Task 1

You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

Nowadays solar energy is widely used as an alternative form of power. Solar panels transform the energy from the sun into electricity. The first plane that does not need fuel was constructed in France, in 2015. It uses only the sun's energy. The panels are placed on the huge wings of the plane. It doesn’t fly very fast. Solar energy can make the plane move at only 140 miles an hour. However, the plane is able to travel round the world. It is safe and can successfully cross areas of bad weather. In the future, engineers hope to construct a model that people can fly in. Our dream of environmentally friendly transport may come true very soon. Would you like to take a flight on the solar plane?

We are always told that we should clean our teeth regularly to keep them healthy and to have fresh breath. It is believed that people started using a kind of paste to clean their teeth around 5000 years ago. However, the ingredients of these tooth powders were very different from ours. For example, the people of ancient Egypt used salt, mint, dried flowers and pepper to create tooth powder. Later, in the 18th century, in some countries in Europe, people brushed their teeth with burnt bread. The first toothpaste appeared in 1890, in Great Britain. At first it was sold in jars. Then special tubes were designed to make the toothpaste more comfortable to use.

Do you know why it is hot in the summer and cold in the winter? Most people believe that it is because the Earth is closer to the Sun in the summer and farther from it in the winter. But it is not like this at all! In fact, the distance between the Earth and the Sun is largest in July and smallest in January! Scientists suggest that the reason for different summer and winter temperatures is the angle of the Sun’s rays. In the summer, the rays reach the Earth almost at a right angle. Due to this, the rays are not spread out and a smaller area of the planet's surface gets the energy. In the winter, the angle changes and the Sun’s rays are spread out over a larger area. Besides this, the long nights and short days do not give enough time for the land to warm up.

A robot is a machine that does work for people. The word ‘robot’ appeared in the 1920s and it was first used in a science fiction story. In real life, the robot was invented later, in 1954. There are different kinds of robots which are used in different industries. Most of them are operated with the help of a computer program. Instead of humans, robots do hard and boring work in unpleasant or dangerous environments. They usually work faster and more accurately than people. They never get tired and do not make mistakes. Nowadays robots are often used for domestic needs – to clean houses or to look after sick and elderly people. Scientists say that soon robots will become a normal part of our life, like mobiles and computers today.

Nowadays people can’t imagine their kitchen without a refrigerator. The first refrigerators appeared at the end of the 18th century. They looked different: they were just iceboxes. The refrigerators of the past were just wooden boxes, sometimes lined inside with metal. People put ice into the box and then placed the food inside to keep it cool. The refrigerator, similar to the one that we have now, was produced byGeneral Electric in 1911, in France. It was very expensive. In those days, with the same money you could buy two cars. Today, in developed countries almost every family has enough money to buy a refrigerator for their kitchen. It’s hard to imagine how difficult and uncomfortable our lives would be without a refrigerator.

Without the energy from the Sun, the Earth would have no life at all. Nowadays everyone knows that the Sun is a star. Like all stars, the Sun is a great burning ball of gases. To us, it seems large and red. The other stars look white or light blue because they are much farther from us than the Sun. In the past, many people believed that the Earth was the centre of the universe. They thought that the Sun and the stars went round it. Only in 1543, a great Polish scientist published a book in which he tried to prove a different point of view. According to him, the Earth and the other planets moved round the Sun. Those people who supported the scientist were often imprisoned and even killed.

The carrot is a root vegetable which consists mostly of water and sugar. The carrots that we eat today originated from the wild ones which grew in Europe and Asia. The vegetable tasted sweet and the people began to use it as food.

There are two main types of carrots. There are eastern carrots that have dark purple roots and western carrots with orange roots. In fact, orange carrots first appeared in Europe in 1721. Dutch farmers selected orange carrots because orange is the colour of the Dutch Royal Family. Now orange carrots are widely grown all over the world. In modern households carrots are cooked and eaten in different ways. The vegetable is boiled, fried, baked and eaten raw. People also make juice from it.

