Everybody knows that cats love sleeping. They spend half of their lives asleep and enjoy every minute of it. Other animals have very different sleeping habits, however. For example, some horses may not look like they are asleep, but they are! Horses only spend three hours asleep a day and they do it standing up! Fish sleep for about seven hours but they too have strange habits – they don’t close their eyes to sleep. So, what about people? Most of us sleep for about a third of our lives. But the number of hours we sleep depend on the age. Newborn babies sleep a lot – about seventeen hours in every twenty four. Children need about eleven hours and grown-ups sleep for about eight hours every night. But you’re not just asleep – you’re not really doing nothing. A lot happens during sleep. Dreams are one way that the mind rests after a busy day.

20TH CENTURY FASHION

1.  Before the First World War fashions didn’t change very quickly. Men wore dark suits. They had short hair and moustaches were popular. Women wore long dresses and they had long hair. Under their dresses they wore stiff corsets. These gave women a very narrow waist, but they were very uncomfortable.

2.  In the Roaring Twenties dresses and hair became much shorter. People saw women’s knees for the first time! Corsets disappeared. A straight figure with no waist was fashionable. For men trousers with very wide legs became fashionable. They were called Oxford bags.

3.  In the 30th and 40th hair, dresses and coats became longer again. Men’s fashion didn’t change very much. Men wore a suit, a tie and usually a hat, too. Moustaches were less popular.

4.  In the 1950s people were richer and teenagers spent a lot of money on clothes. For men this was age of a teddy boy. Teddy boys wore long jackets in very bright colours – pink, orange or yellow – and very tight trousers. For women jumpers and blouses with wide skirts and short socks were the fashion. Both men and women wore shoes with long pointed toes. The women’s shoes had high stiletto heels.

5.  The 1960s saw a revolution in clothes. Everything changed. This was the time of the mini- skirt and long boots. For the first time in the twentieth century men had long hair – the famous Beatle haircut.

6.  In the late 1960s and the early 70th the hippy “flower power” style was in. Women were long maxi-skirts. Men wore jeans and brightly coloured shirts or T-shirts. Clothes were very colourful. Very long hair was fashionable for men and women, and beards became more common (only for men, of course).

7.  The 80s brought teenagers with punk hair styles in red, blue, purple and green and brightly coloured make up.

Ron Black has just published a book on fairies and their secret lives. In his book he is trying to prove that fairies exist and live everywhere around us. There are different types of fairies. Some of them are good and they always help people. Other fairies are very hard to please. When they get angry, they can even steal a human child or make you very ill.

Fairies live not just under flowers and leaves in gardens, but also in our homes. There was a custom in some countries to leave something to eat and drink in the corners where people thought the fairies were the most active. Today, as Ron Black writes, people forget to feed fairies properly. That`s why there are so many wars and conflicts in the world.

But does Ron Black really believe in fairies? Has he ever seen one? When we asked such a question, he only smiled. Then he took out a plan of his house and showed where they live in his place: brownies in the bathroom, goblins in the kitchen and pixies in the bedroom upstairs. So who knows? Let`s try. The next time I`ve got a headache, I will remember to leave some milk in the corner of the bathroom.

  1. In Ron`s home

The Earl of Sandwich lived long ago in England .He was a fanatic about playing cards. He didn’t even want to stop playing long enough to eat a meal and refused to put his cards away. So his servant invented a quick meal for him. He put some meat between two slices of bread, so that the Earl could hold his meal in one hand and play cards with the other.

There are many TV shows about young people and their problems. We ask two youngsters, Rita and Meg, about their favourite series and their main characters.

Rita: I think that my favourite series at the moment is Get Real. It is about an American family     with two sons and a daughter. The daughter`s name is Megan. I like her character very much. She is 17 years old. She has got long, dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. She is quite hard-working but she doesn`t have plans to study at university. She hasn`t got many friends because she is quite shy. I like the series because it is about the real problems in young people`s lives. At first it looks like a comedy but then it changes into a real drama.

Meg: I must say I prefer comedy to drama. My favourite TV series is Gilmore Girls. There are two main characters, a single mother and her daughter, a 17-year-old girl called Holly. She is not very tall and she has got long brown hair. Holly is a very good student and an ambitious person. She always reads books and works very hard. She hasn`t got many friends because she is now in a new school. Holly is quiet and not very outgoing, but her mother is a real rebel. I sometimes think that Holly is a kind of a parent and her mother is a little girl.

  1. two American teenagers
  2. Megan and her friends

  1. One special thing about Get Real is that
  1. it shows happy people
  2. it is only about young people

Graffiti is defined as any drawing made on some kind of surface, usually on a wall. The first known example of graffiti was found in ancient Greece. However, the graffiti movement seen in today’s contemporary world originated in the 1960s in the minds of American gang members. New York City became a hub of graffiti tags and images.

The goal of most artists was gaining popularity, which meant having as many tags in as many places as possible. Artists began to break into subway yards in order to paint as many trains as they could and often created elaborate pieces of art along the subway car sides.

By the mid-1970s, most standards had been set in graffiti writing and culture. Yet, as the culture spread outside the city and overseas, the cultural aspect of graffiti in New York City deteriorated almost to the point of extinction.
