Good afternoon, everybody! Today is an unusual lesson – we are playing the game “What? Where? When?” The theme is Russia. All our questions are about Russia. The birch tree, as you know, is a symbol of Russia. There are some of them, but they haven’t got any leaves. You’ll get a leaf for the right answer. At the end of our lesson we’ll see whose birch tree will have more leaves.
There are two teams: Dymkovo Toys and Matryoshka Dolls. They’ll tell you about themselves just now.
“Dymkovo Toys”: Dymkovo toys are the most famous folk arts in Vyatka. Dymkovo is a suburbs of Vyatka. It is a birth place of bright colour sculptures. The village of Dymkovo was founded by people from Veliki Ustyug. They were the first to model beautiful clay figurines. These wonderful figurines depict Vyatka residents with Vyatka balalaika and local accordion, wild and domestic animals, “tea-drinking” episodes and much more.
The colours and paints are lively and bright –
Red, golden, blue, pink, orange and white.
Each toy is a masterpiece and an art treasure,
It makes people laugh and gives them great pleasure.
The toys make the children joyful and kind
And raised their souls, spirit and mind.
“Matryoshka Dolls”: The Matryoshka doll came to Russia from Japan at the end of the 19th century. The first Matryoshka was a girl in a print dress, a white apron and a bright shawl, carrying a rooster under her arm. There were six other dolls inside her. The doll looked very Russian and soon became popular. The name Matryoshka came from the common Russian name Matryona. Today, Matryoshkas are made in many parts of Russia. Some of the Matryoshka dolls represent characters from Russian literature, fair tales and politics. Most of the dolls have 5 to 7 pieces. But some sets are really big and have 50 pieces. The biggest piece is one meter high and the smallest one is one centimeter high.
Matryoshka Dolls are made of wood.
Their bright colours help people smile and be in good mood.
They are displayed in many lands –
Great Britain, Italy and France,
In Berlin, New-York, Birmingham and many cities of Japan.
Thank you very much for your representation. You get one leaf for it.
Our contest begins. (Вращает волчок и с его помощью выбирается сектор вопросов – Geography, History, Folklore, Food, Literature, Music, Video Question or Special Days and Festivals).

(Reading)
In medieval Russia, Rus (980-1548) people were very close to nature. They settled on plains near rivers and lakes. These places contained a lot of fish, so that, not surprisingly, many Russians were skillful fisherman.
Rus was rich in forests in medieval times and almost everything was made of mood. People lived in wooden houses, used wooden cutlery and made wooden furniture. There was even a wooden Russian tsar’s palace in the village of Kolomenskoye that was known as the eighth wonder of the world. Russian craftsmen built houses and churches using only axes and no nails.
The diet of the people at this time was healthy, but not very rich. Russians grew wheat and rye. Grain was very important and the basic ingredient for black rye bread, buckwheat kasha and kvas – a drink that was also used as stock for vegetable soup. Black rye bread and buckwheat kasha remain popular; in fact black rye bread is enjoyed in many other countries today.
Animals were very important to medieval Russians. Horses were used to plough and pull sokhas, cows gave milk and furs were high-value animal products obtained from the forests. Fur was a significant Russian export and is still is.
Medieval Russians pagan before 988 AD. They believed in many gods instead of one and were nature worshippers whose gods were associated with rthe sun, the thunder, the wind, animals and birds. Russian fairy tales are rich in supernatural characters like Baba Yaga, Kashchey, the firebird, etc. goodness and kindness were regarded as very important features of human beings. Although old Russia was not a perfect world, it was a very human one.
- Now, look at the portraits of famous Russian people and answer the question “Who are they? Why do all the Russian people still remember about them?
Folklore: Let’s speak about Russian craft. What Russian craft centers do you know? Choose one of the items and describe it.
Food: Well, I know that almost all of you know Russian food very well. Now, you have an opportunity to taste some Russian meals prepared by your parents. Please, send one pupil to take part in this contest. Close your eyes and eat. Try to guess what it is.
- It is a yoghurt – like drink made from milk, east and lactic acid bacteria. (kefir)
- It is dry granulated cream cheese. (cottage cheese)
OK, I see you are very clever. Now, I’ll show you a picture. Try to describe it, speaking about Russian ceremony of drinking tea.
E.g. Traditionally, Russian tea is served with a lump of sugar and lemon, along with various jams and preserves, honey and Russian cookies or pies.
So, we’ve spoken about Russian tea, but there is one picture more. Please, look at the picture and say “Why are the mushrooms so useful? and Why do Russian people like them so much?”
E.g. Chanterelles are used in medicine.
Literature: I know one famous Russian poet. This person was born 6th July, 1799. He studied at the Lyceum in Tsarskoye Selo. Then he was exiled to Mikhailovskoye.
E.g. The years in exile were hard, but the natural beauty of his surroundings helped to lift Pushkin from depression.
Music: Now, listen to the famous Russian songs and try to guess what they are. д.)
Video Question: Well, I hope you like to watch the films. I’ve got two of them. Please watch and answer the questions.
What are Russian State Schools like?
Special Days and Festivals: Listen to me very attentively. I’ll read you some sentences. Try to guess what holiday it is.
- This holiday was decided to celebrate in 1910 in German. In Russia people began to celebrate it in 1913. On this day men do all the house work and cook. All women get flowers and sweets. (Mother’s Day)
- This holiday is an ancient holiday which dates back to the 9th century. It begins a week before Shrove Monday, which is the last Monday before the 40-day fasting period of Lent. (Shrovetide)

