The Hares and the Frogs

Once upon a time the hares were quite unhappy because they lived in constant fear of everybody. They were afraid of men, dogs, wolves, eagles, to say nothing of lions and tigers. They saw everywhere and could not enjoy their life at all.

One fine morning they gathered in the forest to discuss their condition. An old hare, who was very tired of this life, said: “Here we live in constant fear of some danger. We cannot eat properly, we cannot sleep quietly. Every best of the forest frightens us. It is better to die than to live in such a way. Our life is worse than death itself”.

As the other hares were very unhappy too, they agreed that the only way out was to die. And they decided to drown themselves. There was a deep lake in the forest, and they rushed towards it. When they reached the lake, some frogs that were resting on the bank were so frightened by the hares that they jumped into the water.

The hares stopped and one of them cried: “Friends, we are not the most unhappy animals in the forest. Look at those frogs. They are afraid even of us. Our life is not so bad, if there are other animals in the forest with more danger around them. Let us be patient and try to enjoy our life’.

And the hares returned to the forest happily and have lived there ever since. They taught their children to hide under the bushes and in the grass, and they trained them to run fast when where was any danger. But they never again thought about drowning themselves.

Mikhail Lomonosov

        Mikhail Lomonosov is the father of Russian science and an outstanding poet.

        Mikhail Lomonosov was born in 1711 in the province of Arkhangelsk. He liked to spend his time fishing with his father. He began to read when he was a little boy. He wanted to study and when he was 19 he travelled on foot to Moscow. He decided to enter Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy. He entered it and six years later in 1736 he was sent abroad to complete his studies in chemistry and mining. Lomonosov worked hard and became a great scientist. Lomonosov was a physicist, a painter, an astronomer, a geographer, a historian and a statesman.

        Mikhail Lomonosov made a telescope. He observed a lot of stars and planets through his telescope. Lomonosov wrote the first scientific grammar of the Russian language. He wrote many poems.

        Lomonosov built a factory near Petersburg. It was the factory, where glass was produced. He made a portrait of Peter the First with pieces of glass. Lomonosov was the founder of the first Russian University. This University is named after Lomonosov and it is situated in Moscow.

        Mikhail Lomonosov died in 1765. People still know him and remember him.
