Saint- Petersburg

St. Petersburg  is my home town. The city lies on a marshy lowland where the Neva River empties into the Gulf of Finland, at about 60° north latitude. It is one of the largest industrial and cultural centers and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great and for over 200 years (from 1714 till 1917) was the capital of Russia.

The city began with the Peter and Paul Fortress. The Peter and Paul Fortress , the first church of the city ,  is worth seeing .It’s an outstanding architectural monument .

St. Petersburg is famous for its architecture .There are many fine buildings ,beautiful monuments , rich museums , parks and gardens in the city. The monument to Peter I (Bronze Horseman),St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Admiralty, the Hermitage , the Summer Gardens, the Russian museum ,Palace square with the Alexander column-all of them have a world-wide fame .

The historian center of St. Petersburg is the Admiralty. Nevsky prospect is the main street of the city. It begins at the Admiralty and ends at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. If you walk along Nevsky prospect, you will see many beautiful buildings. You will see the famous Kazan Cathedral with the monuments to the Russian generals Mikhail Kutuzov and Barklay  deTolli, the Alexandrinsky Theatre with the monument to Catherine II in front of it ,the Anichkov Palace  and the Belosselsky-Belozersky Palace , facing each other across the Fontanka River. The bridge over the Fontanka is famous for Klodt’s sculptural groups of a man taming a horse.

St. Petersburg is also famous for the its perfect embankments and bridges. The city is especially beautiful during the White Nights in summer.  Several luxurious palaces built in the 1700 s still stand in three suburbs of St. Petersburg—Pavlovsk, Petrodvorets, and Pushkin. These palaces, famed for their architectural excellence, were summer homes of the czars. Today, they are popular resorts and tourist attractions.

Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It was founded in 1703 by Peter the Great He called Saint-Petersburg the “window to on the west” . For 200 years starting 1712 Saint-Petersburg was the capital of Russian Empire.

Thousands of workmen were brought from all parts of Russia to build a new city on the swampy land at the mouth of the Neva River. They worked fast  , and dropped dead by hundreds. But the work went on.

Saint Petersburg was built according to a plan .It is  a city of architectural ensembles.. Architects were brought from Western Europe to lay out the city in harmonious squares. They are Palace Square , the Square of Arts ,Isaac’s square and others.

When the First World War began in 1914, the German-sounding name Saint Petersburg was changed to Petrograd. After the October Revolution the city was renamed after Vladimir Lenin. In 1918 on the 10th of March the government of the country moved to Moscow. Moscow became the capital of Russia again.

During the Great Patriotic War the city suffered a great deal. The German armies laid siege to it in 1941.For 900 days the city was cut off from the rest of the country. No food could be brought in and 800,000 people died of starvation. Daily shelling and air raids destroyed parts of the city. Thousands of people were killed. In 1944 on the 27th of January blockade f the city was raised  Centuries will pass but what was done by Leningraders will always remain in memory of generation to come

Now Saint Petersburg is an important industrial, cultural, and educational center. The population of the city is about 5 million

There are many famous monuments ,palaces ,churches , cathedral and museums in Saint Petersburg .They are Winter Palace, the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, St. Isaac Cathedral , the Peter and Paul Fortress .The Hermitage contains the richest collection of pictures in the world.

The main street in Saint-Petersburg is Nevsky prospect. There are many beautiful buildings in it.

Saint-Petersburg has a lot symbols .The most famous symbol of the city is the monument to Peter the Great in Decembrist’s square

The city is called the Northern Venice because there are 65 rivers and canals in it.

Saint Petersburg is also famous for its beautiful white nights.

The city attracts thousands of tourists from every corner of the world every day
