                                                                                                                                        Christmas comes but once a year. - Рождество бывает лишь раз в году.

  This proverb is rather a statement of a fact.  There is a similar proverb in Russian language: "Birthday is once a year." Someone suggests that this is not a proverb but an idiom or a statement of a wise man. This proverb has a meaning that some events, such as Christmas or birthday comes only once a year and you should not miss such holidays.

Idiom.

  An optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.-

 Оптимист дожидается полночи, чтобы встретить Новый год, пессимист – чтобы убедиться, что старый год уходит.

  So it is. Optimistic people believe that the new year will bring something new, that was not in the old year. They are waiting for the New Year’s Eve  in  hope that it will be as good as the previous one.Pessimists see nothing good in the old year, they hope their sadness will go away with it but they don’t think that the new year will bring something good either.

Idiom.

 Many people look forward to the New Year for a new start of old habits. -

 Много людей дожидается Нового года для нового начала старых привычек.

 Some people do not want to change anything in the New Year.In fact, the most of them even change nothing. Everything remains the same, except the numbers on the new calendar sheets.

Idiom.

  Real Christmas is White Christmas. – Настоящее Рождество – снежное.

  No matter what the weather was like before the holiday, everyone expects that White Christmas will come. It means that the weather will be snowy at Christmas.

Proverb.

 The closer to Christmas, the better kids get. – Чем ближе к Рождеству, тем лучше детки.

  Before   the holiday, children became more obedient because they know that Santa Claus brings presents only obedient children. Teenagers believe that for their good behavior their parents will present them that what they are waiting and willing.
