Lazy Jack
Characters
Jack — a lazy young man.
His Mother.
The Story-teller.
A Rich Man.
His Daughter — she is beautiful, but cannot speak.
Scene I
Place: A poorly furnished room in Jack's Mother's house. A table and three chairs are on the left. The fireplace and one chair are on the right. The Mother is sitting on this chair. She is spinning and humming a song. Jack is sitting by the fire and doing nothing. It is Monday.
- Mother (stands): I'm so tired. I can't work all day and half the night. Jack! Why don't you go to work and help me? You do nothing but lie in the sun in summer and sit by the fire in winter.
(Jack is silent.)
- Mother (angrily): If you don't begin to work for your food, I'll turn you out of the house!
- Jack (stands): All right, Mother. I'll go to one of the neighbouring farmers tomorrow and ask him to give me some work.
(He leaves.)
Curtain.
(It is Tuesday. The Mother appears in front of the curtain. Jack comes in.)
- Mother: Well, Jack, did you get any work?
- Jack: Yes, I did. And the farmer gave me a penny.
- Mother (in surprise): Oh! Well, where is your penny?
- Jack (sadly): I've lost it.
- Mother: You silly boy! How did you do that? Why didn't you put it in your pocket?
- Jack: I'll do so another time.
(They go off. The Story-teller appears.)
- Story-teller: On Wednesday Lazy Jack went out again and worked for a cowman, who gave him a jar of milk for his day's work. Jack took the jar of milk and put it into the large pocket of his jacket. But the milk was all spilt long before he got home. Look, he is coming home now.
(Jack appears from the left, his Mother — from the right.)
- Mother: What did you get for your work today, Jack?
- Jack (goes up to her. He looks upset): The cowman gave me a jar of milk.
- Mother (angrily): And where is the milk?
- Jack: Don't be angry, Mother, I put the jar into the large pocket of my jacket and the milk was all spilt.
- Mother: Oh! Why didn't you carry the jar very carefully in your hands? You silly boy!
- Jack: I'll do so another time, Mother.
(Jack and his Mother go off.)
- Story-teller: On Thursday Lazy Jack went out and worked again. But all he got for his work was a large cat. He carried the cat in his hands, but in a short time the cat scratched him so much that he let it go. Look at his face and hands.
(Jack comes from the left with red scratches on his face and hands. His Mother comes from the right and goes up to him.)
- Mother: What's the matter? What has happened to you?
- Jack (looks upset): I got a cat for my work. I carried it very carefully in my hands, but the cat scratched me so much that I let it go and it ran away.
- Mother: You foolish boy. Why didn't you tie a string to it, and drag it along after you?
- Jack: I'll do so another time.
(They go off. The Story-teller appears.)
- Story-teller: On Friday Lazy Jack went out again to work and got a large piece of meat for his work. He tied a string to it, and dragged it along after him. By the time he got home the meat was dirty and quite spoilt.
- This time his Mother said: "You foolish boy! Why didn't you carry it on your shoulder?"
Story-teller: Next Monday Lazy Jack went out again and worked the whole day. This time he got a donkey for his work and put it on his shoulder. Look, he is coming here.
(Jack appears with a donkey on his shoulder. And walks slowly across the stage.)
- Story-teller: On his way home Jack passes the house of a rich man. This man has an only daughter. She is very beautiful but she cannot speak. She has never laughed in her life, and the doctors have said she will never speak till somebody makes her laugh.
Curtain.
Scene II
(The Rich Man and His Daughter are looking out of the window of their house. Jack appears with the donkey on his shoulder.)
- Rich Man (begins to laugh): Look at that young man. He's trying to carry a donkey on his shoulder. Ha-ha-ha-ha! (The Daughter bursts out laughing.) Ha-ha-ha-ha!
- Rich Man (in delight): Oh, she's laughing! She's laughing! She'll begin to speak now, I hope. Thank you very much, young man.
- Jack (points at the girl): What is she laughing at?
- Daughter: Ha! ha! ha! ha! How funny he is, with that donkey on his shoulder. I'll never stop laughing!
- Rich Man (to Jack): You have made her laugh, and now she can speak. You may marry her if you like.
- Jack: I'm willing. I'll marry your daughter. She's beautiful.
(Jack puts down the donkey and he and the Rich Man's Daughter join hands. The Story-teller appears.)

