Chapter I. Introduction
Newspaper is one of the most important mass media of the modern world. The press always focuses public attention on all the most important questions of social, economic, scientific and cultural life. It is believed that if you are a regular reader of the press, you will be well informed in all questions. Thanks to the journalists and correspondents the press keeps its finger on the pulse of the country and the world.
Some newspapers in our country come out daily, besides there are some weekly newspapers too.
Daily newspapers: «Komsomolskaya Pravda», «Sport Express», «Izvestiya», «Trud».
Weekly newspapers: «Rossiyskaya Gazeta», «Kultura», «My Family», «Rescuer», «Health».
There is a local newspaper, too:"Rabochee slovo" www.rab-slovo.ru
Many newspapers have traditional columns such as "Letters to the Editor", "Contacts and Information", "Events", ”Weather forecast”. The reader’s questions, opinions and suggestions which they send in letters help to improve the newspaper and make it more interesting.
We would like to read and write articles in English to improve our knowledge of the English language.
Aim: school paper (every term)
Tasks:
Subject of investigation: job of journalists
Object of investigation: school newspaper
Chapter II. The main part. Journalism.
Journalist's work is very interesting. Like many others workers journalist must follow some rules and do some tasks:
- to give true information about different events or people;
- to communicate politely;
- to express the opinion of some groups of people;
- to form the public opinion.
2.1. Demands to the journalist’s work
A good journalist must be well-educated, know the problem well and to be objective.
He or she should follow the professional ethical norms, know Literature and Philosophy well, can write in different genres well.
If you write in English you should know the rules of paper writing, dates and numerals. You should work with the information, with text, determine the main idea, analyze the information, draw conclusion, and express your own opinion.
2.2. The main rules of paper writing.
When you name the date in English you should know who do you speak with. There is the British and the American version of it.
the British | the American |
We see July 1, we say the first of July | We see 5/12, we say May twelfth |
At first we write the date, then month | At first we name the month, then the date |
We don’t use the article the | |
Months with long names usually shorten |
They are usually written without articles and in a short way. For example,
BLAST | explosion |
BLAZE | fire |
SEEK | Look for |
QUIZ | questions |
CLASH | conflicts |
DRAMA | News from the theatre |
POLL | vote |
RIDDIE | mystery |
WED | marry |
WOO | To attract |
STORM | Angry scandals |
PROBE | investigate |
ENJOY | diplomat |
In the newspaper we should use special words, such as newspaper or paper, article, headline, the author, an issue of the paper There are a lot of synonyms to the word journalist, such as newsman, reporter, publicist, pressman….
We should use only Present Simple Tense (V or V with the ending -s if he, she, it)
2.3. Genres of journalistic.
There are a lot of genres of journalistic, such as articles, reporting, sketches, topical satire , interviews.
Article | The articles are written in the newspapers and in the magazines. They may be connected with some problems and analyses of them. The main features are easy for understanding, logic and bright. |
Reporting | In the reporting the journalist is a character of the event. He or she tells the people about this event from his or her point of view. The journalist describe the event, gives the characteristic of the participants of this event. The journalist uses the direct speech. |
Sketch. | It is the most popular genre. It is short, looks like a novel, easy for understanding. It may give some information, thank somebody, ask for something, tells about the life of the person. |
Topical satire | Has special ways of speaking. It contains critics on topical questions. |
Interview | It may be: monologue, dialogue, sketch, interview and form (questionnaire) |
We have chosen the simplest ones, such as article, reporting and interview.
Chapter III. Issue of the school paper.
We have started with:
-Name the columns: hot news(international or news abroad), news from Russia, sport news, weather forecast, school news, children page, health, ecology, recipes and study English together.;
-Find the material in the Internet, at school talking with classmates and teachers;
-Find the photos for the texts;
-chose the main colours for the paper (the main colours will be green, blue, purple);
-start to work in the Microsoft Office Word and then Publisher, Power Point.
A lot of time we have spent printing the main text of the project and the work in Microsoft Office Publisher.
Map of the project.

|
4 | Find the information |
|
5 | Release the paper |
|
Chapter IV. Conclusion.
Our paper is interesting for our classmates. We interviewed our classmates and a lot of them are afraid of large texts in English. They like the pictures, the columns (especially about the new technologies and interview) and the main topics.
We have learnt a lot about the job of a journalist, genres of journalistic, how to work on the project and with the paper. We have written a lot of texts devoted to the different topics, repeated grammar rules, discussed with our classmates pros and cons of our school paper.
We decided to issue our paper each term, try to write in different genres and go on this work next year. We think our English will be better very soon. We hope to ask our classmates to take part in paper writing, to visit the newspaper office in Chegdomyn and to create a website of our paper.
