Psychologists think that to have happy and quiet life each of us should have a hobby. Sometimes it is a work but in other cases people try to avoid some problems or just to have a rest doing different things. Hobbies are very different and their choice depends on our character and abilities.
The world’s data is: among woman the popular hobbies are: knitting, cooking, housework or care about animals and plants, fitness, travelling and self-education.
According to the information among the young at the age of 16 till 25 they are: “meeting with friends -61%, 21% doing sport, and 18 % listening to music and singing. Reading is a favourite pastime for 26%, the Internet-21 %, cinema-25%.Nowadays 16-17 years old people do sport, dancing and play computer games often then the 24-25 years old. The children lose the interests to such hobbies when they began the adults’ life. The places of interest are: 58 % of people prefer to visit departments stores, 52%- parks or squares and only 16-concerts of their favourite groups”.[1](Appendix1).
“17 % of the population in Russia has no free time. Television and dacha are the most popular leisure activities among the Russians.
Data | Leisure activity |
46% | Watch TV |
24 | The Internet |
19 | Cooking |
11 | Fishing and hunting |
Only 9% of the Russians like to listen to music. And among the young 49% think that the Internet is one of the most important part of the life”.[2] (Appendix2)
It was much unexpected for me to get to know that listening to music isn’t a popular hobby.
I thought that everybody likes music. Some people enjoy classical music, others are fond of pop music. For some of them music is a source of the thoughts and feelings. For others it’s a harmless way to relax and have fun. So many people, so many opinions. You can sometimes understand better the inner world of the person when you speak on music because it is a short way to see if your friend shares your musical values or not.

I adore music. I listen to it everywhere. I listen to it at home being free or doing my homework. But my parents don’t share my tastes and often runs me down.
I asked my classmates if they have the same problems at home. Nobody gave me an ordinary answer. That’s why it was very interesting for me what musical interests my classmates have. What music do they like? What musical instruments do they play? When do they usually listen to music? Do their parents share their musical tastes? And I organized an interview with them.
The result of my questionnaire is…
Questions | Answers of my classmates |
Do you like to listen to music? | everybody |
How often do you usually listen to it? | Almost every day |
When and where do you usually listen to music? | At school in the breaks, at home while doing homework like background |
What music do you like? | Pop and rock |
Have you ever try to play any musical instruments? | no |
Do your parents share your musical tastes? | no |
Most of my classmates are fond of music; they listen to it almost every day. But they don’t think about its genres, the famous composers and musicians and their contribution to the world of music. That’s why I decided to get some more information about the world of music.
Looking through the Internet I have learned that the most popular hobbies among people are: reading, watching TV, family Time, going to movies, computer, renting movies, walking, listening to music…
Listening to music takes only the 8th place. This information was so unexpected for me! There are so many different genres of music! And its history and variety is so interesting and unusual! Tastes differ. And the choice of your favourite tune depends only on your taste. It may be different. But we can’t live without music! We can’t ignore it.
Everyone, whether young or more elderly has a connection with music! Music evokes and entertains; connects us with memories; past and present pleasures; stimulates activity; encourages movement; motivates and promotes social interaction; and encourages exercise with fun and enjoyment.
That’s why music for the elderly is as valuable as a medium for Music Therapists, and Care professionals. Music can help them to improve the quality of life.
Some young people prefer classical music to rock and pop music because they consider that rock and pop lost their importance nowadays. Everything is controlled by machines and technology. Ten or twenty years ago there were real artists writing real songs and now all you can get is synthesizers and dance music.
But among young people there are many fans of pop music who consider that pop music is still better today than ever before.
2. Music tour around Britain.
a) National tunes of Britain.
If you ever did a musical tour of Britain, you might get some surprises.
Electric guitarists and pop singers are not the only musicians to be heard. There are many strong, local traditions of music still very much alive today.
The national instrument in the north, in Scotland is the bagpipes. Not everyone likes the sound it makes, but to the Scots, bagpipe music is the most exciting in the world. For centuries, up to the First World War, Scottish pipers led the soldiers into battle, played for their royal masters, and at weddings and funerals. The bagpipers are still very popular, and every town has a pipe band.
