Ход урока:
Announcer: Good morning, dear friends! Today we are meeting in order to have a spacebridge “England - America”. The guests from America are here in our studio and the representatives from England will appear on our screen very soon. I offer you to think what you want to ask and what you want to tell about your countries. Everything has been prepared. Well, let’s start.
English friends, hello, we are glad to see you!
The English: Good Morning, there. We are glad to meet you too. We have a lot of questions about your country and a lot of stories about ours.
The American: We count our country is one of the largest and the richest and the most beautiful one.
The English: We have a long and very interesting history and many beautiful historic places for visiting.
Announcer: So, our spacebridge is going to be thrilling. Your first question, please.
The American: Who started to build London and why?
The English: The Romans went to England many years ago and they built the town on the river Thames. They named it Londinium. The Romans built a lot of roads from Londinium to other parts of Britain. In Roman times Londinium was a small town with 50 000 population by the year 400.
The American: Oh, I couldn’t imagine your capital is such an old town. We have heard that there are a lot of bridges across the river Thames. What was the first of them?
Englishman: Until 1749, there was only one bridge over Thames: London Bridge. There were houses and shops on the bridge. In the nineteenth century there were already many new bridges in London. Now there are more than twenty bridges over the Thames.
The American: Many conquerors wanted to conquer England, didn’t they?
The English: In 1066 William the Conqueror and his people went to England from Normandy in France. He became a King of England. But William was afraid of the English, so he built the White Tower to live in it. Now it is one of the most important and beautiful buildings of the Tower of London.
The American: If I visit London, I’ll see the famous Tower of London. How many people lived in London by 1600 and when did the Great Fire of London start?
The English: By 1600 there were more than two hundred thousand people in London. Their houses were made of wood and on Saturday, 2nd September 1666there was a strong wind from the river and a big fire began. It started in the house of the king’s baker, near London Bridge. The fire burnt until Thursday and destroyed 80% of the city. After the Great Fire people built a new city.
The American: Now London is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. What is the heart of London?
The English: The heart of London is the City. It is the oldest part of the capital. Many people work in the City but very few live there. There are many banks and different offices there too. One of the most interesting places is the Tower of London. The Tower was a fortress, a palace, a prison, the Mint and the King’s Zoo. Now it is the museum.
The American: Is the story about black ravens living in the tower true?
The English: William the Conqueror built the Tower in the eleventh century. There are always black ravens in the Tower of London. People keep them in the Tower and look after them very well as they believe that London will be rich while ravens live there.
The American: It’s a funny story. Are there any other interesting places to see in London?
The English: One of the greatest English Churches, St. Paul’s Cathedral, is not far from The Tower. The famous English architect Sir Christopher Wren built it in the 17th century after the Great Fire. It took Sir Christopher Wren 35 years. It is a beautiful building with many columns and towers. In one of its towers there is the largest bell in the world.
The American: It seems to me that a square is always in the center of the city. Can you describe any London square?
The English: With great pleasure. The center of London is Trafalgar Square. Some people say it is the most beautiful place in London. In the middle of the square stands a tall column. It is a monument to Admiral Nelson. Four bronze lions look at the square from the monument. There are two beautiful fountains in the square. They are in front of the National Gallery, which is one of the best picture galleries in the world.
The American: As I see the City is not the political center of London.
The English: You are right. The political center of London is Westminster. If you go down Whitehall from Trafalgar Square, on the right you will see a small street where the British Prime Minister lives. He lives at number 10 Downing Street.
Whitehall is a wide street leading to Parliament Square. On the left you can see a long grey building with towers, which are the Houses of Parliament. The large clock in one of the towers is Big Ben. It is the name of the clock and the bell of the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. The clock and the bell got their names after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben.
The American: Are the Houses of Parliament far from the river Thames?
The English: The Thames is behind the Houses of Parliament and the bridge across it is Westminster Bridge. On the other side of Parliament Square is Westminster Abbey. It is one of the most famous and beautiful churches in London. It is nine hundred years old.
The American: Why is it famous?
The English: There are many monuments and statues there. There is the Poet’s Corner there too. And many great outstanding people are buried there: Charles Dickens, Rudyard Kipling, Isaac Newton and others.
The American: Where does the Queen of England live?
The English: The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace. It is a wonderful building with a monument in front of it, which is the Queen Victoria Memorial. And now it is a high time to talk about the USA. Your county is young enough.
The American: Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1942. He was born in Italy but lived in Spain. So the King and the Queen of Spain sent him to India but he discovered the new land, it was America.
The English: Do you know when England became interested in America?
The American: The first English settlements appeared in America at the beginning of the seventeenth century. On the 6th of September in 1620 a group of people left England for the New World. They sailed from Plymouth on board the ship “Mayflower”. They wanted to start a new life and to have no problems with the church. 74 men and 28 women set up a colony New England in America.
The English: Can you describe the first traditions of the first colonists?
The American: The last Thursday in November is Thanksgiving Day. It is a very important day in the American year. People go to church and families come together for the day. They decorate their houses with the fruits and flowers of autumn and prepare traditional American food: roast turkey, potatoes and pumpkin. In 1620 they came to America and began a new life there. It was a very hard life. The colonists started to farm the land. In the autumn of 1621 the colonists had their first harvest. The colonists decided to have a special dinner.
They wanted to thank God – to give him their thanks for many things. The colonists had a thanksgiving dinner for all the people. It lasted three days. Since that time the turkey has become a symbol of Thanksgiving Day.
The English: I wonder when the United States was founded?
The American: In 1773 there were 13 colonies in America. George Washington became the first president of the United States.
The English: What clothes did the colonists wear?
The American: They wore “cowboy” clothes: hats, boots and Jeans. In the middle of the 19th century a tailor Levi Strauss made jeans in San Francisco. Now people wear jeans in America and all over the world.
Announcer: The time of the spacebridge is over. Thanks to everybody. I hoped we all have received very interesting and useful information and we shall have another meeting later.
