Wild animals Выполнила: Суханова Ксения группа Ф 32 (1) «Новосибирский медицинский колледж»Слайд 2
There are different types of animals, all of them very important for nature. Animals refer to fauna and they are equally important for nature and people. There are two types of animals so far: domestic and wild. Domestic animals, which we often call pets are very dear to people. However, wild animals can be rather dangerous for human beings. Domestic animals can easily live next to people, whereas wild animals’ habitat is mainly in forests, jungles and oceans. At the moment, there are hundreds of animal species which are becoming extinct due to people’s anti-natural actions.

Tiger The tiger ( Panthera tigris ) is the largest cat species, reaching a total body length of up to 3.3 m (11 ft ) and weighing up to 306 kg (675 lb ). Its most recognizable feature is a pattern of dark vertical stripes on reddish-orange fur with a lighter underside. It has exceptionally stout teeth, and the canines are the longest among living felids with a crown height of as much as 74.5 mm (2.93 in) or even 90 mm (3.5 in ). In zoos, tigers have lived for 20 to 26 years, which also seems to be their longevity in the wild .

Koala Koala - one of the most famous and favorite Australian animals. Him name as a bear, though a Koala are not connected to what type of bears. In translation from language of the Australian natives "Koala" means "not drinking", as a Koala do not drink water. They eat leaves eucalyptus, the contained there liquid suffices to them. The Koala weighs from four up to fifteen kgs and reaches eighty centimeters in length. Life expectancy - about 12 years. Till eighteen - twenty two hours per day sleep on trees, and on ground is lowered only for transition to a new tree. Sleep a Koala in of trees. Surprisingly that the Koala is able well to float and to jump on trees, though he is usual moves very slowly.

Asian elephant The Asian or Asiatic elephant ( Elephas maximus ) is the only living species of the genus Elephas and is distributed in Southeast Asia from India in the west to Borneo in the east. Asian elephants are the largest living land animals in Asia. On average, the shoulder height of males rarely exceeds 2.7 m (9 ft ) and that of the females, 2.4 m (8 ft ). Average height of females is 2.24 m (7.3 ft ), and average weight 2.72 t (3.00 short tons) rarely exceeding 4.16 t (4.59 short tons). Large bulls weigh up to 5.4 t (6.0 short tons) and are 3.2 m (10 ft ) at the shoulder. Length of body and head including trunk is 5.5–6.5 m (18–21 ft ) with the tail being 1.2–1.5 m (3.9–4.9 ft ) long .

Yak Yak, pronounced yak, is a wild ox of Asia. It inhabits the cold, dry plateaus of Tibet, often more than 16,000 feet (4,870 meters) above sea level. The wild yak stands over 6 feet (1.8 meters) high at the shoulders. But it carries its head low with the nose almost touching the ground. It may weigh from 1,100 to 1,200 pounds (499 to 544 kilograms). The yak is covered with black or brownish-black hair. The hair is especially long and silky on shoulders, flanks, and tail. The yak is agile in spite of its bulk and its heavy forequarters. Smaller and much more docile than the wild yak, it is useful in many ways. As a pack animal, it can carry a heavy load 20 miles (32 kilometers) a day. In Tibet, the yak carries travelers and mail. It provides rich milk.

Gray wolf The gray wolf or grey wolf ( Canis lupus) is a canid native to the wilderness and remote areas of North America, Eurasia, and North Africa. It is the largest member of its family, with males averaging 43–45 kg (95–99 lb ), and females 36–38.5 kg (79–85 lb ). It is similar in general appearance and proportions to a German shepherd, or sled dog, but has a larger head, narrower chest, longer legs, straighter tail, and bigger paws. Its winter fur is long and bushy, and predominantly a mottled gray in colour , although nearly pure white, red, or brown to black also occur. It feeds primarily on large ungulates, though it also eats smaller animals, livestock, carrion, and garbage .

Brown bear The brown bear ( Ursus arctos ) is a large bear distributed across much of northern Eurasia and North America . The Brown Bear is the most variably sized of extant bear species. The dimensions of brown bears fluctuate very greatly according to sex, age, individual, geographic location, and season. The normal range of physical dimensions for a brown bear is a head-and-body length of 1.4 to 2.8 m (4.6 to 9.2 ft ) and a shoulder height of 70 to 153 cm (28 to 60 in). Males are invariably larger than females, typically weighing around 30% more in most races. The tail is relatively short, ranging from 6 to 22 cm (2.4 to 8.7 in) in length . Young of the year typically weigh 2–27 kg (4.4–59.5 lb ), while yearlings typically weigh 9–37 kg (20–82 lb ).