Here’s a special present
With lots of love for you.
And since you’re very special
Here are hugs and kisses, too!
Dear Friends! Ladies and Gentlemen, Children and Grown-ups!
Welcome to our English party, dedicated to St. Valentine’s Day, which is always held on the 14th of February and brings us happiness and good luck. I hope you are fine today.
- Masha, can you say who St. Valentine was?
Саша И.: You are right, Маша! St. Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular holidays in Europe and America.
No, I don’t know. And what are you waiting for?
- Let’s meet their with loud applause!!!
- The rose is red, the violet blue,
Lilies are fair and so are you!
- Just a little note to say:
“Have a happy, happy Valentine’s Day! (Коля)
3. If you will be my Valentine,
My charming little dear,
The sun can never help but shine
Throughout the coming year!
4. You’re just the nicest kind of girl
So very grown up, too.
No wonder that this Valentine
Brings lots of love for you!
________________________________________________________________
Ladies and gentlemen, we continue our Valentine’s party. This happy day celebrates friendship, love and romance. It’s time to tell all those special people in your life how much you love them. Those special people are your Mum and Dad, your grandparents, sisters and brothers, friends and teachers. Valentine’s Day is a good time to tell them how you feel.
- We wish you Love and be happy every time! Becаuse Love is a big feeling in our life. Do you agree with me, Venya?
Let those who are in favour with their stars
Of public honour and proud titles boast,
Whilst I, whom fortune of such triumph bars,
Unlooked for joy in that I honour most.
So, «The Princess and The Frog»! We invite the 4 Form now.

Thanks a lot, dear friends! Love is really magic!
People not only from Great Britain and the USA celebrate St Valentine's Day. Nowdays people from Russia celebrate this holiday too.
Whatever the origin Valentine’s day is celebrated in many parts of the world today and is holiday for all people.
It’s true! I agree with you, Vitya. Love is the best feeling in the world. I know that some pupils in our school feel Love too! And they want to say about that!
Nice, Vitya! I believe, everybody wants to know this heroes! Let’s invite them.
Boys are silly.
Girls are smart.
I love you
With all my heart.
Boys are noisy.
Girls are, too.
You like me,
And I like you.
Mama loves coffee.
Papa loves tea.
I love my teacher,
And my teacher loves me!
I dream about you.
Every night.
Be my Valentine
Aid hold me tight…

Very sincerely! Very good boys! Thank you very much!
Yes, of course! And I know that even some animals get married on this day.
Really! I can’t believe in it.
Now We invite the 3d Form with their performance “The Mice Wedding” to prove it.

We continue our program. Vika, I have a question for you.
Do you like dancing?
Oh, yes, of course! I like dancing very much. And why are you asking?
Because the students from the 4th Form would like to dance. They are good at dancing.
Thank you Vanya and Alina for your dancing!
No, I don’t believe you! You are increasing now.
Yes! You are Vika.
Love to your mother, granny, to your sister or brother, to relatives and friends.
Who said “Good night”
When I was a child?
My mother.
Who dresses my doll in clothes so gay
And showed me often how to play?
My mother.
Who ran to help me when I fell
And who could funny stories tell?
My mother.
Who sits at my head
When I am in bed?
My mother.
Who is so nice, who is so kind
Another so dear you’ll never find?
My mother.
So, Vanya, it is time to watch the story about Love to our parents and grandparents.
Ok! The pupils of the 3d Form want to show you the story «Half Blanket». Let’s invite them.
Half Blanket»)

Valentine’s Day is a special time when people tell each other that they love them and care about them. To celebrate this holiday people send special cards with romantic messages and give small gifts to their sweethearts. So, todays gifts are the best gift’s in the world!
I love English so much! It’s great that English helps us speak about love today!
Love is not an exam to pass or fail, Love is not a competition to win or loss, But love is a feeling in which you care for someone more than yourself…
- Some people just know
How to love and to give
they will sing their song
Every day that they live.
(заключительная песня «____________________________________________»)
Dear Friends! Our Valentine’s party has come to its end. Hope you have had a great and enjoyable time with your friends and filled your hearts with nice warm emotions that you will be sharing with all the people around you. Thank you for your attention! Be happy! We love you!

