Easy Pilgrim Hats

This easy craft was a cinch to pull together and the kids had a great time acting out the parts of the Pilgrims and Native Americans while we read about the First Thanksgiving in Gail Gibbons' Thanksgiving Day .  I particularly like this story because it's bright pictures and simple text make this informative text easy to understand for the preschool set.

For our hats, we used:

Poster Board strips

Black, yellow, and white Construction Paper

Glue

Scissors

Stapler

1.  I free-handed the basic shape of the hat out of black construction paper and then cut a long rectangle out of white construction paper.  For the buckle of the hat, I cut a larger yellow square and a smaller white square.  Older kids could cut the squares and rectangles themselves.

2.  Let the kids glue their pieces together to make the hat and then glue their hat to a 2-3'' strip of poster board.

3.  Wrap the poster board strip around the child's head to measure and then staple together to form a band.

For the Native American headdresses 

(inspired by Big Brother's Kindergarten project), 

we used:

Brown, Red, Yellow, and Orange Construction Paper

String

Beads

Glue

Scissors

Hole punch

Stapler

1.  Make a 2-3'' strip of brown construction paper long enough to circle your child's head.

2.  Cut out (or let them cut out) feathers from the red, yellow, and orange construction paper.

3.  Wrap the brown strip of paper around your child's head and staple to form the headdress.

4.  Glue the feathers to the back of the headdress.

5.  Hole punch one hold on each side of the headdress and tie string through the holes.

6.  Tie two beads to the end of the string.

I'm sure these will get added to the dress-up box for a few weeks as the kids have fun retelling and acting out the story of the First Thanksgiving.
