There’s an expression in the Russian language:
“the monomah’s hat” (шапка Мономаха) that means “the weight of the power”.
U S H A N K A
According to ancient deeds the first “ushanka” was presented to the Russian prince in Moscow.
It was decorated by sable fur and gold. These hats had been used for 300 years by Russian people.
Hats are worn by almost everybody in Russia: by soldiers,
by children
The girl’s gear
In ancient times Russian girls didn’t cover their heads during warm weather. They wore simple tapes.

Rich girls wore even crowns from silver, bronze, decorated with gold. These items were called “увясла”, that is “ something tied.”
The woman’s gear
When girls had married, they began to have their heads covered with a “повой” that means a kerchief /platok/. Here you see it with a “kika”- two horns,a guard from evil.
In cold weather girls and women wore different kinds of kerchiefs or platoks.
They embroided them even with gold. The manner of wearing was to tie on the back of the head.
Neck hoops
In last times women liked to wear metal hoops. They believed them to have the magic power and prevent the soul to leave the body.

In old Russia it was called “griva”, one of the meanings of a neck in ancient Russian language.

Spreading over the world
Russian decorations are very often found in Western Europe: in Sweden, Austria, Germany, Hungary and Great Britain.
Coats
In cold weather men and women put on upper clothes from smooth woolen cloth. They were called “swits”/cвиты/- wrapping around the body.
Adult examination
When boys and girls had grown up they were given adult clothes. Thus their new independent life began.
They had to take an exam before themselves and people.