HALF BLANKET
Yeva: Mrs Jonas was very old when her husband died. For many years she worked hard for her family, and she spent all her money for her son´s education. One day, she was feeling sad and lonely, and she thought.
Varya: I want to see my son, but I know that he is very busy right now. I hope he comes tomorrow.
Yeva: But her son never came to see her, so she decided to visit him.
Oleg: Mum, what a nice surprise!.
Varya: You know that I don´t like to bother you, but I feel lonely… I am tired and old.
Oleg: My wife and I are happy that you’ve come to see us. You know that my home, is your home. You are always welcome here!.
Varya: Thank you, son, I knew I could count on you. Can I stay here with you?. I feel so lonely.
Oleg: Do you mean… that you want to stay here with us… I mean, to live here?…. sure… but I don´t think you are going to like being here. You know that my house is very small… my wife is so special…. And then… the kids…
Varya: Look son, if I bother you, then forget it. Don´t worry about me, someone else might help me.
Oleg: No mother, it is not that… it´s just that I don´t know where can you sleep. Everybody here has their own room, my kids won´t forgive me if they have to get out of their room… would you mind sleeping in the garden?.
Varya: In the garden?. That´s fine with me.
Yeva: Mr. Jonas has got a daughter Mary. She is 12 years old.
Oleg: Mary, please, come here quickly!.
Renata: Did you call me, father?.
Oleg: Look daughter, your grandmother is staying to live here with us. Bring her a blanket.
Renata: Yes father, but… where is she going to sleep?.
Oleg: She will sleep on the bench in the garden, she doesn´t want to bother us.
Renata: Mmm, well… if you say so … I`ll bring the blanket.
Oleg: Don`t take too long, your grandmother is tired, and she needs to rest.
Renata: Sure, dad.
Yeva: Mary went upstairs to bring a blanket. She took a pair of scissors and cut the blanket in half. Then her father came into the room.
Oleg: What are you doing, Mary?. Why are you cutting the blanket in half?.
Renata: Well, I was thinking…
Oleg: What were you thinking about?.
Renata: That I am going to put away the other half.
Oleg: What for?.
Renata: So that you can use it when you are old, and you come to live to my house … just like my grandmother.
Oleg: Oh, you have just taught me a lesson!. Oh Mary, what was I thinking?.
Yeva: At that moment, Mrs. Jonas´s Son thought about what he was doing to his mother. He arranged a room for her, and she lived happily with her son´s family for many years until she died.
THE END
THE MICE WEDDING
I heard that Mr. and Mrs. Mouse´s daughter is very beautiful.

Yes, it is!.

(They leave. Mr. and Mrs. Mouse enter)