Since 2007 high-speed trains have become a common type of transport in Europe. They make it possible to cut travel times by hours. The trains travel at 350 kilometres an hour, and this is not the limit! The only problem for the engineers is the loud noise the trains produce. People living in the areas the trains travel through suffer from the noise greatly. For the passengers, the situation is different. For their comfort, all the carriages are made sound-proof from the inside. Travelling on high-speed trains is comfortable and pleasant. In the future, a high-speed railroad network could cover most of Europe. For example, a trip from Paris to Rome could take only 3 hours!

Venus is one of the hottest planets in the Solar system. The temperature on its surface is 482 degrees. This unfriendly place looks much the same as the Earth 4 billion years ago. Both planets were formed from the same gas cloud but Venus lost most of its water and atmosphere. This happened because the planet turns very slowly. As a result, now it has no magnetic field to protect it from the Sun's winds. The planet has turned into a lifeless desert. Most space modules that were sent to Venus, could not work on the planet more than two hours. The acidic clouds and high pressure quickly made them absolutely useless.

Studies of the atmosphere first received technical support in 1912. Equipment to measure temperature and pressure was invented in Germany. But the question was how to raise it high into the air. In 1921, Russian engineers suggested using planes. The special equipment was put on planes that made regular flights. Thanks to this, scientists got a lot of new information about the structure of the atmosphere. Nowadays scientists use modern flying laboratories to study the structure of clouds at different levels. Unlike the first planes, these laboratories can work in any weather and are able to predict climate changes.

Wombats are exotic animals that only live in Australia. They have become an unofficial symbol of the country. In 1974 a wombat appeared on an Australian stamp for the first time. Since then it has been regularly used on different Australian stamps and coins. Wombats look like little bears and prefer grass to meat. They also love eating berries, plant roots and mushrooms. Like camels, wombats drink little water because there is enough water in fresh grass. Wombats spend most of their life in holes under the ground. With their strong arms and long nails they are able to dig very long and complex tunnels. Fortunately, wombats have few enemies in the animal world. Most wombats live around 15 years.

The word ‘tsunami’ can be translated from Japanese as ‘big wave’. It describes a natural process that can be dangerous for people and their homes. Most of the huge waves appear after earthquakes. Most waves are born in the Indian and the Pacific Oceans where volcanoes are active. The mass of water rises from the bottom of the ocean and moves to the shore. It moves at the speed of a plane and can be up to 40 meters high. The wave is very powerful and dangerous. In 2004, a tsunami happened in the Indian Ocean. It was one of most terrible natural disasters in history. It hit 14 countries bordering the Indian Ocean. Thousands of people were killed or went missing.

Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales. It is located in a national park. It stands at 1085 metres above sea level, and it is often described as the busiest mountain in Great Britain. Snowdon is very popular with tourists. If you are strong and brave enough to get to the top, you can enjoy wonderful views from there. On a clear day, you can see as far as Ireland! During the summer months there is a café at the top. There, tourists can get a welcome cup of tea, or soup if the weather is cold. If you feel too tired to walk back, you can always take the train down the mountain. The mountain railway was built in 1896. It is safe, and there have never been any accidents on this route.

Most people enjoy watching the night sky. And the brightest object in the sky is the Moon. Every night the Moon rises in the East and sets in the West. It takes about 27 days to go around the Earth, and it’s an interesting fact that we always see the same side of the Moon. The Moon is the closest object to the Earth. It would take us only 13 hours to get to the Moon by rocket. If we were able to travel at the speed of light, it would take a bit less than two seconds.

There is a very thin atmosphere on the Moon. Life is not possible there. In spite of this, the Moon can be used as a base for space exploration and even for space tourism. Some space companies say that they will be able to take tourists to the Moon as soon as in 2020.

People have always wanted to discover new things and new worlds. We have built spaceships to go to other planets and are planning to visit other galaxies one day. Meanwhile, we know very little about our own planet. The oceans, which cover 70 percent of the planet, are an unknown world to us. The Pacific Ocean is the largest one. The lowest point on the Earth is also there. It is called Challenger Deep and it was discovered in 1875. The Pacific Ocean stretches from the Arctic Ocean to the coast of Antarctica, but most of its water is in the warm tropics, which makes it warm. A lot of fish and animals live in the Pacific Ocean. The place is still waiting for researchers to discover its secrets for us.

