Benito Juárez: A Young Student in Mexico 1 Benito Juárez, a poor Indian boy, was twelve years old when he left ___1 village home in December 1818. Benito walked forty-one miles to the city of Oaxaca, high in the mountains of Mexico. He arrived speaking his native Zapotec language and just a few words of Spanish.
