Introduction
Music nowadays has a lot of different styles and ideas. Anything new people greet with laugh and pure interest.
But situation was different in the past. Society was more stable and some musical compositions seemed strange for them. Also government watched carefully to be sure nothing that can provoke riot will be published. Creative work was hard back then but it didn’t stop from creation. People kept share their thoughts with audience through music.
The theme for this work was found during a presentation for one of the school lessons. I and my friend were searching for melody for dramatic and sad pictures and found the “Songs and Dances of Death”. We were fascinated by them and decided to look for more information about composer. It occurred to be Modest Mussorgsky. Soon enough we agreed that his life, goals and dreams are worth to be told in this researching project because he is a very different from his contemporaries person.
Goals
- To show author’s desire to tell his audience the truth even if it was hard to do and could bring problems
- To find out how important for persons to know people share their opinion and agree with ideas
- To clear up what teenagers think about classic music and why other genres they like more.
Main body
How Mussorgsky found his vocation
The composer was born in 1839 in Karevo not so far from Saint Petersburg. He was raised in wealthy family and a lot of time spent outside his house. He liked the nature and peasant’s life and their songs. This interest was with Modest till his death and we see that a lot of his works were connected with Russian folklore.
At age six Mussorgsky began receiving piano lessons from his mother, herself a trained pianist. He was doing great but father decided Modest should work in military field because of family tradition. Now the boy studied the piano with Anton Gerke. His first piano piece was named "Porte-enseigne Polka" and published in 1852.
But “the true musical life” began later at age seventeen when the composer met Alexander Dargomyzhsky and then Mily Balakirev. Both of them had an especially strong impact and it’s noticeable in his works. One of the best characterizations about young Mussorgsky gave Alexander Borodin:
«His little uniform was spic, close-fitting, his feet turned outwards, his hair smoothed down and greased, his nails perfectly cut, his hands well groomed like a lord's. His manners were elegant, aristocratic: his speech likewise, delivered through somewhat clenched teeth, interspersed with French phrases, rather precious. His politeness and good manners were exceptional. The ladies made a fuss of him. He sat at the piano and, throwing up his hands coquettishly, played with extreme sweetness and grace»

In 1858 the composer was determined to demit. His friends and family couldn’t understand him. But Modest said that he’s not able to combine the work and with music and his main desire was to think only about his operas and pieces. Mussorgsky couldn’t do his best when something disturbed him.
He took his duty very serious and was spending a lot of time composing in mind. He began actually write only when everything was thought over. So he sometimes got into a strange situation when a lot of time was wasted on a work and then he decided that it was too strange or meaningless or poor with ideas and never ended it.
Main character traits
Mussorgsky loved the truth. In the works he tried to make listener to get a hidden message behind sounds. All the operas have a great historical fundament. Inspiration for them Modest found while was thinking about Russian people and their spirit.
He composed about discord in one’s heart and showed problems of misunderstanding between Royal family and the poor ones. And I want to mention Modest didn’t think such difficulties could be changed even in the future.
Mussorgsky wanted to make his audience to see how hard life really was and worked for this a lot.
His composing style was incredible. The man improvised all the life. Often he made up short moments for friends or guests but forgot those melodies few days later and none of them was published.
He could work days and days without sleep obsessed by ideas or lay in the room unable to create something for almost a year. It looks like he did the best and most powerful composes in this hard time.
Mussorgsky’s life ended in 1881 at the age of forty two.
His death had reasons:
When his mother died in 1865 he began drink too much alcohol.
His latest works were criticized by people and even by his dear friends. Modest wasn’t agreed with their words and a reaction like that was a strong hit right in the heart.
He was ill. Depression and poor living didn’t help situation at all and in March 1881 composer was placed in a hospital. Not so many days had past and he died.
He was full of plans and we will never know what else he could bring to the society.
A few words about his works
“Boris Godunov”
This opera has many final interpretations. Other compositors changed it after Mussorgsky’s death.
It’s spectacular masterpiece but it was seriously changed about three times by composer himself because each time leaders of the theatre told that something was missing or found another reason. It first performance occurred to be in 1874.

“Songs and Dances of Death”
The cycle was written in the mid-1870s. It’s including four songs about child death, death in youth, drunken misadventure and war. They are very sincere and considered Mussorgsky's masterpiece in the genre.
What we were told about him in a musical school
(personal experience only)
A lot of time we spent listening to “Boris Godunov” and “Pictures at the Exhibition”. I believe his music is specific and not everybody can like it because my feelings when I heard it first time were so mixed up. I couldn’t say I like it or not. Other teens agreed. They weren’t sure how to react, too.
But later it became obviously that we needed time to adjust. I was amazed by it even. And I also noticed the older you are the better his music for you seems.
Where we heard his name in our school
Well, there were some lessons with similar theme.
On literature lessons we were studying Pushkin once again and the teacher mentioned the opera “Boris Godunov” because it was strongly connected to writer’s work. We even listened for some areas. We were told to think deeper about compositors and their ways to write music. It was when I and my friend found themselves searching for interesting information about Mussorgsky and we decided to do some work and tell more about him to other pupils.
What can we say about teenager’s reactions on his and other classic’s music?
But times goes on and classic music`s becoming less and less interesting for young people. On the TV and radio we can hear pop or chanson or something else but instrumental melodies are harder to find. Of course, there are special channels but it’s different.
So main reason why teenagers aren’t keen on this music is because it isn’t part of our life. And nobody harry to change that.
I also asked a few friend of mine about it, most of them told that classic music is too boring or just kind of strange and they see no reason why should prefer it to their favorites music groups.
We later had a thing I named “evening with classic” where were listening to a bunch of classic melodies and “Songs and Dances of Death”. In the end they agreed that music wasn’t as bad as they expected.
But a lot of my classmates (myself included) listen to classic genre while studying or while doing homework. It’s really helping us to concentrate and clear our minds. That’s why I can’t say teenagers dislike classics they just like something else more.
Conclusion
Classic music isn’t as cool and popular among teenagers as it should be but only because it don’t accompany us in daily life and we have no desire to listen to it when there’s a lot of more relevant songs. But one way or another we enjoy some classic melodies with their relaxing deep sounds.

I don’t believe it’s bad teenagers prefer other music genres. It’s wonderful how many of them available for us and I hope every adult understands that serious ideas or problems are spoken through songs even now. Just in different way.
And the majority of people begin take pleasure in classic music when they got older. So I think all of us will find our classic musician one day anyways.
