Countries and languages
Girl - We are glad to greet the …
Boy – Our participants will represent 3 English-speaking countries. Your captains will have to solve a puzzle about a certain country during 2 minutes. Then they will read their texts to all of you and you will have to guess what country is described here.
- New Zealand
The Maori people arrived there by canoe from islands in Polynesia near Tahiti around 1,000 A.D .This country was founded in 1642 by a Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. The country was first called after a region in the Netherlands. In 1769, Captain James Cook came to the islands. He was British and they settled there. In 1840 they signed a treaty with the Maori people. This made this country a colony of the British Empire, so their ruler is actually the Queen of England! It is a really remote country, and a flight there from the UK would take you about 24 hours. This far away country has two main islands, the North and South Islands and these are separated by the Cook Strait. There are over 50 volcanoes, some of which can still erupt. As it’s really remote, this country has some really cool and unusual wildlife that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
- Canada
This country was discovered by Europeans in 1610. Since the 16th century, both French and English kings have ruled over the country. It gained independence from Britain in 1867. Today, Queen Elizabeth II (of England) is still also the Queen of this country and the head of state. It shares borders with the United States of America. Canada is the second biggest country in the world, after Russia - measured by total area! Its longest river is the McKenzie River in the North West. This country has the largest waterfalls. These are the Niagara Falls. The country has two official languages: English and French. The first people there are called 'Inuit.' Roller skates and snowmobiles were invented in this country. A flight there from Russia would take you about 15 hours. The black bear is probably the first animal that comes to your mind when you think about this country’s wildlife.
- Ireland
This country is often called Emerald Isle. Gaelic is the country's first official language, however the second official language English is more commonly spoken. Famous writers of this country include Jonathan Swift - Gulliver's Travels and Bram Stoker – Dracula. Saint Patrick's Day is the official national holiday of this country. Gaelic football and hurling are traditional sports and remain the most popular sports in the country. Shamrock (type of clover) is the national symbol and along with the harp it is a registered trademark of the country. Most Irish people believe that fairies exist. In their culture, fairies have magical powers and bring happiness and great things to families. In its folklore, they are tiny men called Leprechauns who can fit on top of your shoulder. They are completely harmless, and are believed to have buried numerous pots of gold. There are no snakes in this country; the only reptile is the lizard.
Girl – While our captains are busy, you are welcome to watch a video about English-speaking countries.
