The Main Witch:                           Hi, witches, devils, vampiers and other evil

                                                         spirits!     Keep quiet for a minute, will you?

        Keep your ears open so that everybody can hear a bat fly,                    

       a leaf fall down from a tree, or a mous rustle in the dry                                                                            

       grass.

Good evening, dear goblins and ghosts, good evening, all evil spirits! We haven’t seen one another for a whole year. Are you glad to meet today?   Yes, and I am glad to see you too. And who rememberes whywe have gathered here today?

The First Ghost:                          We’ve gathered here to celebrate the most important  holiday – Halloween!  Halloween was first celebrated many centures ago in Ireland and Scotland by Celtic priests called Druids. They observed the end of autumn and the beginning of winter. The Druids thought that Halloween was the night when the witches came out. As they were afraid of the witches they put on different clothes and painted their faces to deceive the evil spirits. They also placed food and small gifts near the doors of their houses for the witches. This was, as they say now, the beginning of the expression “trick or treat” (meaning “give me something or I’ll play a trick on you”).

The Main Witch:                        Who knows any legends connected  with this holiday?

The Second Ghost:                     It is considered that Halloween was brought to America by the immigrants from Ireland and Scotland . In the 19-th century they celebrated Halloween according to their old traditions. As the time went by, grown up people lost interest in Halloween, and it was celebrated almost by children. Dressed very strangely, children held festivals. During their carnival and  after it groups of childrenvisited nearby houses and asked for candies. “Trick or treat! Trick or treat!” was heard everywhere.

Children:                                       Trick or treat, trick or treat,

                                                        Give us something good to eat.

Give us candy, give us cake,

Give us something sweet to take.

Give us cookies, fruit and gum,

Hurry up and give us some.

You had better do it quick

Or we’ll surely play a trick.

Trick or treat, trick or treat,

The Main Witch:                          Who knows any superstitions connected with

                                                        Halloween?

The Third Ghost:                          In recent years, grown up people have begun taking part in Halloween. Young and old take part in parades together.  On the 31-st of October, long before the time when the carnival begins to move, a great number of people get together in one of the streets. They are dressed as witches, demons and other evil spirits. There are hundreds of large orange “pumpkins” in their hands. After the parade the festival lasts almost till early morning.

Chorus:                                           Halloween on parade

You can be something silly

Like a funny ol’ circus clown;

Or you can be something from a storybook,

Like a king or queen with a crown.

You can be a super hero

Like a kind in a comic book;

Or you can be something a litle bit scary,

But a little bit friendly too.

You can get dressed up

In costumes and make up;

You know that it’s only pretend.

And march all around

To the happy sounds,

The fun will never end.

Like an old time movie star,

A doctor, a nurse or  a fire chief,

A driver in a racing car.

From way out in outer space,

Or a character from a cartoon show

                            With a smile upon your face.

The Main Ghost:                I see there is quite a crowd here. But still not everyone has                                                             found the way, as we don’t get together too often – it’s   s                                                    only once a year that we all come to this school. Let us light our magic lights and lanterns for them to find their way quicker. This magic light is visible only to evil spirits and they fly towards it under cover of night.

The Main Witch:                Oh, I see that Jack O’Lantern is here. Will you tell your story, Jack?

Jack O’Lantern:                   My name is Jack and here is my lantern made from a pumpkin. As you see I’ve cut out slits for two yes, a nose and a  mouth, and put a lighted candel inside.  I used to play practical jokes on the devil and I’m punioshed for it. I’m not permitted to enter heaven and have to walk on and on over the earth. As you see, my story is very sad.

The  Main Witch:               I’m sorry for you. And now let’s listen to our Junior Mischief Maker.

Mischief Maker:                   Spider on the floor

                                                There’s a spider on the floor, on the floor,

Who could ask for any more?

Than a spider on the floor.

The Main Witch:                  Oh, I see a new person here. Who are you?

Master of Dirty Tricks:        October

                                                The month is amber,

                                                Gold and brown.

                                                Blue ghost of smoke

                                                Float through the town.

                                                Great V’s of geese

                                                Honk overhead,

                                                And maples turn

                                                A fiery red.

Frost bites he lawn,

The starts are slits

In a black cat’s eye

Before she spits.

At last, small witches,

Goblins; hags,

And pirates armed

With paper bags.

Their costumes hinged

On safety pins’

Go haunt a night

Of pumpkin grins.

The Main Witch:            You have heard about witches’ tricks. I hope you’ve done a lot of them yourselves. Please, turn to the right. Don’t you see these witches? They are coming here.

Witches:                          Ten little witches

One little, two little, three little witches,

Four little, five little, six witches,

Seven little, eight little, nine little witches,

Ten little witches in the sky!

Ten little, nine little, eight little witches,

Seven little, six little, five little witches,

Four little, three little, two little witches, One little witch,

Bye-bye!

The Main Ghost:            You are welcome, dear witches.

Hingema:                         I’m the greatest witch here. My name is Hingema. I’m sure  you have heard about me. But where is my cat?