Columbus Day
Today we take for granted that the world is round. In the fifteenth century, however, people believed that the world was flat. They laughed at or jailed those who dared think that the world was in the shape of a globe.
There were educated persons, however, who reasoned that the world must be round. An Italian named Christopher Columbus was bold enough to push his notion, and ask for money to explore the seas, and find what he thought would be the other hemisphere of the earth. Portugal, Italy and England refused to support such a venture.
Christopher Columbus convinced Queen Isabella of Spain that there was a new, easier route to Asia and possible new lands for Spain. Columbus first asked Queen Isabella for help in 1486, but it was years before she agreed….provided that he conquer some of the islands and mainland for Spain. Columbus would also be given the title of "Admiral of All the Ocean Seas".
Finally, on August 3, 1492, he and ninety men set sail on the flagship Santa Maria. Two other ships came with him. Three long months went by. His men became tired and sick, and threatened to turn the ships back. On October 11th, ten o'clock at night, Columbus saw a light, which, in fact, was land. The next morning at dawn they landed.
Christopher Columbus and his crew had expected to see people native to India that's why they called the first people they saw "Indians". From the "Indians" they learnt that the island was called Guanahani (The Bahamas Island). When they landed on the island that is now Cuba, they thought they were in Japan. After three subsequent voyages Columbus was still unenlightened. He died a rich and famous man, but he never knew he discovered new lands.
Few celebrations marked the discovery until hundreds of years later. The continent was not even named after Columbus, but an Italian explorer Amerigo Vispucci. Out of pride for their native son, the Italian population of New York City organized the first celebration of the discovery of America on October, 12, 1866. Later they called it Columbus Day. In 1937 president Franklin Roosevelt proclaimed every October 12 as Columbus Day. Since 1971, it has been celebrated on the second Monday in October. Columbus Day is also celebrated in Italy and most Spanish-speaking countries.
Answer the questions.
1. What did people think about the world in the past?
2. How did Columbus convince the Queen of Spain to give him ships and money?
3. Why did Columbus call the people he saw "Indians"?
4. Who was the new continent named after?
5. What is the history of Columbus Day?

Santa Maria Franklin Roosevelt

Hello! I am Christopher Columbus. I grew up thinking and dreaming about great sea adventures.
When I was 191 started my travels by ships. Once in a battle our ship sank and I was wounded. I
grabbed a large oar and jumped into the sea. How luck I was to stay alive!
Then I moved to Liaison, a sea port in Portugal. There I met a beautiful woman named Donia Felipa and soon married her. We were really pleased when our little son Diego was born. But I was still thinking about sailing west to the Indies and that's why I took my plans to Queen Isabella and king Ferdinand of Spain. Although they showed interest they were busy at war. Finally Queen Isabella sold her crown jewels to buy my ships. And on August, 3, 1492, 1 sailed from Spain.
My sailors feared that we wouldn't be able to find a way back home. On the 13th of October I
saw land! My dream came true. My sailors were very happy. We were given grand reception by the local people. As soon as I got back home I was made an admiral.
