The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. Its land is 244.000 sq. km. The population is over 60 mln people.
England: its land is 130,000 sq. km.; the population of England is 48 mln people; the capital of England is London; people who live in England are called the English, they speak only English; t he national emblem of England is the red rose and the national flag of England represents a red cross on a white field .
Scotland: its land is78,000 sq. km.; the population of Scotland is 5,3 mln people; the capital of Scotland is Edinburgh; people who live in Scotland are called Scottish or Scots, they speak Scots and English; t he national symbol of Scotland is a thistle and the national flag is a blue field with white diagonal stripes .
Wales: its land is 21,000 sq. km.; the population of Wales is about 3 mln people; the capital of Wales is Cardiff; people who live in Wales are called Welsh, they speak Welsh and English; the national symbol of Wales is a yellow daffodil and the national flag is white and green with a red dragon on it .
Northern Ireland: its land is14,000 sq. km.; the population of Northern Ireland is 1.5 mln people; the capital of Northern Ireland is Belfast; people who live in Northern Ireland are the Irish, they speak Irish and English; t he national symbol of Northern Ireland is a green shamrock and the flag of Ireland represents a diagonal red cross on a white field.
Westminster Abbey is a symbol of England. It is a royal church; it was built in the 11th century. The coronation of all British Kings and Queens takes place in Westminster Abbey. Some famous English people are buried t here: Newton, Darwin . Kipling and others . Westminster Abbey
Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the Royal residence. It was built in 170 5 by the Duke of Buckingham. It is now the official home of Queen Elizabeth and the British Royal Family. There are nearly six hundred rooms in the palace and three miles of red carpet. About 700 people work for the palace .
The Tower of London i s a very old building . I t is more than 900 years old. English kings lived in it many years ago, but now it is a museum. It was a fortress, a royal palace and later a prison. The ravens are another famous sign. The legend says that without them t he Tower of London will fall . The Tower of London
Tower Bridge Tower Bridge was opened in 1894. It takes its name from the Tower of London. The hydraulic mechanism can raise and lower the bridge in about one and a half minutes. The covered walkway between the two towers is opened to the public and offers a spectacular view of London.
Big Ben is the name of the huge clock in one of the tall towers of the Houses of Parliament. It doesn`t look very big, but its minute hand is as a double-decker bus. People are allowed to get inside the Tower so that they can see the works of Big Ben. There is no lift and there are three hundred and forty steps up to Big Ben. Big Ben
Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square is the geographical centre of London, it was named in the memory Admiral Nelson's victory in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The tall Nelson’s Column stands in the middle of the square.
