- Let us introduce the information about Finland to you.

-So, Finland is our Northern neighbor. The Russian Federation borders it in the north-west.

You can see the Finnish flag. Do you know what it means? The blue cross means all water resources of  Finland that this country is rich in. And the white background means snow as it is a northern country.

-As for the coat of arms, it depicts a golden lion on the red background. A lion is the symbol of power. And there are 9 silver flowers according to the number of  historical regions in Finland.

-Finland is the country in the North of Europe.  It is a member of  EU.

The official languages are Finnish and Swedish.

It is washed by the Baltic Sea and the Finnish Gulf.

Most of the country is situated beyond the Arctic Circle.

The largest cities are Turku, Tampere, Oulu, Rovaniemi and Helsinki- the capital of Finland. It is a modern busy city with more than half a million population.

-As for water resources, Finland is called a country of thousands of lakes. There are also many rivers which connect these lakes. One of the most picturesque regions is A District of Lakes. It”s famous for beautiful sceneries

-The largest lake is Saima

-The longest river is Kemijoki.

-The supply of natural resources in Finland is not rich. There are deposits of zinc, marble, peat.

-Nearly 2\3 of the territory is covered with forests. It is valuable row material for industry.

 To the North there is more tundra and forestry tundra.

As for animal world, there are many bears, foxes, elks, squirrels, wolves, hares and lynxes.

Of course, everyone knows about reindeer. There are many reindeer farms, especially in Lapland.

-There is a Zoo near Rovanieni, called Ranua Zoo. Here you can see all the animals living in Finland. It is the only Zoo in the world situated beyond the Arctic Circle.

The most well-known inhabitant of the zoo is a polar bear cub. It was named RanZo after the

 name of the zoo.

-Now some facts about the history of Finland.

The first settlements on the territory of modern Finland appeared nearly a thousand of years ago. The native tribes were mostly hunters and fishermen.

The real data about Finland go back to the 12th century. There were many Christ campaigns from Sweden at that time. Finland got its independence after the Great October Revolution in Russia on the of 6th December  1917.

-Finland is a sportive country. As it is a northern country, the most popular sports are hockey, skiing, mountain skiing, snowboarding and figure skating.

-Education in Finland is compulsory from 7 to 17. Education is free. Everything is given to students at school, including stationery.

They study 190 days a year, five days a week. Saturdays and Sundays are their days- off.

There is not any school uniform.

The exams or tests are not compulsory. If there are any, students are allowed to use the Internet and reference books. The main task is to be able to use all the sources of information.

The education is available for foreign students, that’s why many students from Russia study there.

-Cultural life of Finland includes historical traditions and customs of different nationalities who live in Finland: Saams, Finish Tatars and Swedish.

Finland had been dependant on Sweden and Russia for many years before it got its independence. That’s why it appreciates its real Finnish national values. But there is a great influence of American culture nowadays because of the development of IT and tourism.

-Now some names connected with Finnish Culture.

Michael Agricola (1510-1557), a church leader, a scientist and a philologist – a creator of Finnish literature language.

Ellias Lennrot (1802-1884), a philologist, a collector and researcher of Finnish epos “Kalevala”.

Alexis Kivi (1834-1872), a writer, one of the founders of  fiction in the Finnish language.

Jan Sibelius (1865-1957), a composer, a founder of Finnish national music.

Luysi Nifontova, a famous ballet dancer in 1920-s.

-Now some words about Finnish crafts.  

The most popular are carvings made of wood, steel knives, different things made of wool and fur. Everything is made of natural materials.

The most famous Finnish trends are Martiini, Marimekko, Taigacorru.

-Now listen about holidays and festivals in Finland.

There are very many folk festivals in Finland, where people dance or sing.

A little later you’ll listen to Finnish polka song.

-Of course the most popular holiday in Finland is Christmas. They have long Christmas holidays, when most of people get together with the families and go to ski resorts to have fun.

-Rovaniemi is supposed to be the motherland of Santa Clause. We hope, that some of you have already visited his fairy village full of lights and miracles.

-As for Easter, in Finland it is more a source of energy and joy than a religious holiday. They  give chocolate rabbits to each other on that day.

-On the 1st of May the Finnish celebrate Vapunvyaivya, a holiday of spring. It is similar to Russian Varvara’s Day. On this day they celebrate spring and greet warm and sunny weather. There is a carnival with numerous concerts of students choirs.

-Mothers’ Day. They celebrate Mothers’ Day on the second Sunday in May. In Finland it is more important than the 8th of March. Mothers’ Day is a family holiday. On this day they give roses to their mothers. And there is a rose tram in the streets of Helsinki. 

-Yuhanus Day is one of the most favourite holidays for the Finnish. It is a pagan holiday.  It is celebrated funnily and widely in June. They usually go to the District of lakes to their summer houses, make fires and barbecue.