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest ocean of the world. It covers the northern polar region of the Earth. The Arctic region is a very cold place. The lowest recorded temperature there is minus 68 degrees. In spite of the cold, a lot of animals live on the Arctic ice. The polar bear is one of them. Now, due to global warming, the polar bear is in a serious trouble. The thing is that polar bears hunt seals and they need ice to do this. The bears wait for seals on the ice, hunt them in the water and go back to the shore. If the ice is too thin, it breaks under the bears’ heavy bodies and they may drown. The situation is getting worse and some researchers say the ocean may become ice-free as soon as 2050.

In 1642 a French student invented the first mechanical calculator. He was only 18 and the counting machine was a present for his father. The father worked as a tax collector and the young man wanted to make his job easier.

The talented inventor made several machines but nobody was interested. The young man was ahead of his time. Many years passed before people realized how useful these machines could be and started mass producing them.

Today most mechanical calculators have been replaced with electronic models. These small devices can perform a lot of mathematical operations. You just need to enter the numbers by pressing the keys and you’ll see the final result on the screen in no time.

One day a young man who lived near the lake in a small American town asked himself, “Why can’t people ski on water if they can ski on snow?” With his brother’s help he constructed several models of skis to test his ideas. He experimented on the local lake for a few days and created skis suitable for the water. This happened in 1922. The young man, who was only 18 at that time, didn’t patent his invention. However, he performed a lot of shows across the country that made him and the sport of water skiing popular. Later, he was recognized as the creator of a new sport – water skiing.

Water skiing equipment has been greatly improved since that time, and the number of people who enjoy this sport is growing in many countries.

The ninth planet of the solar system was discovered not long ago. It happened in 1930. Scientists had been hunting for the planet for a long time. They had calculated its probable position but there was no proof that the planet really existed. It was too far away for the telescopes of that time to find it. It’s worth mentioning that the first photos of the planet were taken by a very young researcher. He was only twenty-four and had no formal education in astronomy. However he was deeply involved in the search for the ninth planet. The planet at the edge of the solar system was called Pluto, after the Roman god. The name for the planet was suggested by an 11-year-old British girl.

READING

Time: 20 minutes

Task 1

Read the text  and decide if each sentence (11-17) is correct or incorrect. If it is correct, write T (True). If it is not correct, write F (False).

The Cool School

Love the arts? Fanatical about films? Mad about music? The Brit school just outside London in the UK is a place where lots of kids fulfil their greatest dreams.

If you want fame

When people ask you what you want to be in the future, they seem pleased if you say 'a doctor' or 'financial consultant'. But if you say 'an actor' or 'a dancer' or 'a DJ' they often laugh and say 'no chance!' The Brit School takes such ambitions seriously: everything is done to make sure talented kids fully explore their passion for the creative arts.
What you study there
The Brit School centres its studies on the performing arts. Singing, dancing, acting, music, theatre, TV and film production are all on the curriculum, as well as academic subjects like maths and English. The staff stress the importance of continuing academic studies. Students enter the school when they are 14 and 16. There is a strict selection process because there is a lot of competition for each place. Entrants at 14 have an interview, and at 16 there is also an audition. The procedure is tough because the school is Britain's only non fee-paying entertainment school.
Different from ordinary school
The main thing that makes the Brit School like other schools is that it takes academic study seriously. But in other ways, the atmosphere could not be more different. The teachers are called 'guides' and speak to the kids in a more informal way than many are used to. There are no uniforms and no bell at the end of the lesson. The school also makes sure that no one lives more than an hour away from the school so they don't get too tired. This is important because having lessons in radio production, theatre and video-recording as well as regular lessons is very hard work. The terms are eight weeks long, with 2-week breaks in between and only four weeks in the summer, so it involves much more attendance than an ordinary school.
How the kids feel about it
Everyone who goes there is incredibly enthusiastic about it. Even though the school's curriculum and hours make it very demanding for them, they don't mind. Monique, 18, said she found it a bit strange at first because it was so unlike her old school. "Everyone seems so creative here so I don't stand out much. Everyone's an individual, independent and single-minded and we don't all wear the same sort of clothes." Most of the students are outgoing, and shy students say that being there makes them more confident.

