     Strasbourg est un centre économique et politique de premier plan. C’est la capitale  de l’Alsace. A  Strasbourg  fonctionne le Parlement européen.

     La Bretagne est la région la plus maritime de la France. La ville de Rennes est la capitale régionale de la Bretagne.

     Pas-de-Calais est le nom du détroit qui sépare la France et l’Angleterre. Les navires, les bateaux sont nombreux ici.

    Le port de Marseille est le premier port de la France pour les marchandises. Dans la Côte d’Azur au sud du pays il y a beaucoup de stations balnéaires. Sa capitale est Nice.

    La Bourgogne est une région de l’est de la France. Elle est riche et variée comme son vin, le fameux bourgogne. Sa capitale Dijon est célèbre par sa moutarde et son pain d’épice.

    La Champagne est aussi célèbre par son vin magnifique.

    Grenoble est une ville des  montagnes et des universités. Il est le centre administratif du département Isère et la capitale des Alpes françaises. En 1968 ont eu lieu les Xième Jeux-Olympiques.

   Ajaccio est une ville et un port sur une île de Corse. C’est le centre administratif du département Corse-du-Sud.

Pumpkin is a large round fruit with a thick orange skin and large seeds. Pumpkins are 90% water but they contain potassium and vitamin A. Six of seven continents can grow pumpkins. Nowadays pumpkins have come to symbolize not only the lovely color of the autumn but the spirit of the season as well. A sizable number of movies were made with pumpkin and Halloween themes. Most memorable, perhaps, is the pumpkin carriage in Cinderella.

Pumpkins are believed to have originated in North America. Native American Indians ate pumpkins centuries before the Europeans landed. Seeds from related plants have been found in Mexico dating back to 7000 to 5500 B.C. References to pumpkins date back many centuries. The word pumpkin originated from the Greek word for "large melon" which is "pepon." "Pepon" was changed by the French into "pompon." The English changed "pompon" to "Pumpion."

In the United States, pumpkins go hand in hand with the autumn holidays of Thanksgiving, and, of course, Halloween. At almost every Thanksgiving table is the customary 'Pumpkin Pie'. Pumpkins are carved into decorated lanterns for Halloween. Pumpkin is one of the important symbols of the harvest festival and has been an American-favourite for over 400 years now. A lot of autumn festivals are dedicated to the pumpkin. Farmers from all over the US compete to determine who has grown the heaviest pumpkin.

In the USA, pumpkin is a very popular Thanksgiving dish. It is not sure whether pumpkin was one of the dishes in the first thanksgiving dinner. But they were, however, a part of all traditional meals long before the arrival of the first Europeans. Most parts of the pumpkin are suitable for eating, including the shell, the seeds, the leaves, and even the flowers. When ripe, the pumpkin can be boiled, baked, steamed, or roasted.

E. 

The pumpkin has been very important for centuries. It has been popular with wizards, witches and fairies. Maybe that’s why it is celebrated in so many festivals, folklore and fiction. People make jack o’lanterns at Halloween in the USA. In European and American fairy-tales witches often turn people into pumpkins. Even in modern The Harry Potter novels pumpkin juice is the favourite drink of the students of Hogwart’s school.

Learning foreign languages is important nowadays. I think that any educated person must learn foreign languages. But I prefer English to other foreign languages. Why? English is becoming a global language. A half of billion people in the world use English at home or work. English is the language which is known for the most part of our fine, magnificent and surprising world. English is so widespread that it has become the standard language for all kinds of international communication.
         A lot of problems of the 21st century, such as the problems of war and peace, ecology, can not be solved without speaking the same language.
        The English language is now the first language of about 350 million people, the native language of 12 nations and the official language of more than 33 nations. It means that one of seven people in the world speaks English.
         English is also the international language of businesspeople, pilots and air traffic controllers, sportsmen, scientists and students. If you want to be a stewardess, a pilot or an air control officer you have to learn English, the language of international communication. Every year thousands of people from Russia go to different countries as tourists or to work. They can’t go without knowing the language of the country they are going to. A modern engineer or even a worker cannot work with an imported instrument or a machine if he is not able to read the instruction how to do that.
         Some people learn English because they need it in their work; others to travel aboard and for lots of people learning English is just a hobby.
         The great German poet Goethe once said: “He, who knows no foreign language, does not know his own one.” The knowledge of English is a great power.
