Данное исследование посвящено изучению тематической группы слов «Дни недели» в английском языке с целью выявления происхождения этих названий.

The theme of the research is the thematic group “Days of the week ” The objective is to trace back the origin of the words denoting the days of the week in the Old English language and observe their functioning in the idioms in the modern language .

The ancient Germans adapted the system introduced by the Romans but embellished it with the names of the native Gods. Anglo-Saxon gods were numerous but those who gave the origin to the days of the week were the major objects of their cult.

Sunday (Sunnandæg ) The god of the Sun was the major divinity. He was depicted as a male holding a burning ring in his hands. The god was treated with awe and respect so the first day of the week was named in his honour .

Monday (Mōnandæg ) The Lunar deity Mana was the next to be worshipped in terms of superiority. She was depicted in a short clothing with a hood with long ears. Monday is the day of the moon.

Tuesday (Tiwesdæg ) The Scandinavian divine Tuesco was worshipped as the son of the Earth. He is a reverend sage with a wand dressed in an animal’s skin. Tuesday was named after him.

Wednesday (Wōdnesdæg ) The godhead Wodan or Oden is the Scandinavian hero who performed a lot of feats described in the myths. His deeds are exaggerated to such an extent that are often considered to be far-fetched and unreal. Wednesday was named after him

Thursday (Þūnresdæg ) Thor was the eldest and most courageous son of Woden and Frigga . He was the next to be honoured most ardently after his parents. He sits on the throne with the gold crown adorned with the ring with twelve twinkling stars and with a wand in his hands. Thursday was named in his honour .

Friday (Frigedæg ) Frigga was Woden’s spouse held in great respect among northern pagan tribes. Long time ago she was also called Herta and was worshipped as the goddess of earth and corn. She was considered to be the leader of fascinating valkyries . She was depicted with a sword in her right hand and a bow in her left hand. She was the goddess of Friday.

Saturday (Sæturnesdæg ) The God of earth and corn Siter is depicted standing on the back of the perch as on the pedestal. He is holding a wheel and a bucket with flowers and fruit. He is dressed in a long clothing with a rope belt. Saturday was named after him .

Idioms There are a lot of sayings and proverbs in English with the names of the days of the week. For example: In Sunday best – to be dressed in one’s best clothes have Monday feeling — have no wish to start work on Monday Sunday’s child – a lucky person Sunday painter — an amateur painter when two Sundays come / meet together — never know as much as a hog knows about Sunday – not to know anything
