(The fourth Monday of every May) This holiday, on the fourth Monday of every May, is a day on which Americans honor the fallen soldiers. On Memorial Day, the President or Vice President of the United States gives a speech and lays a wreath on the tombs. Members of the armed forces shoot a rifle salute in the air.
(The 4 th of July) Independence Day is regarded as the birthday of the United States as a free and independent nation. Most Americans simply call it the "Fourth of July," on which date it always falls. It is a day of picnics and patriotic parades, a night of concerts and fireworks.
(Second Monday in October) This day commemorates Italian navigator Christopher Columbus' landing in the New World on October 12, 1492. The first recorded celebration of Columbus Day in the United States took place on October 12, 1792.
(The fourth Thursday in November) The holiday dates back to 1621, the year after the Puritans arrived in Massachusetts The Thanksgiving feast became a national tradition
(The 31th of October) Halloween has a special significance for children, who dress in funny or ghostly costumes and knock on neighborhood doors shouting "Trick or Treat!” Since the 800's November 1st is a religious holiday known as All Saints' Day.
(The 25 th of December) The decorating of homes for Christmas is very common. Most American who observe Christmas have a Christmas tree in their homes. Most Americans send greeting cards to their friends and family at Christmas time.
On the second Sunday in May, American children of all ages treat their mothers to something special. It is the one day out of the year when children, young and old, try to show in a tangible way how much they appreciate their mothers. The United States is one of the few countries in the world that has an official day on which fathers are honored by their children. On the third Sunday in June, fathers all across the United States are given presents, treated to dinner or otherwise made to feel special.
One other day that most Americans observe, even though it is not an official holiday, is February 14, Valentine's Day. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day. It falls on November 11, the day when that war ended in 1918. Flag Day is observed in the United States to commemorate the adoption of the Stars and Stripes by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.