11. If you are younger than 14, you are too young to go to the Brit School.

12. Everyone who wants to go to the Brit School has to have an audition.

13. Parents have to pay to send their children to the Brit School.

14. The students don't have to study maths or English.

15. The students have shorter holidays than students at ordinary schools.

16. No one has to wear a uniform.

17. Shy students at the school feel unhappy.

Task 2

Read the article and put the following headings with the correct pieces of advice (A-K).   There is one heading which you do not need to use.

A) Stop worrying about things you can't change

B) Eat sweet things

C) Communicate

D) Remember to have fun

E) Organise and prioritise

F) Try new things

G) Take charge and be active

H) Don't postpone

I) Breathe!

J) Stay positive

K)Look after yourself

Coping With Stress

Although stress can sometimes be a good thing because it gives you the motivation to do your best, it can have a harmful effect on you mentally and physically. If it continues for too long, it can cause sleeplessness, anxiety, mood swings, depression and illness. Here are 10 ways to combat excess stress.

18___________________________________

By doing this you will feel in control and decide which things are more urgent and important. Feeling prepared can get rid of a lot of stress. Much stress is caused by doing things when there isn't enough time to do them, e.g. revising everything you have learned the night before a test.

19___________________________________

Instead of worrying about doing something or avoiding it because you are scared of doing it (in case you fail) -just do it! The sooner you take action, the more time you will have if anything goes wrong.

20___________________________________

Keeping your body healthy reduces stress. Cut down on too much caffeine and sweet things. Make sure you get enough sleep and vitamin C.

21___________________________________

Deep breathing works because getting more oxygen into your body relaxes you. You can either take up yoga or simply try breathing in deeply through your nose then exhaling through your mouth, and then repeat it ten times.

22_________________________________

Doing something you really enjoy means you get a chance to take a break and 'recharge your batteries'. People who don't do this feel depressed and then their problems seem bigger and they can no longer put them into perspective.

23__________________________________

If you think negatively, stress can take over but if you keep reminding yourself that you can cope and that you know what you are doing, stress often goes away.

24__________________________________

You can't change them so why worry? Work on the things you can do something about.

25_________________________________

Find out about new things: two cliches that people often quote are 'variety is the spice of life' and 'a change is as good as a rest'. The good news is that they are both true. Realising that the world holds a lot more possibilities than the things you generally focus on can make you forget your problems.

26_________________________________

Telling people about your problems can often help. 'This way you will feel less isolated. You should also tell people such as teachers or boyfriendslgirlfriends or parents how stressed you feel about certain things. Once they realise how you feel they might be able to help, e.g. proving to parents that you are adult and mature rather than shouting it at them during an argument often helps.

27________________________________

Find somewhere where you have space to think, rest and generally chill out. You should also use this space to write down some possible solutions to the things that are stressing you. Then write down possible ways you can do those things. Attacking the problem is better than waiting for it to just go away.

Transfer your answers to the answer sheet.

Part 2 (30 minutes)

Reading

Read the passage below and answer questions 1–10.

The Green House Effect

  1. Saving the world begins at home. The energy we use to power our daily domestic lives and drive our cars produces almost half of our output of carbon dioxide, the gas which is the main contributor to the problem of global warming. The way in which we use energy is not only polluting but also incredibly wasteful. But there is nothing to stop us greatly reducing our energy consumption and creating a more comfortable world.
  2. Redesigning the home to bring our lifestyles more into balance with what the environment can cope with need not involve expensive or painful changes. Most of the technology to make the changes is already available. When the changes have been made, the home of the future will be a better place to live in. So what will it be like?
  3. We will have switched from ‘fossil fuels’ – coal, gas and oil – to sources of power which are non-polluting such as windmills or using the power of tides. Houses will be heavily insulated and heating systems made much more efficient. In addition, our future homes will use low-energy light bulbs.
  4. With water costs rising enormously, most houses will trap rainwater and store it in a large, well-insulated tank in the cellar. This tank also serves to save energy: heat is recycled from other parts of the house to maintain a high water temperature for washing and central heating.
  5. Recycling waste will be much more common than it is today. Tins, bottles, plastic, and paper will be put into vents in the wall from where they will fall into divided bins for collection. All vegetable matter will go straight on to a compost heap in the garden.
  6. The home will be a cleaner place. Air conditioning will do much more than keep you cool. It will improve air quality by filtering out contaminating dust mites and by controlling moisture and condensation.

