldest mentions of the river was by the Greek geographer and writer Ptolemy, who mentioned the Ra River (as the Volga River was known in Ancient Greece) in his book called the Geography. The importance of the Volga River dates back to the ancient times. During the 1st century AD, the river was used for trade and transport by the Slavics, the Bulgars and the Khazars who settled in different parts of the Volga basin. Russian states were formed and there was an increase in agriculture of wheat and other crops along the river basin. During World War II, Hitler considered the Volga River to have great significance for his war against the USSR. He had planned to block Volga routes to weaken the Russian army. But the Battle of Stalingrad (23 August 1942-2 February 1943) destroyed the German Sixth Army.

School in the Slums
Slums – трущобы
Mellish school is in the slums of Brooklyn for pupils between twelve and fifteen years of age. There are about 1500 pupils there, and 90 teachers.
It’s a problem school, perhaps one of the most difficult schools in America. The white teachers can’t walk to the school because they may be attacked. They all drive to school, and their cars have special locks. There’s always a black policeman at the door of the school. He has a radio contact with the school guards. Pupils must have a written permission from the teacher if they want to go to the toilet.
The children who live in that district go to that school. They are all black children. However, why do the teachers work there?
“It’s very hard of course,” says Jane Flinch, a 45-year-old teacher. Most children have problems at home. Some of them are beaten by their parents. Some of them sleep at the lessons because they had to work at night. Some of the children get sick at the lessons because they didn’t have breakfast or even a meal for a day or two. “There’s also the problem of violence,” says another teacher. There is very little money for teaching in that school. There is no money to buy food for the children.
It’s the love of the job that keeps the teachers in that school. They teach and do social work. They feel that they are doing something good for the children who need help.
The principal of the school has been there for many years. A lot of his happy optimism has gone. “No, I’m not optimistic about the future. Look around you,” he says and points out of the window at the high wall round the school. ”It’s not a very bright sight: buildings have holes instead of the windows, shops are closed, groups of people are sitting on the steps of the houses. They have nowhere to go and nothing to do.”
“We need money,” he says, “money is the only way to help this school and these people, and, of course, jobs for the people.”
