FAMOUS PEOPLE FROM ROSTOV REGION

Information about famous people in the world who were born or lived in Rostov region.

Slide2. Anton Pavlovich Chekhov, a famous Russian writer, was born inTaganrog in 1860.He brought glory not only to our country, but also to our region.We are proud that his life is closely connected with our region.A.P.Chekhov left Taganrog gymnasium and entered Moscow University. He wanted to be a doctor. In 1887 he graduated from the university andbecame a qualified doctor.  He had the gift of improvising funny stories which kept his friends in fits of laughter. From 1880 to 1885 he wrote 388stories. The intelligent people in Petersburg found in Chekhov a talented writer and invited him to contribute to their journal. Chekhov wasimpressed. But he had never intended to become a professional writer.His work is immortal. His plays such as “Uncle Vanya” “Seagull”“Cherry Orchard” “Three Sisters” are played on the stages of the theatresof many countries. Many places in Taganrog are connected with the nameof the outstanding Russian writer: the Chekhov memorial museum, the Chekhov literary museum, the Taganrog Drama Theatre after A.P.Chekhov, a monument to Chekhov.

Slide3. Solzhenitsyn Alexander Isaevich is a famous Russian writer, Nobel Prize laureate. He was born in Kislovodsk in 1918. In 1924 his family moved to Rostov-on-Don. He finished Rostov secondary school №15 and graduated from phisical and mathimatical faculty of Rostov State University. He worked at school in town Morozovsk. He took part in the Great Patriotic War. In 1945 for “anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda” he was arrested and imprisoned for 8 years. In 1956 he was rehabilitated.His first story “One Day of Ivan Denisovich” brought him world glory. He wrote remarkable novels “In the First Circle”, “Arkhipelag GULAG” and many stories. In 1970 he got Nobel Prize in Literature. During 20 years he lived in exile. In 1994 he came back to Russia.

Kalinin Anatoly Veniaminovichwas born in stanitsaKamenskaya( now it is town Kamensk-Shakhtinsky) in 1916. In the 1930s he worked in Don, Kuban and in the Crimea as a journalist of districts and regions newspapers. In 1941 he went to the front as a military correspondent.After the war he lived in village Pukhlyakovsky in Yust-Donetskydistrict,where he had written his works: “ Severe Field” “Restricted Area”“Echo of War”  etc. The feature film was shot by his novel “Gipsy”.

Slide4. RazinStepanTimofeevichwas born in town Cherkassk (now it is stanitsaStarocherkasskaya in Aksai district.) He was Don Cossack, who became the leader of peasant war in Russia in 1667-1671.In 1670 he was the leader of cossacks, who came out againstthe government and captured cities Tsaritsyn, Astrakhan, Saratov, Samara. Near town Simbirsk they were defeated. In 1671 in town Kagalnitsky(now it is Konstantinovsky district) Razin was captured and he was executed in Moscow. In 1921 in Starocherkasskthe museum named after StepanRazin was opened thanks to the local teachers.

PlatovMatveiIvanovichwas a count and general of cavalry. From 1801 to 1818 he was a military ataman of Don’s army. He wasan honorary doctor of law of Oxford University. He was born in town Cherkassk. Platov is a founder of town Novocherkassk. He took part inthe Great Patriotic War in 1812. In 1814 Platov with cossacks’ regimentsentered the defeated Paris. He died in his estate Yelanchik nearTaganrog(now it is village Vesyolo- Voznesenovka in Neklinovsky district.) He is buried in the tomb of Novocherkassky Ascension Cathedral.

Slide5. Grechko Andrei Antonovich was born in village Golodaevka (now it is Kuibyshevo) in 1903. He was Marshal of the Soviet Union, twice Hero of the Soviet Union. In 1926 he leftthe sixth cavalry school in Taganrog. In 1941 he graduated fromAcademy of General Staff. He took part in the Great Patriotic Warand commanded some armies. From 1967 to 1976 he was heading Ministry of Defence of the USSR. He had made much for developing of his native village and Kuibyshevsky district.

Kutakhov Pavel Stepanovich was born in village Malo-Kirsanovka in 1914. He was the Chief Marshal of Aviation, twice Hero of the Soviet Union, Lenin Prize laureate. From 1929 to 1935 he was studying in Taganrog. During the Great Patriotic War he was a commander of fighting aircraft regiment and made 367 operational flights. He took part in 79 air fights, shot down 14 planes personally and 28 planes in the group. From 1969 to 1984he was a Commander-in-Chief of Air Forces of the USSR.

Slide6.Dzhanibekov Vladimir Alexandrovichwas born in 1942. His childhood he spent in stanitsaYegorlykskaya. He is a pilot-cosmonaut of the USSR, major-general of aviation, twice Hero of the SovietUnion. His first flight into space was in 1978 on the spaceship”Unit-27”. During his next flights he worked at the orbit stations”Salut-6” and“Salut-7”. He is the only man, who flew into space five times.

Korzun Valery Grigorievich was born in 1953 in village Klevtsovo, Krasnosulinsky district. In 1970 he left school № 2 in city KrasnySulin. In 1974 he graduated from Kachinskoe military flying college. He is a cosmonaut-tester, Hero of Russia. His first flight into space was in 1996, where he spent 197 days. During his second flight in 2002 as a commander of Russian- American crew he spent 189 days into space. He came out into the open space twice.

