Robert Burns – a well – known Scottish poet was born in Ayrshire in 1859. He was a son of a hard- working farmer and afterwards a farmer himself. When a boy he helped his father with the work in a farm. Burns had little schooling, because the school was very far away. For a while he had a teacher at home and learned something of the great works of literature.

Robert Burns started to compose poetry when he was 15 years old. His poems and songs became very popular among the farmers. They were merry, humorous, clever and understandable to all. His first love song was dedicated to Nell, a country girl, who helped the family in the field. “My Handsome Nell” became the most popular song in the neighborhoods: Once I loved a bonny lass and, Oh, I love her still She dresses, eye, so clean and neat Both decent and gentle, But thee is something in her gait. Makes any dress look well.

Burns published his first book of poems at Kilmarnock in 1786 and wanted to go to Jamaica to find luck, because the poverty at home was unbearable. He even couldn’t marry a girl, he was in love. But the success of his book, its popularity made Burns famous that’s why he stayed in Edinburgh and he was introduced to the best people of the city. He wrote poems and published one more book. But though he was famous he was as poor as he had been before. He moved to his native farm and worked there. His hardships, troubles and hard physical work destroyed his health, his wood, his character. Burns died when he was only 36 years old.

Thousands from all over the country followed him through the streets of his town to his last resting-place. Burns house is turned into museum which is visited by thousands of tourists every year. The Scottish National Anthem “Auld lang Syne” composed by Robert Burns has now become a parting song at any party or meeting of friends all over the world. “Auld lang Syne”: - Without trouble, without bear I lived in my younger years – like it was a dream live was soft, and thoughts were pleasing, So I floated, free and easy – drifting with the stream.

Vladimir Vysotsky
Слайд 8
V. Vysotsky was born on the 25 th of January, 1938. That is just on the same date as Robert Burns and perhaps they could be friends. As I say, Vysotsky was born before the Patriotic war. By the time he was 2 he had learnt many poems by heart and recited them with expression. In July 1941, when the boy was 3, the Germans began to bomb Moscow and the family left to Buzuluk in Orenburg Region, they lived in a village.

People often asked his mother how came that her son had knew wartime life so well. She answered that he had learnt a good deal from his father and his uncle, a war veteran and a writer. He also learnt a great deal about the war from his father’s wartime friends. When Vysotsky finished school he entered a curie engineering institute. But soon he left the institute and joined the drama studio. He worked very hard all that time. He studied at the studio while late at night. He began writing poems when he was still at school and began to sing during the first year at the drama studio.

All of Vysotsky’s songs were a continuation of his life. I never find life dull or wearying I’ve got no time for anytime or season. When I don’t have a cheerful song to sing. Vysotsky was a very industrious man. He acted in the theatre, played in films, travelled all over Russia and many countries of the world, wrote screen plays, prose and songs. He wrote mostly at night. That was his habit since his youth.

He believed that sleeping was a waste of time. His favorite phrase was “we got to work!” of course, such way of life destroyed his health. The fact was that he had heart trouble in his childhood. In the last years of his life he kept secret his heart trouble. He lived a very intense life. On the last day of his life he intended to give a concert. He did nothing by halves. But he had no strength left. The doctors were powerless to help him. Vysotsky died in 1980. “Now, 37… what a gloomy date and what a cruel Sigh – leaves me sober as a judge, that figure at 37, Pushkin went to fight a hopeless duel, And Mayakovski pulled the pistol trigger…”
