Similarities and differences between Russian Father Frost and Western Santa Claus.
Short annotation.
Many children from different countries believe that the good old man with a long gray beard in a red cap and a fur coat walks around the world and gives presents to children on Christmas Eve or New Year’s. This old man’s name is different in different parts of the world, but all are looking forward to, because he brings home the magic and gifts.
I noticed a few differences between the main winter wizards when I watch movies, read books. I had got some questions. What are their similarities? What are their differences? Where did they come from? Where do they live?
I studied literature, watched a lot of Russian and foreign films and cartoons. I found the answers. These answers I have written in detail in my work.
Similarities and differences between Russian Father Frost and Western Santa Claus.
Аnnotation.
I live in the village Dinskaya. I study in the fourth grade ,in school number 1. I love the holidays, but especially Christmas and New Year. Why do I love them? Winter holidays are gifts and magic, elegant and shining Christmas tree. On Christmas and New Year Father Frost and Santa Claus come to us. They are wonderful characters. Who are these heroes, these wizards?
I see a funny old man with glasses and a short coat on the western postcards. On the Russian postcards I see great grandfather with a long beard and a beautiful red coat. Do they actually exist? They are very similar to each other and at the same time, I understand that they are different. What are the similarities and what’s the difference?
I began to ask these questions. I searched for answers in the library, on the Internet! I began a real little explorer!
The purpose of my research: to find the similarities and differences of Father Frost and Santa Claus.
Research objectives:
- To study the origin of Father Frost and Santa Claus.
- Find the differences and similarities in appearance, places of living and the time of appearance of Santa Claus and Santa Claus.
Introduction.

In different parts of the world the old man’s name is different, but all are looking forward to him, because he brings home the magic, gifts and a lot of fun.

The purpose of my research: to find the similarities and differences of Father Frost and Santa Claus.
Research objectives:
Methods:
I had a hypothesis that Santa Claus and Father Frost have not in common.
The theme of my work is relevant, because Christmas and New Year has always been and will be the most favorite holiday of people. Every year the children guess their fondest wishes and waiting for visit the wizards.
1.The origin of Father Frost.
Russian Santa Claus – a character of folk beliefs and fairy tales. In the East Slav culture, he is presented as a fairy-tale image of the Frost – a hero, a blacksmith, which binds water. Originally he was called Treskun and he was a little old man with a long beard and a stern disposition as the Russian frosts. Treskun was absolute owner on the Earth from November to March. Even the sun was afraid of him! He was married to a wicked lady –Winter.
Father Frost is portrayed as an eccentric, strict but fair spirit of winter in the Russian fairy tales. After a while , he becomes gradually a fair and kind grandfather. Later, the Snow Maiden joins to Father Frost . She is his granddaughter –Snegurochka, snow girl, the heroine of many Russian fairy tales. Nowadays, they began to bring gifts to children on New Year and perform secret desires together. Father Frost and Snow Maiden now typically make appearances at children’s parties during the winter holiday season, distributing presents and fighting off the wicked witch, Baba Yaga, who children are told wants to steal the gifts.
The address of Father Frost knows everybody in our country: Votchina of Father Frost Velikiy Ustyug Russia.
Father Frost has his residence in Veliky Ustyug. Velikiy Ustyug is the Homeland of Father Frost. In this fabulous forest on the bank of the Sukhona-river there stretches the Votchina of Father Frost, where the magician lives and meets the guests all the year round and for everyone here there’s something interesting.
2. The origin of Santa Claus.
The name of Santa Claus is connected with the name of St. Nicholas. Santa – means “saint“, and Klaus – Nicholas. Nicholas was famous for his generous gifts to the poor, in particular presenting the three impoverished daughters of a pious Christian with dowries so that they would not have to become prostitutes.
How St. Nicholas became Santa Claus, the good Father Christmas who brings gifts to children?
