Margaret Hilda Thatcher , Baroness Thatcher (née Roberts, 13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013) was a British politician who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990 and the Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990. She was the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century.

A Soviet journalist called her the "Iron Lady" , a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style.

Thatcher was born in Grantham on 13 October 1925. Her father owned two grocery shops. Margaret was introduced to conservative politics in her early years by her father, who was a member of the town's council.

She graduated from Oxford in 1947 as a Chemistry Bachelor of Science degree. Thatcher won a seat in the House of Commons in 1959.

As a leader of the Conservative Party, Thatcher made history in May 1979, when she was appointed Britain's first female prime minister.

Margaret Thatcher was granted her own coat of arms in 1992. The supporters are: an Admiral of the Royal Navy and Sir Isaac Newton. The key and the two royal lions of England represent her tenure as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury . The tower and portcullis represent her time at the Palace of Westminster as Member of Parliament.
