The hedgehog

Pete and Nick were brothers. One summer day they went to the forest. Suddenly they saw a hedgehog.

“Let’s take the hedgehog home!” said Pete.

“Good idea!” said Nick.

“I don’t want to go with you,” said the hedgehog. He rolled into a ball. But the boys didn’t understand him. They took him home.

They put him on the floor. “Let’s play!” they said to the hedgehog. “I don’t want to play! I’m scared!” said the hedgehog. But the boys didn’t understand him.

“The hedgehog must be hungry,” said Pete. “What do hedgehogs eat?” asked Nick. “I think they eat apples,” said Pete. “You are right! I saw a picture in a book. There was a hedgehog carrying an apple,” said Nick.

They gave the hedgehog an apple. “Oh, no! I don’t eat apples! I eat worms!” said the hedgehog. But the boys didn’t understand him.

“The hedgehog must be thirsty,” said Pete. “What do hedgehogs drink?” asked Nick. “They drink milk,” said Pete.  They gave the hedgehog some milk. “Oh, no! I don’t like milk! I am not a baby!” said the hedgehog. But the boys didn’t understand him.

Then their mother came home. “Look, Mum! We’ve got a hedgehog!” said Pete. “But it doesn’t want to play!” said Nick. “And it doesn’t want to eat or drink!” said Pete.

“I’m sad! I’m scared! I want to go home!” said the hedgehog.

And the mother understood him.

“The hedgehog is sad. It’s scared. It wants to go home,” she said to Pete and Nick. “Take him to the forest”.

The brothers brought the hedgehog to the forest.