Clarke Moore was the first who told us about Santa in his poems. In Moore’s Santa Claus – is a funny elf with a round belly. In the poem there Christmas night, and shoes and stockings, and a huge bag of gifts. He came up and the fact that Santa has to enter the house through the chimney.
In 1885, publisher Louis Prang distributed an English tradition to send to friends and family greeting cards on Christmas Day. He has released a greeting card, where Santa Claus was portrayed in a red suit. The homeland of Santa Claus became Lapland, it is the country behind the Polar Circle.
3.Comparison of wizards.
I learned details of information about the origin of Santa Claus and Santa Claus, I came to the conclusion that these wizards have some similarities, but also they have some differences. They have more differences than similarities.
First of all, they are similar in that they are good wizards. Both of them give children the belief in magic and good strength. Father Frost and Santa Claus have a big bag with gifts .Tthey are New Year and Christmas symbols. Also, they get children’s letters, they have officials addresses, they have residences, there are annual parades of Santa Claus and Father Frost
I found a lot of differences between them.
Russian Father Frost has a thick silver hair and a long gray beard. Our Father Frost is very tall. Beard of Santa Claus cut short and curly, like a lamb. Santa Claus is not tall and rotund.
Father Frost dressed in a long fur coat. The coat can be red or blue .It is embroidered with silver swan down or white fur. Father Frost wears a long belt. On his head is red fur hat, embroidered with silver and pearls. The shape of hat is semi-oval. It has no bells and pompoms. Father Frost wears warm mittens on his hands and silver or red boots with a raised nose or felt boots on his feet.
In Santa Claus clothes too the red color is dominated , but it’s the only similarity in their clothes. Santa has got a short jacket. It can be only red. Santa Claus wears the black belt with a buckle. Santa has got a light hat with a fluffy ball.Santa Claus prefers light mittens or gloves. He wears red trousers and prefers to wear black boots.
On hands of Father Frost has the staff, it is crystal or silver, with a twisted handle, it completes the image of the month or the head of a bull (symbol of power, fertility and happiness). Santa’s staff is a standard staff: stick with a curved top. The modern Santa Claus can wear the glasses.
Father Frost appears in our homes like mysterious way, as the true spirit, and no one knows exactly how it appears – only know that he was. Father Frost travels in the sledge pulled by three horses. They run on the ground or fly but near the ground.
Santa Claus flies around the world in a sledge pulled by eight reindeer: Blitzen, Comet, Cupid, Dancer, Dashed, Donder, Prancer and Vixen. They fly in the sky. Santa Claus enters the house through the chimneys and vents, tinkling bells, heralding about the coming of Christmas. He travels through the sky on a sledge that is pulled by reindeer, that he comes into houses down the chimney at night and puts presents for the children in socks, or near the fire place. Children hang their stockings near the fireplace so that Santa Claus could put presents into them: oranges, sweets, nuts and if the child didn’t behave properly Santa Clause can put there a piece of coal as punishment.
Father Frost has a helper .“Snegyrochka” or Snow maiden is granddaughter of Father Frost. She helps to do different important things . They travel and give gifts together.
Santa Claus has helpers too. He has got elves. Elves do not travel with Santa. They only take part in the production of gifts.
Nowadays, the Snow Maiden and Father Frost favorites of all children. In the New Year the children are looking forward to the time when Santa Claus will come to their home and give them favorite gifts.
I have completed a number of problems in my research. I learn in detail about the origin of Father Frost and Santa Claus. I have identified their similarities and differences. I realized that Father Frost is very different from Santa Claus by their appearance, origin, method of travel, and most importantly, our Santa Claus have a wonderful granddaughter Snow Maiden.
I concluded that they have the most important thing in common that unites the two wizards - they are very kind to the children, inspire in them the belief in the goodness and magic.
It is no matter how the good magician named that comes to every home in the New Year's Eve or Christmas, the children are waiting for him all over the world. After all, he brings not only gifts and sweets, but also joy, hope and love.
