I am closely connected with my city because I am its continuation.
By Bahram Bagiradze
When I heard the theme of the composition, I thought immediately, ‘I should write only about the history of Ulan-Ude, about its foundation….’ But then I realized that the theme should describe the other side of the city. That is why I offer you to have a look at Ulan-Ude with my own eyes.
The city is alive. It is not only buildings and interesting people living here. It is something greater for me, having its own life story.
We are good neighbors and true friends. I understood it, having visited the city of Ekaterinburg. It can be impartially considered to be big, but at the same time it is cramped. I confess, it sounds ridiculous and absurd: ‘a megalopolis, having little space’. Believe me, it is possible. Everyone lives in his own inner world and does not let anyone become a part of it. People have their own ‘cities’. It is difficult to breathe because of their congestion. You have to withdraw into yourself, to look for solitude. This bulky and immense city suppresses a man and makes him stressed out. And again this thought came into my mind, ‘In my town I feel so comfortable and cosy while in the megalopolis there is no space for me.’ I realized that there was no better city than my own one.
Having returned home, I rediscovered Ulan-Ude. What a beautiful, kind, amiable city! The most ideal place for me!
I love my city for its unique, untouched nature, vast expanses, green forests, noble hills. Ulan-Ude’s nature can win the affection of any particular person.
Autumn is the most splendid season of the year. In October there are such days when the sky is bright and deep, the leaves seem to be embroidered on the blue silky sky. And everything is disappearing, dissolving in the effluence of the soft sunlight. There are no dirty slum or garages. At this moment my real city appears, and I am on the background of an inconceivably beautiful world tapestry.
I am also captivated by summer in Ulan-Ude whether it is warm and sunny or it rains. I like to listen to the rattle of heels on the wet concrete slabs of square and to the clinking whisper of the trees standing on the roadside.
In my city the trees often talk.
‘Have you ever heard their conversation?’
‘What are they discussing?’ you could wonder.
1
In the morning when I go to school it seemed as if they saw me off, ringing merrily. They confide me their thoughts and dreams. Then the trees again wrap themselves in comfortable blankets of the white fog.
But not everyone listens to the city’s voice. A lot of people have no time even to look round. Probably, that is the reason why some of them do not see the city’s wide white-toothed smile. People rush like shadows, leaving behind hardly perceptible scent of offences and smoke of cigarettes. What if they also have their favorite cities, which are better and more beautiful than mine? Perhaps, it is true, but, as for me, Ulan-Ude is the most extraordinary city, looking like an old childish fairy-tale, which we have kept in mind and soul forever.
The most popular place in winter is a hill in the Verhnyaya Beryozovka area. To put it more precisely, it is not a hill but a ravine, which has been equipped as a ski slope. I am also fond of skiing and every year I look forward to winter.
Sometimes my city is called “noon” because “Ulan-Ude” means “The Red Uda” in translation from the Buryat language. “The Uda” means “noon”. This city bathes in sunlight, which lights up the old buildings and modern architectural complexes.
The times are not separated here. On the contrary, they are closely connected. The past hasn’t disappeared, it exists near us. Walking up and down the old streets, it seems as if you were in the ancient times, you can even feel the spirit of the distant past.

