INTRODUCTION

It goes without saying, our planet the Earth is very beautiful. But nowadays it is in great danger because of ecological problems. Our native town Morshansk is not an exception.

By the way, do you like to fish or swim? Do you enjoy walking in the forest? Do you like to breathe fresh air, watch the birds and listen to their songs?

If you do, we will have to treat our Earth home in a different way.

But how can we do it?

In my research paper I’ll try to answer this question.

So the aim of my research is to suggest some effective ways to improve the ecological situation in Morshansk.

The tasks of my paper are the following:

to study the Internet resources and find out the typical environmental problems nowadays;
to interview the students and teachers of my school and find out the most serious ecological problems in Morshansk;
to organize “Green Patrol” in my class.

The hypothesis is:

if we act together with my classmates, we can do something to improve the ecological situation in Morshansk.

I am sure, if people want to survive they must solve ecological problems quickly. Some progress in the world has already been made. 159 countries – members of the United Nations Organization - have set up environmental protection agencies. They hold conferences discussing ecological problems and take practical urgent measures to avoid environmental catastrophe. That is why my research paper seems to be especially actual.

1. ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS OF THE WORLD

I studied the Internet resources and found out the most serious environmental problems nowadays. They are:

pollution in its many forms (water pollution, air pollution, nuclear pollution);
destruction of wildlife and the beauty of the countryside;
shortage of natural resources (metals, different kinds of fuel);
noise from cars, buses, planes, etc;
the growth of population.

In my opinion, the most important problems are water and air pollution.

Many seas are used for dumping industrial and nuclear waste. This poisons and kills fish and sea animals. Many rivers and lakes are poisoned too. Fish and reptiles can’t live in them. There is not enough oxygen in the water. In such places all the birds leave their habitats and many plants die. If people drink this water, they can die too.

It happens so because factories and plants produce a lot of waste and poison the water.

Most of the air pollution in big cities comes from cars and buses, factories and plants. That’s why it’s very difficult to breathe in big cities.

Nowadays there are holes in the ozone layer. That is why ultraviolet radiation can get to the earth and cause skin cancer. Many scientists think these holes are the result of air pollution.

Nuclear power stations can go wrong and cause nuclear pollution. This happened in Chernobyl in 1986.

Fresh air and clean water are necessary for our health. To make air clean again we need good filters at nuclear power stations, at factories and plants.

2. ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS IN MORHSANSK

We live in Morshansk. Our town is small but very green and beautiful. It is situated on the banks of the river Tsna. There are a lot of wonderful forests in and around Morshansk.

People of pour town like to spend time in the open air. In spring and summer they often have picnics in Kochetovskiy forest, at Pichaevo and Raksha ponds. In hot weather you can see a lot of holidaymakers on the beaches of the Tsna too.

My family is not an exception. But nowadays it’s not always pleasant to spend time in these places. There are piles of litter everywhere. You can be injured by a piece of glass. There is also a danger from stray dogs trying to find something tasty in this rubbish. The water in our river is rather dirty too.

I decided to interview the students of my school and find out what they think of the ecological situation in Morshansk (Appendix 1). 25 students took part in the interview.

The results of my interview are shown on the diagramme (Appendix 2)

After analyzing the results of my interview I came to the conclusion:

the pollution in the streets is “the number one” problem in Morshansk.

The students suggested the following ways of improving the ecological situation in Morshansk:

- not to drop litter in the streets and in the forest – 7 students;

- to clean streets, yards and forests – 8 students;

- to take a fine for dumping rubbish (1000 roubles) – 1 student;

- to put more rubbish bins and containers in the streets and yards – 3 students;

- to have more street cleaners – 1 student;

- to build recycling centers in our town – 3 students;

- to plant more trees in the streets – 1 student;

- to organize societies for helping nature – 6 students.

3. “GREEN PATROL” AND ITS ACTIVITIES

As for me, I am seriously worried about the ecological situation in my native town and I made up my mind to do something to improve it.

I decided to organize “Green Patrol” in my class. My friends Andrey and Nikita became the members of my society. We created the emblem for our organization (Appendix 4).

First of all, we printed some leaflets for the people of Morshansk (Appendix 5).

We took some photos of the dirtiest places in Morshansk. It was surprising but the territory near the bus stop opposite our school and the park before the former “Himmash” club are among them. I made a presentation and showed it to all my classmates. We decided to organize a “clean - up” day and clear these places. The results were fantastic! Old women and mothers with little children who usually have a rest in this park were very grateful to us.

Our next act was to put some rubbish bins in the square behind our school. This place is usually covered with chips, crisps packets, empty bottles, cigarette packets and so on. We created wonderful containers and solemnly put them in this square. We hope holidaymakers will always use them to drop litter!

Finally, we asked our classmates to design bright T-shirts with slogans about ecological problems. The students did their best and their T-shirts were fantastic! (Appendix 6)

CONCLUSION

In this research I studied the ecological problems in the world and in my native town Morshansk.

I organized “Green Patrol” to improve the ecological situation in my native town. Its activities were rather successful.

I came to the conclusion:

- if we act together with my classmates, we can do something to make the ecological situation in Morshansk better.

So my hypothesis has been proved.

We are responsible for our fragile planet! Our future is in our hands!

I love my town and I want it to be clean and beautiful!
