History and foundation The University was founded by the American Baptists with the financial support of John D. Rockefeller in 1890. William Rhine Harper became the first President of the University on July 1, 1891, and the first lessons began on 1 October 1892. School of business booth was founded in 1898, and the Institute of law was organized in 1902. During the Second world war, the University has made important contributions to the Manhattan project.
