Wales is a peninsula washed by the sea on three sides: the Bristol Channel in the south, the St. George’s Channel in the west, the Irish Sea in the north. Its territory is 20,8 thousand sq. km.

Wales is mainly a mountainous land with an agricultural economy and an industrial coal-mining area in the south. The landscape is beautiful. Many English people move to W ales when they retire.

Cardiff, a large city in the south of Wales, was chosen as the capital in 1955, mainly because of its size.

Eisteddfod is a meeting of people interested in Welsh poetry, Welsh songs and music. There are competitions at an Eisteddfod, too: in writing poetry and music, and in singing. Every year, in August, there is a national Eisteddfod. One year it is in a town in North Wales; the next year it is in a town of South Wales. It lasts for a week.

Some want to listen to the poetry, some want to listen to the singing and some just want to meet their friends and speak Welsh. Between 10 000 and 15 000 people come to the Eisteddfod every day.

The Welsh wear the same clothes as the English. But on holidays Welsh women wear red cloaks, long black skirts, aprons and high black hats on their heads. The men do not have a national costume. They smile, “We have no money after we have bought clothes for our wives!”
