Listening Comprehension Exam In this part of the exam, students will usually listen to 3 authentic or semi-authentic recordings.

GENERAL TIPS Take advantage of the time before the recording starts. Read the instructions carefully . You’ll find out what kind of text you’re going to hear, who’s going to speak and what they’ll speak about. Try to imagine what they might say .

GENERAL TIPS Take advantage of the time before the recording starts. Think about specific words which might appear in the recording, e.g. synonyms of the words or phrases used in the questions.
GENERAL TIPS 2. Expect to hear vocabulary paraphrases. The same content will be expressed in the recording and in the question using different words . Typical vocabulary paraphrases include: synonyms: He works for the army .=He ’ s employed by the military . antonyms: The test we wrote today was quite difficult .= The test we wrote today wasn’t easy at all.
GENERAL TIPS 2 . Expect to hear vocabulary paraphrases. Grammatical paraphrases may also appear: They haven’t met for ten years.=The last time they met was ten years ago.
GENERAL TIPS 3. Be careful if the same word or phrase appears in both the recording and the question, it could be a trap. In these situations, ask yourself, “Is the meaning of the whole sentence really the same in the question and in the recording?”
GENERAL TIPS 4. Don’t substitute information in the recording for your general knowledge of the world. The questions are always about the content of the recording. If a statement makes sense according to your general knowledge or experience, that doesn’t necessarily mean it is the correct answer in the exam task. Remember that correct answer is the one which agrees with the content of the recording and not your knowledge of the world.
GENERAL TIPS 5. Try to guess the meaning of unknown words. Don’t panic if you hear any words or phrases that you don’t know. Remember that your task is to find the necessary information and not to understand all the words in the recording. Try to use the context to guess the meaning of unknown words. In the worst case, simply ignore the phrases you don’t know.