                                          Oh, dear, if you look around, you’ll see a wonderful land, wich belongs to me.

Stella:                               My name is Stella and I’m the greatest firy in the world.

Hingema:                         This is my country. I was the first to come here.

Stella:                               Let’s no quarrel. This country is big enough for all of us.

Bastinda:                         You are all wrong. I’m the greatest witch in the world and I don’t want to share anything with anyone, even with my sister, Hingema.So, be careful if you argue with me. I’ll make you suffer.

Villina:                              Excuse me for interrupting  you, but  I think that it is very bad to quarrel. This is my magic book. I’ll look into it and tell you what all of you must do.  The book says we must not quarrel. We have to be together if we want to be defeated.

Hingema:                         I don’t want to be defeated.

Bastinda:                         Let’s not quarrel any more.

Villina:                             We must be friendly.

Stella:                               We shall live in peace, and we all will rule over this country.

Witches:                           Witches’ brew

                                           Dead leaves, seaweed, rotten eggs, too;

                                                        Stir them in my witches’ brew.

I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.

Spider eb, mouldy bread, mucky mud, too;

I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.

Ooh, my witches brew.

Ooh, what’s it gonna do to you? Boo!

Floorwax, thumbtacks, purple paint, too;

Stir them in my witches’ brew.

I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.

Fingernails, lunch pails, apple cores, too;

Stir them in my witches’ brew.

I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.

Ooh, my witches brew.

Ooh, what’s it gonna do to you? Boo!

Wrinkled prunes, mushrooms, motor oil, too;

Stir them in my witches’ brew.

I got magic, ala-ka-zama-ka-zoo.

Little Devils:                   We have something to say. We want everybody to listen to us.

The Main Witch:           The floor is given to little deviles. They want to show us their power.

The First Devil:                Hallo!

The Second Devil:          Hallo!

The First Devil:               What are you?

The Second Devil:          I’m the devil of bad behaviour.

The First Devil:               And what do you do, then?

The Second Devil:         You see I don’t like quiet and polite children. I try to make them misbehave and they become naughty and rude.

The First Devil:              That’s great!

The Second Devil:         And what about you? What are you responsible for?

The First Devil:                 I’m the devil of bad moods. I try to make people lonely and sad.

The Main Ghost:            Let’s do our best to make people dissatisfied. Threr are no optimists among us. So let’s listen to a pessimist.

Pessimist:                       Pessimist

                                                       Nothing to do but work,

                                                       Nothing to eat but food,

Nothing to wear but clothes

To keep one from going nude.

Nothing to brethe but air

Quick as flash ‘tis gone;

Nowhere to fall but off,

Nowhere  to stand but on.

Nothing to comb but hair,

Nowhere to sleep but in bed,  

Nothing to weep but tears,

Nothing to burry but dead.

Nothing to sing but songs

Ah, well, alas! Alack!

Nowhere to go but out,

Nowhere to come but back.

Nothing to see but sights,

Nothing to quench but thirst,

Nothing to have but what we’ve got.

Thus through life we are cursed.

Nothing tostrike but a gait;

Everything moves that goes.

Nothing at allbut common sense

Can ever withstand these woes.

The Main Witch:          You are certainly right. Life is so sad. Besides, the sources of evil may do a lot of awful things. In all the fairy tales the witches are greedy and envious. Thy usually kill kind and pretty girls. Listen to the tale about Sleepin Beauty.

Sleeping Beauty

The Main Ghost:          I hope that now you believe that witches are powerful  

and can do a lot of harmful things. We feel pleased when children disobey their parents, and are naughty. We are thrilled with joywhen they lie and tell scary stories. Now listen to one of such stories, which children tell in a low vioce while the others are sitting around a big fire.

Waterspirit:                  What do you come for?

There was an old woman who lived all by herself, and she was very lonely. Sitting in the kitchen one night, she said, “Oh, I wish I had some company”. No sooner had she spoken that down the chimney tumbled two feet from which the flesh had rotted. The old woman’s eyes bulged with terror.

Then two legs dropped to the hearth and attached themselves to the feet.

Then a body tumbled down, then two arms, and a man’s head. As the old woman watched, the parts came together into a great, tall man. The man danced around and around the room. Faster and faster he went. Then he stopped, and he looked into her eyes.

“What do you come for?” he said. “I come  - for YOU!!!

The Main Ghost:             And who remembers why we have gathered here? You are

 right. Halloween is coming.

Ghoul:                               It’s Halloween.

It’s Halloween! It’s Halloween!

The moon is full and bright

And we shall see what can’t be seen

On any other night:

Skeletons and ghosts

Grinning goblins fighting duels,

Werewolves rising from their tombs,

Witches on their magic brooms.

In masks and gowns we haunt the street

And knock on doors for trick or treat.

Tonight we are the king and queen,

For oh tonight it’s Halloween!

The Main Witch:          Oh, time flies so quickly. It’s time for us to disappear. Save  

your lives, evil spirits! I see a lot of happy faces  and clear eyes in front of me. Let’s live here all the evil, all the bad things that are in us or in our life. Then our planet will again become green, blue and white.
