Famous writers

        There are a lot of famous British and American writers. Some of them wrote books for children. Others wrote serious books for grown-up people. They lived long ago. But now people know their names and read their books.

1. William Shakespeare wrote many books: tragedies, comedies and poems. He was born in 1564 and died in 1616. He was also an actor at the Globe Theatre in London and acted in his plays. His most famous plays are “Romeo and Juliet” and “Hamlet”
2. Rudyard Kipling was born in 1865. He wrote many poems and stories for children. Children like his “Just So Stories” and “Jungle Book”(about Mowgli) very much. He got the Nobel Prize for literature.
3. Jerome K. Jerome was born in England in 1859. He was a clerk, a teacher, a journalist, an actor before he became a writer. His books are full of humour.  His best book is “Three Men in a Boat”.
4. Mark Twain was an American writer. He was born in 1835. Many children like to read “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, the main character of which is funny boy. He has got a lot of friends and is full of ideas.
5. Lewis Carroll was born in 1832. He was a mathematician and worked at Oxford University, but he wrote books too. His best book was “ Alice in Wonderland”.

Wise mice

Many mice lived in the house. But they are not happy. There is a cat in the house too. Every day the cat eats many mice.

One day the oldest mouse says, “Come to my hole, mice. Let’s think what we can do with the cat”.

The mice come to the hole and begin to speak, “The cat is bad. But we don’t know what to do!” Then the youngest mouse says, “I know! We don’t hear when the cat comes to our hole. Let’s put a bell on the cat’s neck. The bell will ring. We shall run away.”

The mice are very glad. They say, “What a good plan you have, friend! Let’s get a bell.” And the oldest mouse says, “We can get a bell. But who will put it on the cat’s neck?” The youngest mouse answers, “I can do it”. All the mice say, “We will do it together!”

The oldest mouse thinks and says, “The plan is not good if we can’t do that. I have another plan. The cat will have a birthday. Let’s give him this bell as a present.” “Oh, what a nice plan!” all mice say.

Next day it is cat’s birthday and the cat finds a beautiful box in the kitchen. He opens the box and sees a nice bell and letter. The letter says, “Happy birthday to you, Cat!”

The cat is very happy! He puts this nice bell on his neck. And all the mice are glad, too. The bell rings and the mice know when the cat comes to the hole.
