The Great Patriotic War broke out on the 22 nd of June, 1941. Hitler Germany invaded the Soviet Union without declaring war.

It was the most terrible, cruel war in the history of our country. There is no family in our country which didn’t lose somebody in this awful war. Casualties and losses Military dead : Over 6, 8 00,000 Civilian dead : Over 15,400,000 Total dead : Over 26 ,600,000

During the war the Soviet people mobilized all the forces for the struggle against the enemy. The country lived in accordance with the appeal: ‘Everything for the front, everything for the victory’.

Volgograd is one of hero-cities. The symbol of Volgograd is the Mamaev Hill. It was the centre of fighting during the heroic defence of Stalingrad. The hill changed hands several times.

The Great Patriotic War of the Soviet people against fascist Germany ended in Berlin on May 9, 1945. Every year in honour of this day in all cities across the country lots of cheerful parades and celebrations are held.

And the largest parade takes place on the Red Square in Moscow.

The President of the country puts himself the flowers to the eternal flame. Films about war are broadcasted on TV. Usually before Victory Day meetings with veterans are organized in schools.

70 years have passed since the day of the Victory in the Great Patriotic war, but its echo till now doesn`t calm down in humans` souls. We haven`t the right to forget the horror of that war. We haven`t the right to forget those soldiers, who died for our bright future.