Giant panda The giant panda has a black-and-white coat. Adults measure around 1.2 to 1.8 m (4 to 6 ft ) long, including a tail of about 13 cm (5.1 in), and 60 to 90 cm (2.0 to 3.0 ft ) tall at the shoulder. Males can weigh up to 160 kg (350 lb ). Females (generally 10–20% smaller than males ) can weigh as little as 75 kg (165 lb ), but can also weigh up to 125 kg (276 lb ). Average adult weight is 100 to 115 kg (220 to 254 lb ). The giant panda has a body shape typical of bears. It has black fur on its ears, eye patches, muzzle, legs, arms and shoulders. The rest of the animal's coat is white. Although scientists do not know why these unusual bears are black and white, speculation suggests that the bold coloring provides effective camouflage in their shade-dappled snowy and rocky habitat . The giant panda's thick, wooly coat keeps it warm in the cool forests of its habitat .

Red deer The red deer ( Cervus elaphus ) is one of the largest deer species. The red deer inhabits most of Europe, the Caucasus Mountains region, Asia Minor, Iran, parts of western Asia, and central Asia. Generally, the male (stag or hart) red deer is typically 175 to 260 cm (69 to 100 in) long and weighs 160 to 240 kg (350 to 530 lb ); the female is 160 to 210 cm (63 to 83 in) long and weighs 120 to 170 kg (260 to 370 lb ). The tail adds another 12 to 19 cm (4.7 to 7.5 in) and shoulder height is about 95 to 130 cm (37 to 51 in ). European red deer tend to be reddish-brown in their summer coats. The males of many subspecies also grow a short neck mane during the autumn. The male deer of the British Isles and Norway tend to have the thickest and most noticeable manes. Male Caspian red deer (C. e. maral ) and Spanish red deer (C. e. hispanicus ) do not carry neck manes. Male deer of all subspecies, however, tend to have stronger and thicker neck muscles than female deer, which may give them an appearance of having neck manes. Red deer hinds (females) do not have neck manes. The European red deer is adapted to a woodland environment .

Hippopotamus The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius ), or hippo, from the ancient Greek for "river horse" (ἱπποπ ότ αμος), is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal in sub-Saharan Africa, and one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae (the other is the pygmy hippopotamus). After the elephant and rhinoceros, the hippopotamus is the third-largest type of land mammal and the heaviest extant artiodactyl. Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial even-toed ungulates, their closest living relatives are cetaceans (whales, porpoises, etc.) from which they diverged about 55 million years ago. Hippos are recognizable by their barrel-shaped torsos, enormous mouths and teeth, nearly hairless bodies, stubby legs and tremendous size. They are the third-largest type of land mammal by weight (between 1½ and 3 tonnes ). The hippopotamus is one of the largest quadrupeds and, despite its stocky shape and short legs, it can easily outrun a human. Hippos have been clocked at 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances. The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive creatures in the world and, as such, ranks among the most dangerous animals in Africa.

Red kangaroo The red kangaroo ( Macropus rufus ) is the largest of all kangaroos, the largest mammal native to Australia, and the largest extant marsupial. It is found across mainland Australia, avoiding only the more fertile areas in the south, the east coast, and the northern rainforests. This species is a very large kangaroo with long, pointed ears and a squared-off muzzle. Males have short, red-brown fur, fading to pale buff below and on the limbs. Females are smaller than males and are blue-grey with a brown tinge, pale grey below, although arid zone females are coloured more like males. It has two forelimbs with small claws, two muscular hind-limbs, which are used for jumping, and a strong tail which is often used to create a tripod when standing upright.

Giraffe The giraffe ( Giraffa camelopardalis ) is an African even-toed ungulate mammal, the tallest living terrestrial animal and the largest ruminant. Its species name refers to its camel-like appearance and the patches of color on its fur. Its chief distinguishing characteristics are its extremely long neck and legs, its horn-like ossicones , and its distinctive coat patterns. It stands 5–6 m (16–20 ft ) tall and has an average weight of 1,600 kg (3,500 lb ) for males and 830 kg (1,830 lb ) for females. The coat has dark blotches or patches (which can be orange, chestnut, brown, or nearly black in color) separated by light hair (usually white or cream in color). Male giraffes become darker as they age . The coat pattern serves as camouflage, allowing it to blend in the light and shade patterns of savanna woodlands . The skin underneath the dark areas may serve as windows for thermoregulation, being sites for complex blood vessel systems and large sweat glands. Each individual giraffe has a unique coat pattern. The skin of a giraffe is mostly gray . It is also thick and allows it to run through thorn bush without being punctured. The fur may serve as a chemical defence , as its parasite repellents give the animal a characteristic scent. Because the males have a stronger odor than the females, the odor may also have sexual function . Along the animal's neck is a mane made of short, erect hairs . The one-meter (3.3-ft) tail ends in a long, dark tuft of hair and is used as a defense against insects .
