Geography The British Isles has two islands. The largest island is called Great Britain. The smaller one is called Ireland.The southern part of Ireland is the Republic of Eire. The Northern part is a part of Great Britain. Ireland is separated from Britain by the Irish Sea.
About 15,000 years ago, Ireland was completely covered by thick glaciers.
Nowadays Ireland is known for its green fields. In fact, its nickname is the Emerald Isle.
There are mountains on the south-east of the Northern Ireland. Slieve Donard is the highest point in Northern Ireland (850 metres) Belfast's most prominent peak is Cavehill .
Lough Neagh , is the largest freshwater lake both on the island of Ireland and in the British Isles .

Northern Ireland’s famous attractions include the Mourne Mountains and the Walled City of Derry.
The mountains, and the surrounding area offers great outdoor activities such as rock climbing, snowboarding, horse riding, fishing and golf.
The Walled City of Derry on the other hand, is one of the few retained walled cities in Europe. It was built as defences. Today the Walled City is one of great sights to see.
Saint Patrick's Church in Saul, County Down It was built to commemorate the 1500th anniversary of Saint Patrick’s mission. It is a small church. The bell tower is in the classical shape of an Irish round tower. The church is simple. A small stained-glass window picturing Patrick himself is the only decoration. It is the first Christian church in Ireland.
The Fermanagh Lake lands, and the Giant’s Causeway and Coastal Route are also other major attractions in Northern Ireland.
There are many other things to enjoy in Northern Ireland such as the shopping, entertainment, night life and nature activities.

Pierce Brosnan is an actor. Better known as James Bond.
Irish writers are Kate O’Brien Joyce Cary, Clive Staples Lewis.
16 .10. 1854 — 30 .11. 1900 Oscar Wilde was more successful. He is known all over the world. People read his novels.
Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900) was an Irish writer and poet. He became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Wilde's parents were successful. Their son became fluent in French and German early in life. At university Wilde proved himself to be an outstanding classicist. He studied at Oxford. After university, Wilde moved to London into fashionable cultural and social circles. He died in Paris at the age of forty-six.
His most famous work include “The Picture of Dorian Gray” and “The Canterville Ghost”.

Gaelic Football is the most favorite sport in Ireland.
Hurling is Ireland's most characteristic sport. It has an ancient history and is mentioned in many old Irish tales.
The Irish have a deep love for horses. They say that Horse Racing is the sport of kings. Most of the horse races take place from March until November.
Irish food is simple: meat, seafood, potato, vegetables. Traditional meals are stews and roast meat.
Irish dances are known all over the world.
One of the greatest Irish festivals is St. Patrick's Day
It is a cultural and religious holiday widely celebrated on the 17th of March. The day generally involves public parades and festivals.
