The UK is bordered with Ireland. It has sea borders with France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Scandinavian countries.
To the south La- Mansh Channel, or the English Channel lies the border with France. Britain also borders with other countries in continental Europe - the south-east over the North Sea from Belgium to Norway.
The UK consists of four administrative and political units (historical provinces): England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
England (39 counties, six metropolitan counties and Greater London) - adm. Centre is London Wales (22 unitary education: 9 counties, three cities and 10 towns) - adm. Centre is Cardiff Scotland (12 areas: 9 districts and 3 major territories) - adm. Centre is Edinburgh Northern Ireland (26 counties) - adm. Centre is Belfast
The modern capital of the UK is London.
The largest cities are: London (8,173,900 people), Manchester (498 800 people). Only Birmingham came very close to the mark of one million people.
If we look at the map, we can see the lowlands and the highlands. The lowlands are in the southern part of the country.
The highlands are in the northern part of the country.
