There exist two types of schools in the country : state schools and private schools. Tuition in state schools is free of charge. Private schools charge rahter high fees. 80% of Australian children go to state schools, and only 20% attend fee-paying schools .

School education is obligatory for all children from 6 to 15 years. Most children being primary schools at the age of about five. Primary schools include from 1 to 6 or 7 grades. After the primary school children pass to the secondary school without examinations. Junior high schools comprise 4 or 3 year courses. After these courses students complete two years senior high school.

After senior classes of secondary schools students may enter any higher educational institution in the country.

In Australia many families live a long way from a town, so the nearest school is often very far away. For this reason, many children attend a very different kind of schools. It is called « The School of the Air » because the students have lessons over the radio.

The school provides the radio, books, videos and other resources. The children send their work to the teachers once a week. The teachers prepare the lessons and the children’s parents help them to do their work at home. Teachers and students also communicate by phone, fax and email and the teachers visits children at home at least once a year.

The uniforms at these different schools help to show the different uniform standards at different kinds of schools. Uniforms were very common in Australia, but there is no national uniform or standard. Each school chose its own uniform . Some school uniform garments were particularly common and worn at different schools. This will help highlight school wear trends and regulations over time as well as provide a way of comparing uniforms in different countries.