  1. Outside the home as well, life will have become more pleasant. The car will no longer be the threat to our health that it is today: it will run on hydrogen or a mixture of battery and safer petrol. It won’t be allowed to clog up our cities: people will use the tram, a clean, fast, and quiet form of city transport which many cities are already reintroducing.

  1. This picture of the future is one which should appeal to all of us. It’s one that our grandchildren could take for granted, not believing that people lived any other way, that people went around polluting, destroying, wasting resources, and apparently not caring. But if we want our grandchildren to have a world which is cleaner and safer,we have to start to change our ways. The picture of the future can become a reality but only if we do something about it. And we should do something about it soon.

Questions 1–4.

Below you will find four headings. Each heading describes the contents of one of the paragraphs in the passage. However, since there are eight paragraphs and only four headings, four of the paragraphs will not fit any of the headings below.

You need to choose which heading best describes which paragraph. Write the letter of a paragraph next to the number of the heading 1–4 on the separate answer sheet.

  1. Homes of the future will be more hygienic.
  2. We ought to change the way we live.
  3. The way we live now damages the world.
  4. Future energy needs will be lower and not cause pollution.

Questions 5–10.

Choose option A, B, C or D which best answers the question. Circle the correct letter in boxes 5–10 on your answer sheet.

  1. The author’s intention in writing the above article was to show…
  1. the sort of future we can expect for our grandchildren.

  1. why we should reduce pollution and use energy more efficiently.
  2. why we have taken steps to reduce pollution and improve our use of energy.

  1. Which of the following statements is the author most likely to agree with? (more than one variant is possible)
  1. In the future, houses will be much healthier.

  1. In the future, people will produce much less waste.
  2. In the future, very few people will own their own car.

  1. In the future, the problem of global warming will be better understood.

  1. In the passage the author explains…

  1. why using less energy has become more popular.
  2. why sources of energy are going to become more scarce.

  1. how savings could be made in the way energy is used.
  2. how, unless we use less energy, energy costs will rise.

  1. how our cities could be made cleaner.

  1. why our use of energy needs to change.
  2. why water costs will rise in the future.

  1. fewer people will travel in the cities.
  2. cars will have far more safety features.

  1. cars will be used less than they are today.

Who invented it first?

I’m not really what you would call a patriot, but of course, I love my country. I was born as a result of pure chance on an island off the northern coast of Europe called the United Kingdom — in the southern part of it called England. So I can’t see the reason for being proud of my country. I had nothing to do with its history or achievements. I just happened to be born there. If I was born in France or America or Russia, maybe I would feel differently. I don’t know. But as with most English people I’m not really into waving flags or boasting about achievements in one field or another. W e’re happy enough to celebrate Ireland’s St Patrick’s Day on the 17th of March or even the 4th of July for the Americans but we’re not too fussed about our own national day — St George’s — on the 23rd of April.

Nevertheless, I do find it as a minimum interesting how many inventions were discovered in the UK. Over the past 50 years, according to Japanese research, more than 40 per cent of discoveries taken up on a worldwide basis originated in the United Kingdom. Many of these British inventions have had an enormous impact on the world. For example, imagine how different life would be today if Michael Faraday hadn’t built the first simple electrical generator or if James Watt hadn’t developed the steam engine?

I also find it interesting and even more amusing to see the international arguments over who invented what, especially between the UK and the USA. For example, the Americans claim the first powered flight as their invention for the Wright brothers in 1903. But the British claim that the invention belonged to a British man, Percy Pilcher, who designed and built a powered aeroplane in 1899. Unfortunately Pilcher died before being able to fly it, but he was still (the Brits say) the inventor.

The Americans, similarly, claim that Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. But Sir Joseph Swan of Newcastle announced that he had made a working light bulb on the 18th of December, 1878 and on the 18th of January, 1879 he gave a public demonstration in Sunderland — 10 months before Edison. The Americans say it was just a working model and not a commercial reality, but then they would say that, wouldn’t they?

