Many years ago, Mr Tailor, an Englishman, stayed in a hotel in Germany. He usually had lunch in a little cafe. Every time he came to the table, a German who was sitting there stood up and said: "Mahlzeit." The Englishman answered: "Tailor."

One day, Mr Tailor met an English friend. "The Germans have strange traditions," he said. "Every time I come to the cafe for lunch, a German stands up and tells me his name."

"That seems strange to me, too," the friend said. "What does the man say?" "He tells me his name — Mahlzeit," Mr Tailor answered. His friend laughed: "Mahlzeit" isn't his name, it's the German word for "good appetite" The German is a polite man and he is simply saying "Mahlzeit" to you because you are going to eat."

The next day, when Mr Tailor came into the cafe, he smiled to the German and said, "Mahlzeit." The German stood up and answered: "Tailor!"

Travelling

One beautiful spring morning right after my 12th birthday my parents and I decided to travel. My mum told me to pack up my things. It was warm and sunny and I decided to take a pair of jeans, a sweater, a couple of football shirts and the sun glasses, of course. We went to the seashore. It was a little windy there and I saw as great waves were coming on the beach. The birds were flying above the water, they were looking for the fish, I guess.

Later it was found out that we had neighbours. It was also a family from Utah. It took them a week to come there. Very soon I saw a girl of my age. She was walking with her dog. The girl’s name was Tracy. We liked to walk together with her dog, his name was Spike, he used to run along the beach and make a lot of splashes. Very soon we became friends.

After a week we came back home, but Tracy and I are still friends. Every week I write her a long letter and we often remember our spring holidays.

Shopping Hours in Britain

Shopping hours in Britain are changing. Until a few years ago, shops were opened at nine o’clock in the morning and closed at half past five or six o’clock in the evening. Some also were closed for an hour for lunch. In many towns, shops were closed on Wednesday afternoons. On Sundays, nothing was open. But now some shops are opened for longer hours. Some big shops and many supermarkets never close! If you need a litre of milk or some bread at midnight, you can easily buy it.

For people who work long hours or people who often work at night or early in the morning, like doctors, the new shopping hours are good. If someone finishes work at five o'clock in the morning, they can go to the supermarket on their way home and buy some breakfast or a newspaper or anything else they may need.

But not everyone thinks the new shopping hours are a good thing. Some people say that Sunday is a holiday – who wants to work in a supermarket on a Sunday? But shops are very busy at the weekend and longer shopping hours are here to stay.

          Mr. Hill has not got a family. He has got only two pets: a cat and a dog. The dog’s name is Sebastian and the cat’s name is Mozart.

          Every day Mr. Hill gets up at half past six and takes Sebastian for a walk. The dog is very big and lazy. They go to the park near their house. Usually it is the same (одно и тоже). Mr. Hill says:” Run, Sebastian! Go, boy! Catch the ball!” But the dog only sits on the grass (трава) and looks at the trees. He looks at the people and at the sun.

         It is Saturday morning now and Mr. Hill is in the park with his pet .It is a very nice day. Sebastian is sitting on the path (тропинка, дорожка). The London Underground and the Moscow metro

The London Underground is the oldest one in the world. In 1870 there was the opening of the first line. It was like a tube, that's why English people call the old lines the Tube, the new lines the Underground.

The London Underground is very long. It’s about 300 kilometres long and it has about 300 stations. Some of them are closed on Sundays. The other stations are closed on  Saturdays and  Sundays. The price of tickets isn't low (низкий). It depends (зависит) on the distance. There are comfortable seats in the carriages at the Underground. The walls are white or grey. There are a lot of ads (реклама) on them.

So the word "Underground" in London shows you where the stations are. When you want to find the metro stations in Moscow you look for the letter "M".

The Moscow metro began its work on the 15th of May, 1935. There were 13 stations at that time. Now it has more than 190 stations. A metro ticket costs 28 rubles. Our metro is one of the most beautiful, comfortable and the cleanest metros in the world. We are proud of it.