Music is always to be found in the village church, where the choir sings the old hymns which every schoolchild learns. Here also, in the pub, you may meet a singer of old folk songs, or a troupe of dancing Morris men.
The Welsh have always been famous for their singing. Even before the Romans came, 2,000 years ago, their “bards” were known to the ancient world. They still meet every year at the “Eisteddfod”, a Welsh competition. Now their “male voice choirs” are very popular, with their special rich, strong sound.
The largest contribution into the development of the classical music was made by
London, like all the great cities of Britain, has a long tradition of classical music.
Classical music encompasses many styles of music spanning over 700 years.
“The term classical music originates from the Latin term classicus, meaning taxpayer of the highest class. Slowly after making its way through the French, German, and English languages, one of the earliest definitions of the word meant “classical, formal, orderly, principal.” Today, one of the ways Merriam-Webster defines classical is “of, relating to, or being music in the educated European tradition that includes such forms as art song, chamber music, opera, and symphony as distinguished from folk or popular music or jazz.
Many styles of music exist within classical music; the most recognizable being the symphony, opera, choral works, chamber music, Gregorian chant, the madrigal, and the Mass”.[3]
For starters, begin with what you already know. You are probably more familiar with classical music than you think. You may hear it while dining in a restaurant, shopping, watching TV, or hear it in the movies. With what’s available on the internet, it can be very easy to find a song you've heard in almost any movie or TV show.
There are many modern classical perfomers, for example, Ludovico Einaudi, Dustin O'Halloran, Fabrizio Paterlini, Giovanni Allevi and many others.

Like in Britain music in Russia mirrors the history of the country too. The most remarkable period of the creative work of the musicians and composes was the Great Patriotic War.
Whether militaristic or melancholy, World War II-themed songs occupy an important place in Russian culture. On the May the 9th, or Victory Day, it’s an ideal time to listen to the tunes which are associated with the Soviet war effort – some of which were performed on the front line, while others were written decades later.
For several generations of Soviet citizens the song “Svyashchennaya Voina” (The Sacred War) is the symbol the Great Patriotic War. This solemn song was written just after the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941. On November 7, 1941, troops marched off Red Square to the tune of “The Sacred War” and straight to the front. There were speculations that Stalin himself ordered the song even before the German invasion, but no proof backs up the claim.
While “The Sacred War” in many ways represents the tragedy of the war and the Soviet people’s bravery in fighting the enemy, regular people most loved songs of a different kind: lyrical tunes dealing with what it was like to fight on the front line, or live as a soldier’s wife.
“Tyomnaya Noch” (Dark Night) was written in 1943 by Nikita Bogoslovsky and Vladimir Agatov for Leonid Lukov’s film “Dva Boitsa” (Two Soldiers):
Night is dark, only bullets whistle in the steppe
Only the wind buzzes in the wires, and the stars shine bleakly
In the dark night, you, my love, cannot sleep, I know that
Sitting at the child’s cradle, you furtively wipe a tear…
It was first performed by Leonid Utyosov, but Mark Bernes’s rendition is best-known. However, it’s also worth checking out a contemporary version by rapper Basta.
Bernes also popularized “Pesenka Frontovogo Shofyora” (Frontline Truck Driver’s Song), which recently got a contemporary cover from the Petersburg-based ska band Spitfire.
“Katyusha,” by Matvei Blanter and Mikhail Isakovsky, was actually written before the war, but later became popular among soldiers. The 1938 song is about a girl waiting for her boyfriend, who’s serving in the military. A Soviet multiple rocket launcher used in World War II was nicknamed “Katyusha,” almost certainly in honor of the song.
Music in this hard period of our history appeals to the hearts of the people. It made a great contribution to our victory.
Different people like different music. The scientists say that they can define your character if they know what music you like. For example, they suppose that people who listen to rock music are very clever and reasonable.
British scientists confirm that the most of young people listen to the aggressive music as metal and rock. Scientists say that these people are good students, because of their character.
I agree with this statement, because I think that music shows your soul and nature.
Music has a way of expressing that which cannot be put into words.