The first telephone message was made at 5 Exeter Place, Boston, Massachusetts on the 10th of March, 1876. Alexander Graham Bell called to his assistant, “Come here, Watson, I want you.” The rest is history. But Alexander Graham Bell was born in 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He moved to Canada for health reasons when he was 23, and only then migrated to the USA. He was British, so Brits can rightly claim the telephone as a British invention.

In 1896 Guglielmo Marconi won even greater fame for sending a wireless telegraph over 94 miles. But David Edward Hughes, born in London of Welsh parents, is recorded as the first person in the world to transmit and receive radio waves in 1879. Yet another British first!

So forget the Wright Brothers, Marconi and Thomas Edison. All they had was good PR. In their own quiet, modest way the Brits were always first there. As if it had anything to do with me or as if I really care!

READING

Time: 20 minutes

Task 1

Read  the article and choose the missing sentences (A-F). There is one sentence which you do not need to use.

APE ART Works of art by apes have been displayed in art galleries around the world since the 1950’s. It’s not a joke. Apes are natural artists and ape art is becoming big business.  Ape art did not use to have any form.  In fact, paintings by chimps were nothing more than paint thrown onto a canvas, and it was impossible to tell what the pictures were meant to show. (15)_____. They can even use sign language to give their paintings titles. Koko and Michael live in California and they have been painters since they were very young. (16)______. At first she was shy, and did not want to show anyone her pictures, but now Koko’s and Michael’s art work is displayed in exhibitions and they have many fans. Unfortunately, not all of their paintings survive, as they often eat their work as soon as it is finished.

Sadly, there is bad news for these recently discovered artists. (17)______. There are only 600 gorillas and a few thousand lowland gorillas left in the world.  The work of Koko and Michael is being used to help raise money to save the world’s gorillas. Some people might laugh and say that these paintings are not art, but who really knows what art is? (18)______. Although you cannot buy Koko’s and Michael’s original paintings, many people are prepared to pay a great deal of money to buy high quality copies of the originals. (19)______. Not only will you receive a colourful picture or T-shirt, but you will also be helping to save one of the world’s most intelligent species.  Is there a better way to spend money?

A. Koko learnt to draw when she was just three years old.

B.  The truth is, there has been a great deal of commercial interest in gorilla art in all its forms. C.  They even buy T-shirts printed with their pictures.

D.  No one wants to buy gorilla paintings.

E.  Gorillas are an endangered species.

F. Today, however some gorillas, like Michael and Koko, are able to paint quite realistic pictures of the objects around them.

Task 2

Read the text and the questions below. For each question, mark the correct letter A, B, C or D.

ONE TO WATCH! Essay by Jessica Bourne, aged 14 I’m a big fan of films featuring the spy James Bond. I`ve got most of them on DVD. We’ve recently bought Quantum of Solace, in which Daniel Craig plays the part of Bond. I don`t know why the film’s got that name – but it’s a great movie, anyway.

All the actors who’ve played James Bond have been great, but Daniel Craig, who’s made lots of other films, plays the part better than any of them. Even though he doesn’t talk very much, I think he’s the most perfect actor for the role. He even does a few of the more dangerous things in the film himself, instead of getting someone else to do them. I did wonder sometimes whether he’d be clever enough to defeat the bad people – but I’m not going to tell you the ending. The actress who stars with Craig gives a fantastic performance too – I loved all the glamorous clothes she wore! The director probably had a hard job making this Bond film as full of action as earlier ones. But the excitement starts right at the beginning here, with a car chase along a mountain road, and plenty of other thrilling scenes, too – Bond leaping off tall buildings and so on. Unfortunately I found the story difficult to follow in places, and it also seemed to be over very quickly – it lasted under two hours. I also felt there weren’t as many jokes as in the old Bond films. And where was all the ridiculous Bond equipment – the underwater car or exploding watch that everyone laughed at? This is more serious, darker Bond film, but I still really enjoyed it.

20.  What is Jessica trying to do in her essay?

A explain what first attracted her to Bond films

B  tell readers about the Bond DVDs she  owns

C  give a balanced view of a Bond film she has seen

D  describe how Daniel Craig got the part of James Bond

21.  What can a reader find out from Jessica’s essay?

A whether Quantum of Solace is her favourite Bond film

B what other films Daniel Craig has made

C which other actors have played James Bond

D whether she thinks Daniel Craig is the best James Bond

22. What does Jessica tell us about Craig in the new Bond film?

A He performs some of the action scenes.