That´s right. One mouse has a large tail; another one doesn´t have teeth; then, there’s one that is too fat. We can´t let her marry any of them. They are so ugly!.
She must marry the most powerful in the world.
The most powerful is the Sun!.
(The Sun enters)
Ева Ф.: (in a sweet voice) Mr. Sun!. We have a beautiful daughter. She is the prettiest girl in the world, and you are the most powerful. You deserve her!.
Вера: AND Ева Ф.: We want you to marry her!.
I´m not the most powerful. The most powerful is the Cloud.
Вера: AND Ева Ф.: The Cloud?.
Yes. The Cloud covers me.
(The Cloud enters and covers the sun. The Sun disappears)
Hey, Cloud!. We have seen you cry a lot of times. Do you cry because you feel alone?.
No. I cry so that plants can grow.
You are the most powerful, and you deserve to marry our daughter.
She is the most beautiful mouse on earth!
No, I´m not the most powerful. The most powerful is the wind.
Вера: AND Ева Ф.: The Wind?.
Yes. The wind blows me . (wind blows and whistles) Listen!. here it comes!. Oh, it´s pushing me!.
(The Wind enters. The Cloud disappears. The Wind walks around the stage and the mice walk behind it)
Вера: AND Ева Ф.: Mr. Wind!. Mr. Wind!. Stop!.
(The Wind stops blowing)
What do you want? I´m in a hurry!.
Would you like to marry our daughter?. She is the most beautiful mouse in the world!.
You are the most powerful. You deserve her!.
I am not the most powerful. The most powerful is the wall.
Вера: AND Ева Ф.: The wall?.
Yes.The wall stops me. The wall doesn´t let me go through.
(The Wind leaves whistling trying to destroy the wall. Mr. and Mrs. Mouse fall down because of the wind force)
Вера: (getting up) We have to talk to the wall.
Yes, we have to!. (they approach the Wall) Mr. Wall! Mr. Wall!.
He doesn´t hear you. He is old and deaf.
Вера: AND Ева Ф.: Mr. Wall!. Mr. wall!.
What do you want?.
Вера: (yelling) Would you like to marry the most beautiful girl in the world?.
That I´m wrong?. I´m too old.
No, no!. Would like to marry our daughter?.
Who, me?. Why?.
Because you are the most powerful.
Me, the most powerful?. Ha, ha, ha, ha! I´m full of holes. The most powerful is the mouse who made them.
Вера: AND Ева Ф.: The Mouse?.
(Mr. and Mr. Mouse look at each other and seem ashamed. The Young Boy Mouse enters from behind the wall)
You are the parents of the most beautiful girl in the world. I want to marry her. We have been in love for a very long time.
Oh, but where are you going to live?.
In this old wall. I have been building a house with many rooms. It has a living room, a dinning room, and a kitchen. It is very comfortable!.
Yes!. Yes!. You will marry our daughter because you are the most powerful in the world.
More powerful than the sun, the cloud, the wind, and the wall.
(The Girl Mouse enters and hugs and kisses the young boy mouse. The Gossipy Girl 1 and 2 enter)
We wish you the best!.
(They hug the happy couple. They sing and dance)