It is for this reason (and many more) that music is regarded as one of the triumphs of human creativity―but does music itself help one to create?
This is an important question to examine, because music has increasingly become a part of the modern-day work session.
Though it may be a fine way to avoid habituation, the question remains: does music actually make you more productive? More focused? More creative?
More modern studies would argue that it perhaps isn’t the background noise of the music itself, but rather the improved mood that your favorite music creates that is the source of this bump in productivity.
Music with a dissonant tone was found to have no impact to productivity, while music in the major mode had different results: “Subjects hearing BGM (background music) achieved greater productivity when BGM was in the major mode.”
I love music and I can say that I’m fond of a lot of music styles. It depends on my mood: sometimes I need some energetic and light disco music but I can also enjoy classical, lyrical or jazz pieces of music as well. And there is one singer I can listen to at any time. Her name is Beyonce.
She sings in R’n’B genre. I like her because of good texts, great musical sound and beautiful voice.
Beyonce Knowles is a multi-platinum, Grammy Award-winning recording artist who's acclaimed for her thrilling vocals, videos and live shows.
Born on September 4, 1981, in Houston, Texas, she first captured the public's eye as lead vocalist of the R&B group Destiny's Child. She later established a solo career with her debut album “Dangerously In Love”, becoming one of music's top-selling artists with sold-out tours and a slew of awards. The recording became a huge success for her, both commercially and critically. It was sold millions of copies and won five Grammy Awards. On the album, Beyonce worked with a number of different artists, including Missy Elliott, Sean Paul and Jay-Z.
Knowles has also starred in several films, including Dream Girls.
“She married hip-hop recording artist Jay-Z in 2008. In December 2013, she surprised audiences by releasing her fifth studio album, self-titled Beyonce.
Her second studio album, 2006's B'Day featured such hits as "Irreplaceable" and "Beautiful Liar."
In 2008 Beyonce released the new album which called «I am ... Sasha Fierce». Beyonce scored two big hits off the album—"Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" and "If I Were a Boy."
In 2011 Beyonce reached the top of the album charts with her latest solo release, which called «Four».
In 2013 Beyonce released the visual album «Beyonce», which considered the best Beyonce’s album” [6]
My favorite Beyonce’s songs are “I was here”, “Halo”, “Heaven”. (Appendix 3)
III. Conclusion. One of the most important parts of people’s life (things of being happy).
I always adored people who compose music and write poems. I think that such people are very talented. Also I believe that they can draw pictures and show their feelings by their music or poems. They can make you cry or laugh. Moreover they make you think about global problems or you may lie soft and just dream while you are listening to the music.
The result of my information project is the booklet about my favourite singer.

I guess that we can’t live without music. My motto is: “Silence is killing!” As for me, I always listen to the music, when I’m happy or when I’m sad. It helps me in my everyday life. I listen to the music everywhere: at home, in the bus, in the street.
The world of music is very rich.
I prefer music among all arts because it speaks a universal language and makes the world brighter.

“I was here”
I wanna leave my footprints on the sands of time
Know there was something that, and something that I left behind
When I leave this world, I'll leave no regrets
Leave something to remember, so they won't forget
I was here...
I lived, I loved
I was here...
I did, I've done, everything that I wanted
And it was more than I thought it would be
I will leave my mark so everyone will know
I was here...
I want to say I lived each day, until I died
I know that I had something in, somebody's life
The hearts I have touched, will be the proof that I leave
That I made a difference, and this world will see
I just want them to know
That I gave my all, did my best
Brought someone to hapiness
Left this world a little better just because...
I was here...
I lived, I loved
I was here...
I did, I've done, everything that I wanted
And it was more than I thought it would be
I will leave my mark so everyone will know
I was here...
“Heaven”
I fought for you
The hardest, it made me the strongest
So tell me your secrets
I just can't stand to see you leaving
But heaven couldn't wait for you
No heaven couldn't wait for you
Heaven couldn't wait for you
No heaven couldn't wait for you
So go on, go home
We laughed at the darkness
So scared that we lost it
We stood on the ceilings
You showed me love was all you needed
So go on, go home
