The platypus is a semi aquatic mammal living to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. It is the sole living representative of its family and genus.
The body and the broad, flat tail of the platypus are covered with dense, brown fur. The fur is waterproof. It has webbed feet and a large, rubbery beak; these features appear closer to those of a duck than to those of any known mammal.
Platypus – is one of the few venomous mammals. The ankle spur on the male's hind limb is used to deliver venom. While both male and female platypuses are born with ankle spurs, only the male's spurs produce a cocktail of venom.
The platypus is mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth. They have babies and feed them on milk. Babies are born naked and blind, a length of about 2.5 cm. The female feeds cuds and lives with them first 4 months, after babies start coming out of the hole on the hunt.
This unique animal is a symbol of Australia, it is depicted on the reverse of the Australian 20 cent coin.
