Types of B ritish houses There are many types of houses In England. A lot of people prefer living in blocks of flats in modern apartaments . But the Englishmen who are more conservative and value the traditions of their country, who loves marvelous views , fresh air and gardening live in the countryside.

If the houses are not joined to any other buildings they are called detached houses. Houses are often described by the period they were built in, for example, Georgian, Victorian, 1930’s or post-war . Cottage is a traditional country house , not big, old separate house with a lovely garden .

Two houses joined together are called semi-detached houses . Usually houses in England are built from stones or bricks which are different in colour . The most popular types of houses among British people are semi-detached and detached houses .

In most towns all over England there are streets of houses joined together in long rows . Such houses are called terraced houses .

A bungalow is a one story house with wide porches, verandahs , the word comes from hindi and means “built in Bengal style”. This style was adopted by the British for building their summer retreats during the colonial rule.

Inside a British house. The English houses often have two floors and an attic. There is a kitchen, a dining-room and a living on the ground floor. Almost in every house there is a fire-place in the living-room, which is the most favourite place for all the family in the evenings or on holidays. There are bedrooms and several bathrooms on the first floor.

8 features of a typical British home 1. There are no sockets in the bathrooms . That’s the reason why washing machines are usually installed in the kitchen. 2. In British homes most washbasin, bath and kitchen sink taps are still separate taps for hot and cold water ; although mixer taps are becoming more popular . 3. Air conditioner is a rare thing in British houses. Since the climate isn’t that warm in Great Britain, there’s no special need for air conditioners.

4. Carpets are everywhere . Most homes in Great Britain are covered with carpeting (excluding the kitchen). Even the bathrooms have it. If there is a staircase in the house, it will have some carpet on it too. This is used so that people’s feet don’t slip, which means the risk of falling off a staircase is very low. 5. Mail to British homes is delivered just like in the movies — through a special slot in the front door . T here are many different types of mailboxes in Great Britain, while a slot for letters in doors is exclusive to Great Britain.

6. Bay windows are extremely popular in Great Britain. A bay window is a window consisting of several rectangular sash windows protruding from the main part of the house. 7. Doors open inward, leading into the rooms, not outward. There are several reasons for this: safety protection, from bad weather and practicality. 8.Garages in houses aren’t used for storing cars. Traditionally, garages in Great Britain are small which is why modern cars simply don’t fit in them. As a result, many people use garages as a storage room where they keep a lot of different stuff.