Kalinenko Ivan Grigorievich was born in 1920 and died in 2000.He was a scientist - selectionist, a corresponding member ofAcademy of Sciences of Russia, an academician of Russian Academyof Agricaltural Sciences, Hero of Socialist Labour, State Prize laureate,Honoured agronomist of the Russian Federation. Since 1955 he had beenworking at Zernograd’s selection station. He created 34 new andremarkable sorts of wheat (“Rostovchanka” “Donshchina” etc.)They are grown not only in our country, but in other countries too.He is the author of more than 200 scientific works.

Pavlov MikhaelAlexandrovich was a scienctist-metallurgist, an academician of Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Hero of Socialist Labour and State Prizes laureate. He was born in 1863 in stanitsa Yust –Bystryanskaya ( now it is Yust- Donetsky district). Having graduated the Institute of Mines in Petersburg in 1895, he worked at thefactories of Ural. Then he moved to Sulin (now it is city KrasnySulin), where he organized and improved blast-furnace melting on anthracite.Later he worked at Taganrog metallurgical works. Since 1904 he was a professor of Petersburg Polytechnical Institute. He died in 1958.

Slide8. Obraztsova Yelena Vasillievnawas born in 1937. She is a famous opera singer, People’s artist of the USSR, Lenin Prize laureate,Laureate of international competitions of vocalists, Professor of Moscow Conservatoire. In the 1950s she attended Taganrog secondary school №10 and musical school after P.I.Tchaikovsky.Then she entered Rostov musical college. After graduating from Leningrad Conservatoire she became a soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre. She performs at the stages of famous opera houses such as“Metropoliten-opera” “La Scala” “Covent-Garden”.                                                                                   Tanich Mikhael Isaevich is a famous poet and author of songs. He was born in Taganrog in 1923. He attended school №7 and №10.He left school in Rostov- on-Don and got his certificate of education in the first day of the Great Patriotic War. In January, 1942he went to the front. After war he entered the architectural faculty of Rostov Civil Engineering Institute. He is a member of Writers Unionsince 1968. He had written such songs as “Komarovo” “Aty-Baty”“Farewell of Love” “What Can I Say About Sakhalin?” “The WeatherAt Home”.

Slide9.Faina Grigorievna Ranevskaya was born in Taganrog in 1896. She was an actress of theatre and cinema, People’s actress of the USSR, State Prizes laureate. She finished Mariinskaya Gymnasium. In 1915 she began to act at the Crimea and Rostov theatres. But since the 1930s she had played at Moscow theatres.She starred in such films as”Cindarella” “Dream” “Spring” “Be careful, Granny” “They have Motherland” and others. She was very talented and great actress. She died in 1984.

Rybnikov Nikolai Nikolaevichwas a famous and skilful actor,People’s artist of Russia. He attended Belokalitvinskaya railway school. In 1953 he graduated from State Institute of Cinematography. He became popular after starring in such films as“Height”, “Girls”, “Spring in Zarechnaya Street” ,“Ivanov’s family”and many others.

Slide10. Sergei Fyodorovich Bondarchuk is a famous actor and director, People’s artist of the USSR, Lenin Prize laureate and State PrizesLaureate, Hero of Socialist Labour. His childhood he spent in Taganrog, where he attended school №4. He graduated from Rostov Theatre College. He is a winner of international cinema festivals in Karlova Vara and in Moscow. He got Oscars. He shot such films as “Steppe”, “Waterloo”, “They Fought for Their Motherland”, “War and Peace”, “The Fate of a Man”, where he played the leading parts.

Slide11.Ponedelnik Victor Vladimirovich was born in 1937 in Neklinovsky district. He is a sportsman, a journalist and a public man. He is Honoured Master of Sports in football. He played for the club “Rostselmash”. He was the best football player four times from 1960 to 1963 in the USSR. He trained the team “Rostselmash”. From 1984 to 1990 he was the main editor of weekly magazine“Football-Hockey”.

Alekseev VasilyIvanovch was born in 1942. He is a weight- lifter. He is also Honoured Master of Sports in weight lifting in the USSR. He has been living in Shakhty since 1966. He is a two-time champion of Olympic Games (in 1972 and in 1976). An eight- time World champion, an eight- time champion of Europe. He set 80 world records. He is considered to be the best sportsman of the 20th century in      1999 in Greece. In 2000 he became the legend of Russian sport of the 20th century.

Sholokhov MikhaelAlexandrovichwas born in village Kruzhilin (now Sholokhovsky district) in 1905.But his childhood he spent in village Karginsky. Sholokhov began writing at 17. In 1924 Sholokhov returned to Vyoshenskaya, where he had been living for 60 years, and devoted himself entirely to writing. In the same time he married Maria Petrovna Gromoslavskaya, they had two daughters and two sons.  His first book” The Don’s Tales”, a volume of stories about the Cossacks of his native region during World War I and the Russian Civil War, was published in 1926. In the same time he began writing “The Quiet Don Flows”, which earned Stalin Prize and took him fourteen years to complete(1926-1940). He got Nobel Prize in Literature in 1965 for this novel. For another novel “Virgin Soil Upturned” he got Lenin Prize. He wrote about the Great Patriotic War in his unfinished novel “They Fought for Their Motherland”. These novels brought a great success to him. Sergei Bondarchuk shot the films by Sholokhov’s short story “The Fate of a Man” and novel “They Fought for Their Motherland”.