B He wears some stylish clothes.

C He is given a lot of lines to say.

D He looks strong and fit enough to fight the criminals.

23. What is one problem with the film, according to Jessica?

A It seems a bit too long.

B It’s sometimes hard to understand what’s happening.

C It has too much silly technology in it.

D It has jokes that aren’t very funny.

24. Which of these might appear in a magazine review of the new Bond film?

A It’s full of excitement, with Bond jumping across rooftops, so don’t be disappointed by the slow start.

B The director wanted to move away from the last Bond film and include a bit less action.

C I’m not sure the title tells you much …but be prepared to watch a rather different kind of Bond movie.

D Daniel Craig performed well as James Bond, but the main female star was disappointing.

Task 1

Holly:  So what have you decided about your birthday party, Max?

Max:  Not much, Holly. To be honest, I haven’t thought about it at all.

Holly: Well, it’s getting close, so you need to send out the invitations soon. By this Friday, really, to give people time to reply.

Max:  I don’t really know who to invite. My school friends, of course, and Mark, Jack and Sean.

Holly:  And Tilly and her sister.

Max:  Yes.  And Alicia. I hope she’ll be there. But I’d prefer not to have a huge number of guests.

Holly:   Twenty?

Max:   Not that many, if possible. It’s only a small flat, and I only really want my close friends there anyway.

Holly: I can understand that.

Max:  Even so, some of them won’t know each other. My friends from round here aren’t the same kind of people as the ones from school. They like different things, really.

Holly: Well, that should make the party more fun!

Max:  Maybe, but it’ll make it harder to choose music that everyone likes. I’ll have to go down to the supermarket and buy some different kinds of music, to keep everyone happy.

Holly:   If I were you, I’d make my own CD. You’ve got some great music on your computer, and you could put lots of different things on it.

Max:  That’s true. Though not everyone will want to dance, or listen to music all the time. Maybe I should put a DVD on in another room?

Holly:  Not if it’s just any old movie. That would be like watching TV at home. Max:  No, I was thinking of getting a new film that most people haven’t seen yet. Holly:   That’s a good idea! There are sure to be some who’ll want to watch it. Max:  Right.

Holly:  So the only thing left to decide, I think, is which day to have the party. Max:  It’s got to be a weekend, so not the Thursday. Saturday would be best, I think.

Holly:  I agree the weekend’s best, but the problem is that lots of people will be away on the Saturday. Perhaps you should have it on the Friday?

Max:  I don’t know.

Holly:  I don’t think Alicia can come on the Saturday.

Max:  All right, then. I’ll have it the day before.

Holly:  I thought you might.

Task 2

Teacher:

Listen everybody. I’m going to give you some important information about our trip to the capital on Friday.

Firstly, the coach is coming to pick us up from school and we leave at nine-fifteen. But don’t wait outside the main gate, even if you see the coach waiting there. Come to the classroom first because I need to take the register before we leave, to make sure everyone’s here. OK?

Lunch is provided, so don’t bring your own food. You’ll each get a sandwich, either meat, egg or cheese – you can choose – plus some chocolate and a piece of fruit. But you do need to bring a drink. So don’t forget to tell your parents that.

When we get to the capital, the coach drops us at the sports stadium where there’s a big coach park. From there we’ll walk to the Transport Museum, which is our first visit. After that, it’s on to the Natural History Museum.

In the afternoon, we’re going to the national Concert Hall, but not to see a concert or dancing because the event that’s on is actually not a musical show at all, it’s a fashion show. When it’s finished, a famous clothes designer will tell us about her work.

At the concert hall, there’s a large souvenir shop where you can buy presents for your families. Be careful though – the books and games are expensive, but the postcards are very good value. You’ll have about fifteen minutes to look around.

Now, remember the coach will go at five-thirty. So we have to leave the shop at five o’clock at the latest, to walk back to the coach park together. Tell your parents we’ll be back at school here by seven-fifteen, OK?

So I think that’s all…
