The Age of Discovery is a period of European global exploration that started in the early 15th century with the first Portuguese discoveries in the Atlantic archipelagos and Africa, as well as the discovery of the Americas by Spain in 1492, and the Portuguese discovery of the ocean route to the East in 1498, and by a series of European naval expeditions across the Atlantic and later the Pacific, which continued until the 18th century. It is sometimes regarded as a bridge between the Middle Ages and the Modern era, along with its contemporary Renaissance movement. European overseas expansion led to the rise of colonial empires, with the contact between the Old and New Worlds producing the Columbian Exchange: a wide transfer of plants, animals, foods, human populations (including slaves), communicable diseases and culture between the Eastern and Western hemispheres. This represented one of the most-significant global events concerning ecology, agriculture, and culture in history. European exploration allowed the global mapping of the world, resulting in a new world-view and distant civilizations acknowledging each other, reaching the most remote boundaries much later.

Buck - A powerful dog, half St. Bernard and half sheepdog, who is stolen from a California estate and sold as a sled dog in the Arctic. Buck gradually evolves from a pampered pet into a fierce, masterful animal, able to hold his own in the cruel, kill-or-be-killed world of the North. Though he loves his final master, John Thornton, he feels the wild calling him away from civilization and longs to reconnect with the primitive roots of his species. John Thornton - Buck’s final master, a gold hunter experienced in the ways of the Klondike. Thornton saves Buck from death at the hands of Hal, and Buck rewards Thornton with fierce loyalty. Thornton’s relationship to Buck is the ideal man-dog relationship: each guards the other’s back and is completely devoted to the other. The strength of their bond is enough to keep Buck from acting on the forces he feels are calling him into the wild. Spitz - Buck’s archrival and the original leader of Francois’s dog team. Spitz is a fierce animal—a “devil-dog,” one man calls him—who is used to fighting with other dogs and winning. He meets his match in Buck, however, who is as strong as Spitz and possesses more cunning. Spitz is an amoral being who fights for survival with all of his might, disregarding what is right and wrong.
“In a flash Buck knew it. The time had come. It was to the death. As they circled about, snarling, ears laid back, keenly watching for the advantage, the scene came back to Buck with a sense of familiarity. “The Wizard of Oz” If you believe in yourself, all your dreams can come true Frank Baum
Dorothy is the main character of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. She is an orphan and lives with her uncle and aunt on their farm in Kansas, along with her dog, Toto . She is a straightforward little girl who shows courage and perseverance. Dorothy seems to be very young, perhaps only five or six years of age, although she frequently seems to behave as a much older child would. Baum also gives little hint to her appearance. Toto is Dorothy's dog and her constant companion.
The Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion. The Scarecrow complains that he has no brains, but he shows himself to be the most thoughtful of Dorothy’s companions, and his quest for intelligence demonstrates that this is what he values. Similarly, the Tin Woodman places the highest importance on feeling, and shows a continual concern with emotion as he seeks a heart. The Cowardly Lion is a coward in his own eyes, but he accompanies the others through dangerous adventures and sometimes protects the group with his fierce roar.
The little girl, seeing she had lost one of her pretty shoes, grew angry, and said to the Witch, "Give me back my shoe!" "I will not," retorted the Witch, "for it is now my shoe, and not yours." "You are a wicked creature!" cried Dorothy. "You have no right to take my shoe from me." "I shall keep it, just the same," said the Witch, laughing at her, "and someday I shall get the other one from you, too." This made Dorothy so very angry that she picked up the bucket of water that stood near and dashed it over the Witch, wetting her from head to foot. Instantly the wicked woman gave a loud cry of fear, and then, as Dorothy looked at her in wonder, the Witch began to shrink and fall away. "See what you have done!" she screamed. "In a minute I shall melt away." "I'm very sorry, indeed," said Dorothy, who was truly frightened to see the Witch actually melting away like brown sugar before her very eyes. "Didn't you know water would be the end of me?" asked the Witch, in a wailing, despairing voice. "Of course not," answered Dorothy. "How should I?" "Well , in a few minutes I shall be all melted, and you will have the castle to yourself. I have been wicked in my day, but I never thought a little girl like you would ever be able to melt me and end my wicked deeds. Look out—here I go!"

Rendezvous with Rama by Arthure C. Clarke By the 22nd Century, man has colonized the planets. There is political rupture amongst the interplanetary council, particular from Mercury, newest and hardiest of the colonies. And then, into the picture, comes Rama. At first thought to be an asteroid, the unmanned probe Sita is sent to photograph it, showing it to be a perfect cylinder: 20 Kilometres in diameter, 54KM long. An alien artifact, from inter-stellar space, that has travelled on a perfect trajectory for perihelion for hundreds of thousands of years .
Bill Norton Bill Norton is the 55-year-old commander of the spaceship Endeavour. He leads a mission whose task is to explore the alien spacecraft Rama. As a commander, he takes an active role in most of the missions. Just like a true captain, he is always the first one to go in and the last one to come out. Norton has two wives, who live on different planets. He is traveling through space for most of the time, so he keeps in contact with his spouses by sending them near-carbon copies of his messages. His hero is Captain James Cook, a mythical explorer of the 18th century. He often relies on the imaginary advices of Captain Cook to make important decisions regarding his missions. Whenever he faces a difficult decision or a problem that science alone cannot resolve, he imagines what Cook would do in the same situation .
All its charms revolve around setting. Rama itself is so unutterably cool that the reader is just swept away. The plot is simply exploring Rama; the characters exist to explore Rama; all conflict exists in the context of Rama . I t started simple and then kept surprising you with a new big picture of what it was all about.
