The day the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress
In 1775, people in New England (the USA) began fighting the British for their independence. On July 2, 1776, the Congress secretly voted for independence from Great Britain. The Declaration of Independence was first published two days later on July 4, 1776.
Some interesting facts
The first description of how Independence Day would be celebrated was in a letter from John Adams to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776. He described " pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations" throughout the United States. However, the term "Independence Day" was not used until 1791.
(
The first Independence Day was celebrated on July 8, 1776: Although the Declaration of Independence was approved on July 4, 1776, it was not made public until July 8.
Families often celebrate Independence Day by hosting or attending a picnic or barbecue and take advantage of the day off and, in some years, long weekend to gather with relatives. Decorations ( e.g. , streamers, balloons, and clothing) are generally colored red, white, and blue, the colors of the American flag
Some cities have parades with people dressed as the original founding fathers who march to the music of high school bands.
Independence Day fireworks are often accompanied by patriotic songs such as the national anthem"The Star-Spangled Banner", "God Bless America", "America the Beautiful", "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", "This Land Is Your Land", "Stars and Stripes Forever", and, regionally, "Yankee Doodle" in northeastern states and "Dixie" in southern states. Some of the lyrics recall images of the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812

Mother’s Day in Britain In many places around the world people celebrate mothers’ day on various days because the day has a number of different origins. In Britain there is also a holiday which people call Mother's Day. They celebrate it on the fourth Sunday of March (Lent). It is exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday and usually falls in the second half of March or early April.
Mother’s Day in Britain In the old days many girls from poor families in the country worked in rich houses. They did all the house work and their working day was usually very long. They often worked on Sundays, too. Once a year, it was usually a Sunday in March, they could visit their mothers. They went home on that day and brought presents for their mothers and for other members of their families. They could stay at home only one day and then they went back to their work. People called that day Mothering Day or Mothering Sunday.
Mother’s Day in Britain Mother's Day, or Mothering Sunday, is now a day to honor mothers and other mother figures, such as grandmothers, stepmothers and mothers-in-law. Many people make a special effort to visit their mother. They take cards and gifts to her and may treat her to brunch, lunch or high tea in a cafe, restaurant or hotel. People who cannot visit their mother usually send gifts or cards to her.
A Simnel cake On Mothering Sunday many people prepare a Simnel cake to eat with their family on this day. A Simnel cake is a light fruit cake covered with a layer of marzipan and with a layer of marzipan baked into the middle of the cake. They eat cake and buy gifts of chocolate or flowers for their mothers as way to thank them for all they do. All women try to be nice and happy on this day.
Answer the questions When do British people celebrate Mother's Day? What is another name of Mother's Day? Where did girls work in the old days? How often could girls visit their mothers? What do British people do for their mothers? What do they cook on this day?
Proverbs 1. A mother is a woman who can be in two places at once. 2. Mothers are people who are angry when you are at home and sad when you are away. 3. God cannot be present everywhere and so he created mothers.
Poems A Mother's Love There is no love, like a mother's love, No stronger bond on earth... Like the precious bond that comes from God, To a mother, when she gives birth. A mother's love is forever strong, Never changing for all time... And when her children need her most, A mother's love will shine. My Mom My mom is very special, My mom is very kind, My mom always tells me I'm special, She's always on my mind. My mom watches me grow, My mom watches me cry, Of course she'll always know, She'll never have to tell me goodbye.

In 1620, a religious community sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to settle in the New World.
They settled in what is now known as the state : Massachusetts. They were the first people from Europe to live in the USA.
Their first winter in America was difficult. They arrived too late to grow a rich harvest. Moreover, half the colony died from disease.
The following spring the Indians taught them how to grow corn.
Indians showed them also how to hunt and fish.
In the autumn of 1621 they got a beautiful harvest of corn, barley, beans and pumpkins.
The colonists had much to be thankful for, so they planned a feast. Local Indian chief and ninety Indians were present.
The colonists learned from Indians how to cook cranberries.

Friedrich Schiller and Rotten Apples Friedrich Schiller is a German writer. He wrote famous "Odes to Joy". Creativity was not easy for the writer. When the muse was not there, Schiller asked to bring rotten apples to the office. He put them in a drawer, where they lay, exuding a sweet smell. Surprisingly, it was the scent of rotten apples that helped the writer focus.
Mark Twain and the cabinet – summer-house He had a small summer-house specially equipped for an office, where the writer created his masterpieces. It was strictly forbidden to enter the office. Relatives never came to the secret place.
Johannes Brahms and dirty shoes Johannes Brahms, the famous German composer, also sometimes lost his inspiration. To get it back, he began to clean dirty shoes. A few carefully washed steam helped the composer to concentrate, and he sat down to work.
Vladimir Nabokov and the back seat of the car If a good idea came to his mind, he wrote it down on a small cardboard card and put it in the drawer of the dresser. But Nabokov was engaged in writing at night. He did not work in his office or living room, but in the back seat of a car. Only there the writer could completely distract himself from extraneous factors.
