Have you ever heard about the mighty logger Paul Banyan? Well, it’s time you do! They say that Paul was taller than the tallest redwood tree and stronger than 50 bears put together. And not only that - Paul was clever! But what nobody knows is that Paul Banyan had a heart of gold. Paul had a huge helper, Babe the blue ox. One day Paul was cutting down trees in the snow when he came across Babe in a pile of snow. When Paul pulled her out, she was frozen and as blue as the sky. Paul blew on her three times and warmed her up, but she stayed blue. From that day on, Paul Banyan and Babe the blue ox worked together. | 1.How did Paul Banyan show that he had a heart of gold? |
Back to the old times when the country was young, Paul and Babe cleared land for settlers. They cut down trees to make place for farms and towns. They had much work to do. The logs were thick and the roads were so tangled, that they had to straighten them. If they didn’t, the settlers would have a terrible time travelling in the new land. | 2.Why did Paul cut down trees? |
Paul cut for days and days. And Babe would help him by dragging the trees away. Later, they would cut the trees into logs for the settlers. Paul and Babe were good at their work. They knew that people needed a place to live and the logs to build their homes. Finally, he cut down the very last tree. He thought he’d be glad that his work finished but Paul felt sad. | 3.How Paul feel after he cut down the last tree? |
He thought about the settlers. “They won’t get to cool off under a shade tree,” he told Babe. “And they won’t hear leaves rustle in the wind.” | 4. Why did he feel this way? |
Paul did some hard thinking and decided to give up logging. “We are still going to work with trees,” he told Babe. “They’ll just be tiny ones.” With that, Paul and Babe began their new work. | 5.What do you think Paul and Babe’s new work will be? |
6.What clues (подсказки) from the text helped you to make that prediction? |

Занятие 7. Тема: Обучение анализу структуры рассказа. Деление текста на основные части. Story frame. Main parts.
- Task 1. Read the sample text. This is a well-known tale told in a different way. Can you guess the story?
I had to find Cindy. We met last month at the Royal Disco held in my palace. We liked each other immediately and we danced all the songs the DJ played. Suddenly, just before the midnight, she jumped into the sports car shaped strangely like a pumpkin and sped into the night. However, as she was running down the stairs Cindy lost one of her glass sneakers. I asked the palace guards to search the kingdom and find the foot that fit the sneaker. Some foot did fit but none of them were Cindy’s. Even the ads in the royal newspaper didn’t help. After weeks of looking, Cindy was yet not to be found. Finally, I came up with an idea that worked. I followed the traits of the pumpkin seeds. They led me up to Cindy. The title of this story is …… | Palace Immediately - very fast Shape Pumpkin Lose/ lost Sneakers Guards/ Kingdom Ads Follow traits of seeds |
- Story frame.
- THE BEGINNING.
Task 2. Read the explanation, the text and answer the questions.
The story often begins with the statement of a goal (aim) of a main character, that is what the main character want to do, and a setting (when and where the story takes place).

So the little boy went upstairs to his parents’ bedroom and put on one of his father’s ties around the neck. Then Jimmy put on a pair of his father’s shoes. The tie came all the way down to the little boy’s knees, and the shoes flopped like clown’s ones when he walked. But the little boy thought that he looked great. Jimmy ran downstairs to show his father what a big boy he was, but he tripped on the stairs and fell head over heels. Luckily, his father ran and caught him before Jimmy hit the bottom.
- How does Jimmy try to reach his goal (What does he do)? _______________
- What difficulties does the boy face as he tries to be like his father? ______________
- What happens as he tries to be like his father? _______________________
- THE END.
Task 4. Read the explanation, the text and answer the questions.
The end of the story describes the final result – if the main character succeeds or fails and his feelings/ reaction to the final result.
The Little man (end part).
Jimmy felt so warm and safe in his father’s arms that he decided he would stay a little boy after all – at last for now.
- Does Jimmy succeed or fail to reach his goal? _______________
- What is the final result? ______________
- What is Jimmy’s reaction to the final result (How does he feel)? _______________________

Part I. Home task check.
What we did. – We read the story about a little boy who wanted to be a grown up like his father and analyzed the three main parts of the story.
What you should have done. – Analyze the tale about Cindy and the prince.
Model answer:
- Parts of the story –
1)I had to find Cindy. We met last month at the Royal Disco held in my palace. We liked each other immediately and we danced all the songs the DJ played.
2)Suddenly, just before the midnight, she jumped into the sports car shaped strangely like a pumpkin and sped into the night.
3)Finally, I came up with an idea that worked. I followed the traits of the pumpkin seeds. They led me up to Cindy.
2. Story frame questions –
- What is the setting? – last month at the Royal Disco
- Who is the main character? – prince
- What is the goal (what does he/ she want to do)? – to find Cindy

Part II. Analyzing stories and notetaking. dumpster rubbish bin junkyard dump out sort out valuables
Cubs and White Sox – US baseball teams
A day in the dumpster.
It was Friday, and I came home from school. I saw a note on the table. It was from my mum telling me not to forget to take out the rubbish and clean out my desk.
I went to my bedroom and open a desk’s drawer to dump it out. “What a mess!” I said when I looked at a mini-junkyard. I started sorting it out, valuables here, and non-valuables in the rubbish bin. I picked up my first watch. “I cannot throw this watch away,” I thought. “It has great sentimental value to me.” On and on the time went, until finally I came to the last thing, my Cubs and White Sox autographed pictures. Certainly I didn’t throw them out.
When I finished I had thrown nothing but a broken pencil. When my mum got home, she asked why I did not clean the drawers out. I simply said, “I did.”

Text I
wooden hats and mittens
The children put on boots, coats, wooden hats and mittens when they went outside. They spent two hours playing snowballs and making a snowman. When they came home they had to change all their clothes. They took everything off and put on dry clothes.
- What season was it?
- Why did they have to change all their clothes when they came home?
Часть 2
Several elements of the story may occur (take place) more than once. Especially, in tales. When the goals change, new elements are made, and new difficulties appear. In most stories, each event consists of three parts: an attempt, a problem, a result.
Text II
What’s the trouble with Monty?
Monty was a little black hound with long ears and a long tail. He liked to sniff almost everything. One day Monty got extremely interested in a new and different smell that came from a big bucket. He did not know it, but he was smelling some bright blue paint. Now Monty got so excited, he jumped right in. When he came out, he was blue as the October sky.
bucket of blue paint
Monty was happy with his new bright blue colour and smell. Suddenly he saw a group of people running to him. They thought that Monty was a rare animal: the hairy blue hound. Monty didn’t like it. To escape, he ran into the alley in the opposite direction from his home.
Before he knew it, hundreds of people were at his heels because they wanted to take Monty to a zoo.
The alley ended! Monty’s heart pounded. He didn’t know what to do. He jumped into an old bucket that he saw in the alley because he thought it was a good place to hide. To his surprise it was full of water. When he jumped out Monty was his usual colour again. People didn’t find the blue dog and went home. As for Monty, he also went home. And he decided that it was nice to smell like a dog and to look and feel like a dog too.
