Mr. Scotti's misunderstanding

1) Even when Mr. Scotti was told in Italian that he was in the wrong city and country, he wouldn't believe his mistake. As a police car rushed him back to the airport, he pointed at the speeding cars and said, "I know I'm in Italy. That's how they drive."

2) He was a little surprised by the changes there had been in Italy but, after all, this was 2010 and it was natural to assume that many old buildings had been destroyed since he had left. He was also surprised by how many people spoke English, but, after all, American tourists were everywhere. There were even street signs in English!

3) The plane made a refuelling stop at New York's Kennedy airport on its way to Italy. Mr. Scotti, who didn't speak English too well, misunderstood the words "refuelling stop". Thinking he had arrived at his destination, he got off the plane and went into the airport.

4) When he spoke to a second policeman, he wasn't so lucky. How ridiculous, thought Mr. Scotti, that the government employed policemen who couldn't speak Italian.

5) This story began on the airplane. There was a very happy passenger, Mr. Nicholas Scotti. He was going back to his native country of Italy after years of living in San Francisco.

6) But Mr. Scotti didn't have time for speculation. He had to meet his relatives. So he asked a police officer in Italian for directions to the bus terminal. The policeman, who by coincidence was from Naples, answered influent Italian.

7) His nephews weren't there to meet him, but Mr. Scotti assumed they had been caught in the notorious Roman traffic they had told him about in their letters. So he found his own way out of the airport.

Dan: A new survey out today has revealed that we're spending more time than ever waiting in airport departure lounges. So we sent our reporter Nicole Watson to Heathrow to find out how people are passing the time there.

Nicole: Thanks, Dan. Excuse me, madam, where are you flying to today?

Woman 1: Oh, I'm going to Madrid.

Nicole: And can I ask how you normally spend your time while you're waiting for your flight?

Woman 1: I usually buy a paperback and just go and sit somewhere quiet.

Nicole: So do you just read until your flight is called?

Woman 1: Yes, that's right. Once I got so involved in the book I was reading that I missed my plane.

Nicole: Really?

Woman 1: Yes, it was quite embarrassing, actually.

Nicole: And what about you, sir? How long have you been here today?

Man 1: I've been sitting here for nearly five hours.

Nicole: Wow, that's a long time!

Man 1: Yes, there's a problem with the plane or something.

Nicole: Oh and how have you been spending your time?

Man 1: Well, I really love people-watching and airports are just brilliant for that. So that's all I've been doing, really. Oh, I've also called my parents to say good-bye.

Nicole: Right. And the gentleman sitting next to you. How do you feel about waiting at airports?

Man 2: Absolutely hate it, to be honest. Luckily, I only live ten minutes away, so I usually check in as late as I can.

Nicole: And how are you spending your time here today?

Man 2: I'm doing a part-time business management course at the moment, so I'm trying to catch up on my coursework.

Nicole: And why are you travelling today?

Man 2: I'm flying to Hamburg for some meetings. I'm supposed to be seeing some clients as soon as I arrive, but I see the flights have been delayed. Just my luck?

Nicole: And how about you, madam?

Woman 2: Well, I've been looking round all the shops. I have three kids and I never get time to shop for myself, so I'm having a great time today. Have you bought anything?

Woman 2: Yes, a handbag and some perfume. I'm also thinking of buying a camera, but I think they might be cheaper online.

Nicole: And where are your kids now?

Woman 2: They're with my husband in that restaurant over there having lunch. My youngest is usually very good, but he's very difficult today. So we've decided to take it in turns to look after them.

Nicole: Thanks very much. So that's how people are passing the time at Heathrow today, Dan. Back to you in the studio.
