KIZHIСлайд 2
The pogost of Kizhi is located on one of the many islands in Lake Onega, in Karelia. Two 18th-century wooden churches, and a clock tower, also in wood and built in 1862, can be seen there. These unusual constructions are in harmony with the surrounding landscape.
Слайд 4
The pogost is famous for its beauty, despite that it is built of wood. In 1990, it was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites and in 1993 listed as a Russian Cultural Heritage site.
Слайд 6
The pogost and the buildings grouped together to form the site museum on the southern part of Kizhi are examples of the traditional wooden architecture of Karelia and more generally of that of northern Russia and the Finnish-Scandinavian region.
Слайд 8
The pogost was built on the southern part of Kizhi island, on a hill 4 meters above the Lake Onega level. Its basic structural unit is a round log about 30 cm in diameter and 3 to 5 meters long. The Kizhi Pogost was built without using a single nail. Many thousands of logs were brought for construction from the mainland.
Слайд 10
The Church of the Transfiguration ( Преображения Господня ) is the most remarkable part of the pogost. It is not heated and is called a summer church and does not hold winter services. The church with a height of 37 meters is one of the tallest wooden buildings of the Russian North.