There are lots of monuments, which are very popular among the citizens of our city. For
example, a monument of Battle and Labour Glory, a monument to Fighters for Communism, a monument to the Soldiers of the Buryat Republic taking part in the Great Patriotic War. You can get much useful information about the history of our land in the Museum of History of the city of Ulan-Ude and in The Geological Museum.
The Art Museum named after Ts. Sampilov is one of my favorite ones. It introduces the visitors to painting of the Buryat masters, to Buddhist icon painting, to traditional folk items made of wood, horsehair, bone. It has a great collection of the pieces of work of the Buryat masters.
On the territory of the city there are a lot of objects of cultural heritage. They are architectural and municipal engineering monuments. The most famous among them are a monument on Central Square of the city in the form of Vladimir Lenin’s head and a sculptural composition Mother Buryatia in the image of a woman having a hadak in her hands. It is a symbol of hospitality. It is so wonderful that there are people, who continue the common cause of our ancestors! I can figure out Aldar Balzhinimaev, an Olympic winner in wrestling in 2010, Lyubov Volosova, a bronze medalist in the Olympic Games in London, Boris Shumyatsky, a Soviet statesman and a head of Soviet cinematography, Michael Seryshev, a Soviet and Russian rock musician.
We have many libraries as Ulan-Ude is a reading city. There are more than 27 libraries on the territory of the city. The most popular are The National Library of the Republic of Buryatia, The State Republican Junior Library named after D.R. Batozhabay, The State Republican Children’s Library named after B.Abiduev. Ulan-Ude is considered to be a place of the inflow of young and perspective specialists because there are prestigious academies and universities here. The city has some applied-research institutions, such as The East Siberian Scientific and Design Institute of Fish Industry, Transbaikalia Laboratory of Legal Expertise of the Department of Justice of the Russian Federation.
There is a wide choice of theatres and cinemas in our city. The Opera and Ballet State Theatre is of the most magnificent ones. It was built in 1939 and got a cherished Crystal Globe National Prize. The international committee recognized an indisputable leadership of the theatre in one of the most prestigious nominations, namely “The best art and leisure object”.
There are lots of parks in our city with many trees, sculptures and memorials. The centre of Ulan-Ude is decorated with the first stone building- Odagitrievsy Cathedral.

It is the heart of the old part of the city. This unique building is located in the area of seismic activity. Ascension Church also attracts much attention. It was built in 1789 and named after Peter and Paul, the first apostles.
The ties of friendship, union and brotherhood between Ulan-Ude and other regions are very lasting. This close connection can be seen on the examples of different interregional conferences and sport competitions, which are often held on the territory of our city. For instance, the Interregional Festival “Bikeboom”. The citizens of Ulan-Ude have an active way of life. 6 stadiums, 9 swimming pools, 12 shooting-ranges, 9 ski centers are at our disposal. In 2012 a new big Physical Culture Complex was opened. It has a 50 meter pool and a concert hall for 3500 people. It is a base for our volleyball team, a debutant of Russian Women’s Super League.
Thus, it is a small center for a lot of people, where everyone can find anything to his taste and interest. Ulan-Ude offers its citizens and guests a wide choice of places for spare time and career. My generation realizes that we will live in Ulan-Ude, we will build the future of the city. The undisputed rule from the book ‘The Little Prince’, that suits any house, yard, street and city, should be taken into account.
‘Wake up, wash your face, freshen yourself up and then tidy your city up,’ affirms the author.
I like that my city is growing and getting so beautiful and up-to-date. The streets are wide and clean, the roadsides are bricked up and there are neat green lawns. In the evenings the city is nicely illuminated. I think that the city decoration will be getting more and more interesting.

In my imagination Ulan-Ude would consist of noble edifices, in every square and park there would be wonderful fountains, their stream would be colorful and there would be cheerful or lyrical music around them, creating a festive mood.
‘Utopia!’ you could argue with me.
‘You have another guess coming,’ I exclaim.
We have already made some first confident steps towards this direction. And I hope that this transformation will come to an end soon. I hope I will be able to make a contribution to the development and prosperity of our city.
Perhaps, I will visit some other cities, that interest me, but I firmly believe that there will be no place like Ulan-Ude. I will keep its individuality and fascination in my memory.
‘City’ is a very capacious notion. It has a deep and multifarious meaning. For everyone the city starts with the family. Then it broadens to the surroundings, that are nature and architecture of the city. At last it embraces the people.
First of all Ulan-Ude is those small paths, familiar ins and outs, houses, parks, rivers. Secondly, it has a generous spirit. Its people are hospitable, open, kind and simple. They are distinguished by cordiality and empathy. Thirdly, it is a birthplace, where I made

my first step, had a carefree childhood, went to school, found my friends and met my first love. Ulan-Ude is our home, and everyone has a responsibility for taking care of it. We should do our best not to let its light turn off.
Ch.Ts.Tsydendambaev, a famous Buryat writer said, ‘Ulan-Ude is the smallest big city in the world.’
It is not an oxymoron. To my mind, these words are an accurate description of the city. It is a small province with a big potential!
To say ‘I love my city’ is easy, but to prove it is more difficult. Everyone displays his love differently. For example, poets write poems dedicated to their cities, composers write music, artists paint pictures. I have no such talents but I can say boldly that I do not need a whole world without Ulan-Ude.