ACT 1 – IN THE FOREST
(The Princess enters, singing and playing with a golden ball)
PRINCESS: What a lovely day!. I’m so happy with the golden ball my father gave me. It´s so beautiful. I´ll treasure it forever (sees well and stops suddenly). My, I´ve never seen this well before. I wonder where it came from?. (looks down inside the well). It certainly is deep. It must go down for miles. (drops ball into well) Oh, no!. I´ve lost my ball in the well. What shall I do?. (begins to cry).
FROG: (sticks head up from behind well) Princess , why are you crying?.
PRINCESS: What an ugly frog!. Stay away from me!. I dropped my golden ball into the well. If I could get it back, I´d give everything I own — my clothes, my pearl necklace , my diamond bracelet , and even the golden crown which I am wearing!.
FROG: I can get your ball. But what would I do with all your fine things?.
PRINCESS: (angry) How should I know?.
FROG: I know you’re sad, so I´ll get your golden ball.
PRINCESS: Really?. You would do that for me?.
FROG: Yes, but only if you promise you will let me live at the castle.
PRINCESS: What!.
FROG: And let me be your companion and play-fellow.
PRINCESS: Oh my!.
FROG: And let me eat from your golden plate.
PRINCESS: Eat from my golden plate!.
FROG: And let me sleep on your pillow.
PRINCESS: Oh yes, I promise you all you wish, if you will bring me my ball back again. (to the audience) How the silly frog does talk. All he does is to sit in the water with the other frogs, and croak. He can be no companion to any human being.
FROG: You will have your golden ball (disappears behind the well).
PRINCESS: (looking down inside well) My goodness. It´s so dark down there. Where is that frog? I can´t see him. I´ll bet he´s stolen my golden ball. (she jumps back as the frog appears with the ball). You found it!. You found it!. (she grabs the ball and runs off stage).
FROG: Wait!. Wait!. You promised to take me back to the castle with you. Princess!. (he shakes his head, and jumps back behind the well).
ACT 2 – IN THE CASTLE DINING HALL
(The Princess and King are eating dinner)
KING: My dear daughter, ever since I gave you that golden ball you have been in a hurry to finish your dinner.
PRINCESS: I can hardly wait to hold it again, Father. It´s my favorite toy. (There is a knock at the door). I wonder who that can be?.
FROG: (from off stage) Princess, oh, Princess, open the door!. I am your true love forevemore!.
PRINCESS: (opens and closes the door quickly) Oh no, it´s the frog!.
KING: (touches the princess´s forehead) My dear, you´re pale. What´s the matter?.
PRINCESS: (crying) There´s a disgusting frog at the door. Yesterday, as I was in the forest sitting by the well, playing, my golden ball fell into the well. And because I cried so, the frog brought it out again for me, and because he insisted so much, I promised him he should be my companion, but I never thought he would be able to come out of his water. And now he is outside there, and wants to come in to me.
FROG: (knocks at the door) Princess, oh, Princess, open the door!. Don’t you remember what you told me yesterday by the cool waters of the well?.
PRINCESS: Oh, father, what should I do?.
KING: You gave your word and you must keep it. Let the frog in.
PRINCESS: Very well, father. (open the door) Come in, frog.
FROG: Thank you, Princess. I`m hungry. Let me eat from your plate. (he hops to the table and begins to eat). This is delicious. I have eaten and am satisfied, and very tired (yawns).Let me sleep on your pillow.
PRINCESS: Do I have to, father?.
KING: Yes, he helped you when you were in trouble. And besides, you gave him your word.
PRINCESS: Oh, all right. Come on, frog. I´ll carry you upstairs. (As she walks toward the frog, the curtain falls)
ACT 3 – IN THE CASTLE DINING HALL.
(The Princess and the King are eating dinner)
KING: Daughter, you´re not eating.
PRINCESS: I´m not hungry, Father.
KING: Eat my child!. You´ve said that for three nights in a row.
PRINCESS: And for three nights that dreadful frog has come back. Every night it´s the same thing (imitates the forg´s voice): Princess, oh Princess, open the door!.
KING: You gave him your word.
PRINCESS: Yes, but when he comes in, he eats from my plate. and he´s so sloppy!. Then I must carry him upstairs and place him on my pillow. And he´s so wet!. UGH!. each morning, he´s gone and I´m glad.
FROG: (knocks at door) Princess, oh Princess, open the door!.
PRINCESS: Oh, no!. He´s here again!.
KING: Open the door.
PRINCESS: Father, do I have to?.
KING: You gave him your word.
PRINCESS: (opens door and sees a handsome prince) Who are you?.
PRINCE: (enters room) I am a prince. A wicked witch turned me into a frog. I had to find a beautiful princess who would let me eat from her plate and sleep on her pillow for three nights in a row. Then I could become a prince again.
PRINCESS: I don´t know what to say!.
PRINCE: Say you´ll marry me and come to live with me in my father´s kingdom.
PRINCESS: Oh, yes. I will!. (she hugs the prince).

But Grandma, what big teeth you've got!
That’s because I want to eat a lot!

- Why do you cry, my dear girl? What’s happened?

Days and nights when streets are dark.
- Hello doggy and Red Riding Hood!
- Hello, pussy-cat!
MEE-OW, MEE-OW!
My tail curls
Around my nose
When I lie down
To purr and doze.
I’m a little pussy
My coat is so warm
And if you don’t hurt me-
I’ll do you no harm.
Let's pull the turnip.

So the five of them are pulling the turnip. They are pulling and pulling and cannot pull the turnip out. Now Grandpa and Grandma and Granddaughter and Doggie and Cat call their Mouse for help:
(Вместе зовут мышку).- Mouse!
PEE-PEE
I think mice
Are rather nice,
Their tails are long,
Their faces small,
They haven’t any
Chins at all.
Their eyes are pink,
Their teeth are white,
They run about
The house at night.

I am a tasty turnip
Thank you for pulling me out!
The more we are together
Together, together
The more we are together
The happier we are
For my friend is your friend
And your friend is my friend
The more we are together
The happier we are
The more we sing together
Together, together
The more we sing together
The happier we are
For his friend is my friend
And my friend is his friend
The more we play together
The happier we are
The more we dance together
Together, together
The more we dance together
The happier we are
For our friends are their friends
And their friends are our friends
The more we dance together
The happier we are
The more we dance together
The happier we are
