. Wales is one of the parts of the United Kingdom. It is situated in the south-west of the island of Great Britain. Wales is washed by the Irish Sea in the north, be the Bristol Channel in the south and by Saint George’s Channel and Cardigan Bay in the west.
The west coast, mid Wales and North Wales are wild and beautiful. Wales has high mountains, including Mount Snowdon , the second highest mountain in Britain
But it is also a land of mountains and valleys, streams and waterfalls.
In North Wales you can follow mountain paths for miles and miles
The Dee River , with its headwaters in Bala Lake, the largest natural lake in Wales, flows through northern Wales into England.
Numerous smaller rivers cover the south, including the Blue Dragon River, the Usk , the Wye,the Teifi , and the Towy .
The Romans settled in Cardiff in 55 AD and built a military fort on the site of Cardiff Castle. Cardiff became a city in 1905 and was crowned the capital of Wales in 1955. Today, Cardiff has a population of 328000 and attracts more than 12 million visitors a year.
St. David is the patron saint of Wales. He was a monk who lived on bread, water, herbs and leeks and died on March 1, 589 A. D
Symbols of Wales The leek had been recognized as the emblem of Wales since the middle of the 16th century. The daffodil is also a Welsh national emblem because its Welsh name is translated as a type of leek.
Flag of Wales. The Red Dragon of Wales , although perhaps of Chinese origin, was introduced to Britain by the Romans some eighteen hundred years ago
A favourite souvenir for the tourists is a Welsh love spoon . They are made of wood and are carved very beautifully. Originally, they were made by young men as a love token for their sweethearts. There are many different designs demonstrating the skill and love of the hopefulsuitor . If the girl kept this present, all was well, but if she sent it back, she did not want him.
The Welsh speak English. But the Welsh language is spoken widely, especially in the north of the country and it is still the first language for many people.
National Customs and Traditions The National Eisteddfod is the national festival of Wales, its language and culture. Its origins date back to the 12 th century, although it was definitively established as an annual event during the 1860s. Even then, a powerful storm almost put paid to one of the early events, but organisers voiced their determination to see it succeed after thousands of people showed up to celebrate the best in Welsh writing, music and performing
